The breaking of a block uses their own tiles. Two tiles to be exact. One is a circle and the other is like a diamond (which on the SNES would be the circle rotating). The springboard is just three tiles: the untouched spring, each 8x8 tile rotated 90 degrees, the squished one, the one that is before and after the BOING, and the completley flattened one, which is just mirrored.

Nothing else is used with the springboard graphics...

However, I find it really difficult to find a suitable replacement for the springboard myself...

Uh, what?

The springboard graphics aren't used for anything but the springboard. They remain unchanged throughout the entire game.

the GFX for the spring board is also used for the "smashed bricks" GFX
