Excatly. I could add some ASM, but not alter the original coin counter. that would need new code (16-bit), new counter updating, and more. I just don't think I could do that as well as my first idea, and besides, I've already started, so it's too late anyways. That idea was that you could only get the card later, which meant mario could only access better items later on in the game, not right from the start, kinda like getting a new wallet in a zelda game, as in 99 rupee cap. -> 200 rupee cap., to allow buying a 150 rupee item.

I would go with what Hyper Hacker said. Hack the status bar coins so it shows 3 to 4 digits, and make the bank just hold extra coins.

However, make it so you can deposit and withdraw the coins, but not spend them right from the bank. And then make it so that once you reach a set amount of coins, the bank keep will tell you a secret for a price...all the coins in the bank. You set the number tho...keep it a surprise. The secret could reveal a hidden power-up, a secret level, secret world, many hints as to where to find certain things, a password for a text file you distribute with your game that has something hidden in it, it could be any number of things.

I think that it would be an awesome addition. But it's up to you. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, and remember...

But then what's the point of Mario carrying a certain amount of coins? If the items can access your bank account you'd be best to just make it display how much is in the account, and bypass Mario holding the coins altogether. Unless you can only buy items at a special place (item shop? ), in which case you can just hack it to show your account balance in that particular area, and only allow the player to spend what's in the account. (So you would have to deposit any coins you found first.)

It still seems needlessly complicated, though. I'd just make it so that you can only spend whatever money you have on you (hack it to be 3 or 4 digits) and the bank just holds extra money, or get rid of the bank entirely (turn it into an item shop/save point).

Yep, I'll just figure out some key items programming, and then I'll just place it on the status bar once you get it. Then, and only then is the account accessable. Got an idea how i'll do it too, so thanks for the idea Kyouji.

That would require a debit card, would it not?

Hint, hint.

well, since i don't know how to edit counter lenths, I figured that the pricier items would also be able to access the bank account as well as your pocket.

It rains too much in Iggy Road

I suppose you could have a bank hold coins in case of a game over, but couldn't you have Mario hold 4 digits worth of coins as well? I mean, you might as well go all out with the ASM hack, right? Then you could have some really good items cost more. Like what? I dunno. Just a suggestion.

GP, then when I finish the code, I will send it to you.

Also, nothing is final and all input is duly noted. Besides, did you notice the nasty mistake with the item box right side? And yes, the bar is ugly right now, I am in complete agreement.

That banking system actually sounds pretty nifty. I should get around to implementing some sort of banking thing for my hack or other. I implemented this crap level system. A good coin system would blow it out of the water.

I didn't mention it before, but that is one horribly ugly status bar. It would look better if you used less colors. Also you removed the time counter and added nothing in its place, simply leaving a distracting void which should probably be filled.

OK, I forgot to say that the town tileset is still beta. I can't do .png's yet, because those pictures were taken on a win98 version of paint (no built-in filters) and I haven't installed any filters or anything I could use to convert the image. The reason there are no enemies is because I defeated them all so I'd be able to mke more shots. If you really want I can take other shots as well, I suppose. Yes, that IS an item shop, although not as good as BMF's, and a banmking system with deposit/ withdrawl capabilities. Also, the reason the GFX fits in is because it is original GFX drawn over the old stuff. Mostly the Graphics edits have been token, and the bland color in the town tileset is because I was using SMRPG as an idea base and I copied the fact that all of the were the same colour.

#6 is a secret area (or it will be in the final), so it has no reason to be "super-de-duper", nor will I put too much more effort into that area until it is realy needed. At the end I am planning to have edited all, or almost all of the original graphics to how I like them.

Yeah, my paint only saves in bitmap as well. Go Windows ME.

Google Irfanview, that's a neat little program that converts to practically any graphics format, and you can do batches of pictures too. Yarooh.

To be on topic...Mushroom city is too damned brown. It's got no variety. The graphical style is fine, but it needs more color. And bland is definitely the word I'd use to describe all but the second and third screenshots, since those don't load. Needs more...uh...not boringness. Also, the ground in the first shot just looks like you just put random pixels of color in there.

EDIT: Well, the second and third picture loaded, but they seem to be the same picture. Oh boy. Yeah, the ground in those sucks. (Better than I could probably do, but that's really not saying a lot)

You should be more concerned with yourself than what others are being told. But that's besides the point, I've had a couple of chats with our friend Blisseh over here about such matters.

Using bitmaps are a waste of bandwidth for both parties, they've the potential to be the largest format picture ever. These ones, however, are not TOO painfully large (so I won't be editting them into links as I would in some cases), but still, they're much larger than they have to be. I encourage you to save everyone's time in the future, DarkFlight, and save in a smaller image format. FYI, Paint CAN save PNGs, and in fact, I use Paint for all my screenshots.

Not Paint for Windows 98.

Plus, isn't this topic getting off-topic?

Mod!? Whatever, I was just saying to stop complaining. If you would all do your job, then I wouldn't have to suggest for others not to state not to use BMP's when he said he was sorry they were BMP's in his first post! Others do it all the time, and I don't see them getting talked to. Before Kyouji became moderator, he told people what to do, how to act, this and that. No ban or being talked to for him. I could show you a computer, a 56k modem computer, but I don't have a picture of mine. Mine loads everything very fast, yet it's a piece of crap. Anyway, it doesn't matter. I don't want to fill up darkflights thread with spam.

So, darkflight, sorry for the above, and once again your game looks very nice. I was trying to find the URL for mario's house, but I wasn't able to. I can't wait to see how you did it. I'm sure it will look very cool.

I'm 56k, though, and I think we can all agree that my suffering makes up for the suffering of everyone else.

Really though I hate you, and the screens are all quite bland, the majority of the graphics would appear to be unchanged and the stuff that IS new is blander than the originals. Most of the screenshots are of the same few things over and over again, and there would appear to be only one enemy in all of the screenshots put together. Now THAT'S blandless. Well maybe there's enemies in the second iggy road screen and the mario's house screen, but you see, they're not loading for me.

Show me a more-or-less up-to-date, internet-capable PC which lags on BMP because of CPU speed.
The thing we are talking about is connection speed. Bitmap is awful for 56k or even ISDN users, and we have quite many of them, I believe.

Also, quit acting like you were a moderator of some sorts.
