Thanks for the help guys. I managed to figure out the pallette thing, so work is well under way.

It's always good to see some old school flavor coming back to the scene. Welcome back, Omniverse.

FCEUXD is the most hacker friendly windows NES emulator out there. FCEUxd has palette and pattern table viewing, but it won't let you edit the graphics in real time.

YY-Chr is my tile editor of choice. You have to manually set the palette yourself, but it has options to rearrange the pattern tables so that finding things can be much, MUCH easier than simply piecing together tiles by hand.

Beware: for the average gamer, SMRemix is hella hard. But for a hack made so long ago, and even compared to most SMB hacks now, it was awesome. Just plain awesome.

2) FCEUXD. No, the name is not a joke.
3) If you can get Java to work, Tile Molestor.

I've decided after a long long abscence to get back into the game. Please bear with me and my antiquated ways cuz it may take me some time to readjust to everything and get caught up on what I've missed.

To introduce myself, my name is Shawn. I also go by Omniverse. I used to do ROM hacks about 5 or 6 years ago (the most popular one being Super Mario Remix, which me, Lagomorph and sl1me worked on). I stopped hacking for a variety of reasons but have decided to take up the hobby again.

I'm working on a hack of Super Mario Bros. right now. Most of the graphics are going to be based on the graphics used in Super Mario Remix (with some changes/improvements, and of course new levels). While I have picked up on most of the techniques I used to use pretty quickly, I do have some questions:

(1) In the palette, how do I change the primary background colors (as in blue in normal levels, black when underground, etc)? I can't recall how we did this in Super Mario Remix, as the data seems to be stored somewhere other than where the normal palette information is.

(2) I know there are better emulators now, but are there any windows emulators as hacker-friendly as NESticle (as in they give you the palette and vrom complete with hex values)?

(3) Is there a better tile editor than Tile Layer Pro?

I'm sure I'll be asking a lot more as I work more on it (I expect to do a lot this weekend on the project). Thanks in advance for your advice.

Man, I forgot how much I enjoyed doing this!
