Yes, Viewtiful Joe is a sidescroller. And a good one at that. Sure there are only a few levels in it, but it is a great sidescrolling game that you can get addicted to. Really good. Plus it is hard... unless you are good...

Ah, Superman. Let's fly through rings all day!

Sidescrollers will live as long as Mario, Samus, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Megaman, Sonic, and Dracula from Castelvania live. They are the rulers of sidescrollers.

My opinion is basically the same as Cheveyo's in this case.

Side-scrollers won't die... and I'm sick of people thinking that New = Bad and Old = Good.

There has ALWAYS been bad games. You want exemples? Play Superman and be amazed (in the negative sense)!

See, this is what we have the GBA and the DS for. More sidescrolling 2D games.

(I don't think the genre's ever going to die, but more developers want to push the envelope instead.)

There were terrible games back then, too, you know. Not everything was as perfect as your memories, 'improved' by your desire for better games, lead you to believe.

Of course, I like a good sidescroller a lot, too. But I wish people who bring up the crappy games made now and want the 'good old days' back would stop forgetting that there always have been and always will be shitty games.

It would be awesome, if it was made back in the day where awesome games were made. Sidescrollers are in decline and all, but I doubt they'll ever end. We're definitely not going to see old school games again, what I awesome you're definining as fantastic.
I mean, where do we find those minds that told us the eastmost peninsula was the key?

Well, I've never played the game, but isn't viteful joe (or however it's spelled) a side scroller. Cause if it is, there's a big exception to your rule cause that game got rave review from everyone. Also, I know what you mean by playing old games, i spend the majority of my game playing on classic games from nes, snes, and genesis. Don't know, maybe i'm thinking back on childhood, or i just haven't played those games in a long time, or just can't afford new games. Who knows, but i do think that side scrollers are starting to fade. I loved the metroid games on GBA/SP, those were great, but still, they aren't going to be coming out in great numbers like back in the day when side scrollers were as common as GTA clones are today. I hope that a market for side scrollers opens. Maybe in the future side scrollers will be left to smaller companies who don't have much money but have really creative ideas and they will make glorious side scrollers cause tehy aren't as hard to make (not even sure how much easier they are to make.).

Okay, I guess I need to elaberate.

I don't think because of technology's increase, that it's not "possible" to make sidescrollers anymore. It's just that developers aren't doing it that often these days.

Thing is, I'd really like to see huge sidescrolling games. With the power of consoles today, we could have a 2D Metroid game, like what, 10x the size of Zebes from Super Metroid? Probably even larger than that. And am I the only one here that would think that would be awesome?

Look at Castlevania SoTN. That game is enormous, being a sidescroller on a 32bit platform, and it's considered to be one of the best games for the PSX.

True, there will always be sidescrollers, but the genre to me has really died out. I've only really stuck unto the classics, which were pretty much mentioned already; Megaman (although none of them rank up to the originals in my opinion), Metroid, CV, and so on (I don't know what it is, but I really don't like the new Sonic games for the GBA).

Maybe I've just become picky. =\

I want a TRUE sequel to the original DKC games. It would be preferable to be like DKC2 rather then 3. You know, music that is actually good and that son of a bitch Koin gone.

Need more 2D megaman...

Megaman is the only side scroller I'll ever play, with the exception of some sonic games.

The sidescroller may be in decline, but even if most people stop making them, we can always count on Capcom (Megaman), Sega (Sonic), Konami (Castlevania) and Nintendo (Metroid) to keep bringing new sidescrollers to the table. The Megaman Zero series is in it's sixth iteration already, there are the Sonic Advance games and Sega promises a new, traditionally sidescrolling Sonic game for the DS, we've been treated to a long line of Castlevania games on the GBA and of course Nintendo won't let 2D sidescrolling Metroid games die out, what with Fusion and Zero Mission, and in the future, Dread.

But you know what? Even if the genre is rare to see these days, I think there's a bigger ratio of good sidescrollers versus bad now than there ever have been. The thing is, when the NES was out, everybody designed games for it, it was virtually uncontested, the NES was videogaming, so there were tons and tons of poor-quality sidescrollers, laced with a few gems like Castlevania, Mario Brothers, Megaman and lesser-known titles like Gargoyle's Quest 2 and A Boy and His Blob. But now, as gaming has become too big for small, independant developers to handle, the crummier sidescrollers are virtually unseen outside of games based on movies (which have historically lacked), but the good ones are still around.

The day Nintendo anounces they have no further plans for any more 2D Metroid games, or the day Capcom throws in the towel and retires Megaman is the day sidescrolling has died. But I don't think that day will ever come. Not to mention that there's still a huge sidescroller fanbase online. This very forum is spawned partly from Lunar Magic, which people are using to create new sidescrollers, not to mention the plethora of game development programs out there like Game Maker.

So I don't think the end of the sidescroller is near. At least not if I have anything to do with it...

No I don't think so. If they die down, they will only spring up in a few years. Becuse there is advanced technology dosen't mean that 2D platformers are dead. Infact i'm not too surprised if they started to be more common again in a few years.

I mean, just look at our current generation of gaming.

Most sidescrollers that come out nowadays for consoles, are either absolutely horrible, or decent. Nothing really too fantastic compared to games back in the day.

And now look at technology. The GBA seemed to be the last drive of preserving sidescrollers, but now we're in a new age with the DS and PSP. The DS seems to still be bringing out a few sidescrollers, thankfully (I've heard about a 2D Metroid, CV DS, Super Mario Bros DS, etc), but the PSP is no exception. Is there even one sidescrolling game out there for the PSP currently? Not that I've seen, but I rarely keep up with handhelds so I could be missing something.

Consoles aren't really an exception either, these days. Sure there was what, one good Contra game for the PS2? But isn't that pretty much it?

But to put it simply, I think the type of games that I have grown up and played since before I could even talk and walk correctly, are slowly coming to an end. They're a rare occassion these days, and when systems get even more advanced, they seem to fall even deeper into the shadows.

I'm not saying once the DS is gone there will never again be a sidescrolling game, but I think in our current generation, sidescrollers are going to be a very rare thing from here on out.

What do you think? Agree? Disagree?

Oh yeah, I'd rather not see sidescrollers die.

I guess it's just something I'll have to come and accept. Either that, or I've become way too much of a classic gamer (over the past months I've been playing nothing but my Genesis and SNES).
