I do.... Video card -> multi-input switch -> vcr -> tv. The switch converts from S-video to straight ol analog, and still comes out good too. Excellent for emulation! Bad for notepad... On the high resolution though, some colors bleed.....badly! It's really noticeable when I'm tinkering with Jade and have the NES color selection open. (Shameless plug aside...)

With the little Div-X I have, it displays nicely too on the tv. Gotta love the low-resolution stuff, great for the 'output to tv' feature. All I need now is a DVD-drive... (Yep, still have a 16x8x40 CD-RW in there)

Personally, S-video isn't that bad, it has its uses. BTW, what kind of video card are you trying to set this output to tv up with?

Why not? Aside from DVI, that's the best way to hook up a video card to a TV (few video cards and even fewer TVs [affordable ones, anyway] have DVI capability right now). There's also composite (the yellow RCA cable), but that'll only give you even worse color resolution.

Be sure not to use the remote or you'll get the BSOD.

I play DivX's through my iBook through the TV and I can attest that using the TV as a monitor is awful.

Awesome for watching DivX's though

It's not that bad on a TV. I'm using mine at the moment unitl I can buy a good monitor.

Sure, some text is unintelligable, but other then that, it's alright.

You'll quickly learn why the answer is a definite "No".

You can watch movies on a TV, but use it as a monitor? No. A monitor's dot pitch is, at WORST, 0.27-0.28. A TV's, at BEST, is probably 0.40.

It'll appear fuzzy, even on the TV's highest sharpness, and at 640x480. Even if you were to use a DVI cable on an HDTV, it still wouldn't look pretty. Stick with your laptop's screen or a larger CRT monitor.

you need to change the output mode. this can be done in the display properties--or a utility if there is a utility for your card--also, there are hotkeys on the keyboard to also do it for you...i think you have to press function+key that has a rectangle/solid rectangle (typically F10)
