Well, I use the smallest size, but it's a matter or preference.
Looks good, and I think that you do need to darken the palettes a bit. |

So anyway. Any suggestions on what to do for bg ground? |

I have nothing to complain about now, the ingame screenshot looks awsome.
Well i still think something on the tombstones would be nice. |

Hey. I play SMW hacks on the smallest setting. So lighten up the stuff on the poles.
You are right about not having the sprites such as boos and dry bones lighter than the rest. Unless you are going for a cartoony look, which it doesn't seem you are, change the palettes. |

It's a lot easier to make out when it's as big as it is in actual play (since face it, none of us play with the smallest screen out emulators can provide.)
Behold, the power of big!
And dammit, do the ghosts and dry bones here seem way too light to anyone else? They should be more like the land. IE, not terribly bright but still well enough lit.
Anyone else find it funny that I'm commenting on these things but not actually changing them? I mean, this thought just makes me laugh.
And yet I do nothing. |

Damn it. You have to find a nice medium level of shading to use here. First they were so different they screwed with the foreground, and now they are so dark they're hard to make out. You claim the Boo and Lantern ghost are too light, but I'd say they're both better than the others.
But at least you fixed the poles now. It looks like an actual fence now. Good. |

That fence looks awesome! It's much better than just the poles. The only statues that look bad are the boo and shyguy things as you said. The other ones look very good! Keep it up. |

Why get rid of the boo statues? They add balance to that BG and look good. I would recommend you don't remove them.
Kyouji doesn't know how to utilize things like HDMA.
No, but I can use it now, and if you want, Kyouji, I can implement it for you. |

The background as it will be once I finish the fence. Well, not exactly - There's still the matter of a slight bit of shading on the spikes not present here. I'll probably be getting rid of the boo and ghost guy statues, too, what with they're too light and making them darker kinda ruins them. And yeah, I know the ground sucks. I DO intend to replace it. |

Kyouji, I just realized that those poles weren't attatched by anything. What I meant is to do a fence in the BG like this:
And have the spikes also. Then, instead of the balls on the posts, you would have various mario enemies like you did, but with the EXACT same colors as the gate. All of them would have the exact same color.
I think this would look much better then just poles sticking out of the ground. |

Dear God
I know what those gravestones look like now...Those shortbread biscuits you get in those Mcvities collections. Could change it to Buscuit World maybe |

As for the graveyard, you've screwed it up even worse. The poles still don't look... remotely like poles. The various enemies at the top wouldn't be so bad if they were paletted correctly and not obnoxiously foreground-looking like they are.
And your gravestones are still blah at best. A few RIP ExGFX tiles would do it good. |

Hm. You don't appear to have used the top half of the background... You could use HDMA to have a moon at the top that doesn't scroll. |

Well, it would not really be pointless really, it would help with the set up of the area, actualy that is something i may do in my hack.
And actualy i have already done something like that but it was a sun rather then a moon.
But it is up to you. |

Becaues it'd immediately scroll off the screen and be pointless |

The tombstones look bland and could use something of a pattern at the very least, that is if not anything writen.
As it is they look like just odd misshapen rocks.
Why not just put R.I.P on them?
Nothing else looks bad, but some kind of dark cloudyness would help the background big time.
These are just sudgestion by the way and ofcource you do not have to do them.
As for a moon, why not at the begining of the level just put it on the forground and have it look as if it was in the background?

Overworld: That's because I didn't want to clumsily put up several screenshots detailing every change. The general message I was trying to convey is "Things have been improved." You can also see a differently worked ladder.
Cemetary: Yeah, the poles and statues are in the background (same as the forest ground you keep mentioning), while the tombstones are foreground. As for a moon in the background... That would be really, really awkward, since... It would keep scrolling around over and over again and give the impression that there's several moons there. |

For the main overworld shot, mainly all I see changed is the path palette. It looks better tho. Good job.
For the graveyard, I like the poles that you put up with the statues. The koopa one looks kinda weird sitting there. I know there is a pole, but it just looks odd. Question: Are the poles BG, and the tombstones FG? If so, then if its a moving BG, ignore my comment about the koopa. The forest ground that is by the tombstones still looks bad. Try using some custom graphics for it, and make it look better please. I like the grass ground with a dark palette tho. It actaully looks very good. Maby some custom GFX would look better, but I don't really know what you could come up with. And since it's a graveyard....maby some bones? Just a thought. A moon would look fuckin awesome in the BG tho...Oh, and mist might be a nice effect.
Good job, lookin forward to any sort of test. Demo or final release. Keep up the good work. |

So this is what I have for the background so far. (I was bored, so I moved up the schedule. Heh.) Same poles and ground, but the tombstones are removed, and there's a statue at the top of each of the poles. Those that are pictured are all that are there. It does look a little barren, so I'll likely add a few dark clouds here and there.
As for the foreground...
Tombstones... I don't know what to do with them, as I said earlier. They're better than they started as but not as good as I'd like. The ground, for the time being, is the typical grass graphics with a dark, lifeless palette. Depending on the response I get, I'll leave it as it is or try something else - I actually kinda like it, but as you may have guessed, my ego prevents me from properly judging my own work. |

Mmmm... the wonderful feeling when you no longer need to vomit... mmmm...
*slaps self*
This is much better! I realize I haven't commented on this before, but it seems to have gone from being a first-aid device to awesomeness! I wish I had more to say but my opinions have already been stated. Just one thing about the newest screen: That thin mountain in the upper-left has a weird-looking peak... I'm probably imagining it though, so don't worry about it.
It's really nice to see a hack from the master critic himself! Now don't screw up, k? |
