I'm mainly into 70s rock. Queen, Jefferson Starship, Doobie Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd...the whole nine yards basically. Some sixties, like Jefferson Airplane. Then eighties music like Starship and some others. Some stuff of today like Matchbox Twenty, Five For Fighting, Goo Goo Dolls, Fuel
And I could go on forever. |

It all depends on what kind of a mood im in...today its more calm with a little bit of darkness in it so id listen to something like Bjork - Army of me or Lou Reed - The bed...but I listen to everything from Beethoven to Soilwork, so just take your pick.

Augie March's 'Owen's Lament' is haunting and numbing. The title references the WW1 poet Wilfred Owen, which sets the background - it's a soldier about to go away to war. Starts out really shostly and subdued... I get shivers down my spine when the less subdued instrumentation kicks in and the music builds to a crescendo. Then it flatlines as his voice becomes even more ghostly as he sings aobut his death. Lyrically stunning, just to make it even better. It's just plain moving.
At the other end of the spectrum is Augie March's 'This train will be taking no passengers'. Aggressive, stomping, rolling, kinda dark as far as Augie March goes. The subject matter is simple enough - our society is a train hurtling into hell, not slowing down, not letting anyone off, with the singer as sort of a demonic narrator or conductor.
This song like all Augie March is also lyrically amazing - now that I know all the words it smoothly rolls off my tongue. "Onward and on this strange-wrought bird/onward and over the black-coffee earth/onward and on this laughing train/to the end of its low low mirth" is sheer brilliance, as is the rest.
The song just grabs me, immediately from the opening guitar strum. Especially when I'm drunk, when I'm prone to stomping and flailing about while shouting the lyrics (which still flow rather well with little memory loss) if I hear the song.
And, given that this band is the only one I ever enthuse about on this board, a few other songs which never fail to stir me:
1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins. It's one of those songs that can evoke a variety of reactions - it's the allpurpose nostalgia song, and I firmly believe it will be a staple of retirement homes and oldies stations in 60 years, and that I will still love the song. Say what you will about Corgan, this song is a damn fine legacy to leave.
Modest Mouse's entire 'the Moon and Antarctica', but especially "the Stars are Projectors".
More generally, I'm a sucker for building, swelling, shifting, uber-dramatic instrumentation, in songs like:
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists to Heaven Like Antennas"
Explosions in the Sky - First Breath After Coma
Bjork - Bachelorette
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight
Blackheart Procession - A Light So Dim

Pink Floyd uses far better sampling, and has more interesting imagery in their music. Although it is not as complex, it has far better merits than Led Zepplin's 'oooooh, ooooooh, *obscure Satanic reference c/o Jimmy Paige* oooooh, oooh *drug reference* oooooh, ooooooh, *sexual referance* YEAH!'
The Who, on the other hand, are very talented, and have an amazing drummer. Although the Canadian band the Guess Who with Burton Cummings, could kick the shizzle out of the Who.
For my music, I enjoy Anal Cunt because of their senseless hilarity. I enjoy bands such as Torgeist for their blatent remarks of racism and Satanism. They too are hilarious, as most Satanic or Racist bands are. Of course, it must be taken with a grain of salt.
For pure talent, give me Danzig, that man has amazing vocal chords. For awesomeness times four, give me Blind Guardian. The single best power/fantasy metal band ever. In the veins of Death Metal, I'd have to say old Possessed, Old Pagan, Old Funeral, etc. are quite amazing. |

Mos def. I have most of their CDs. Sounds of Science, Ill Communication, the famous Liscence to Ill, and Hello Nasty.
They've got some pretty spectacular stuff. |

What's not to like about this song? It gives a voice to every highschooler. It's loud, obnoxious, and very very catchy.
NOFX's The Decline
18:21 minutes long. You never every get bored listening to this. Even if it was just the words, The Decline would be very interesting, as it deals with the state of our society. |

Hmm..R&B/Rappish songs I like. Beyonce's new album. Well half of it is good. The other half it goes into slow songs. Some of the slower songs are pretty good. I love Alicia Keys. Her music is soothing and soulful. |

I love evanescence... i know their resent, and haven't been out for long, but i recon their music is so cool, i can relate to most of the things they sing about... and you can feel different each time you listen to them (emotional)...

Guess most people would rather not say why, eh?
As much as I like Stairway to Heaven, I'd have to take When the Levee Breaks and The Rover over it, as for as Zeppelin songs are concerned.
EDIT: heh...minor typos are fun...Stairway to Heave...too many directions that could be taken. |
