yeah that could be cool, but I don't think it will ever be as good as super mario kart multiplayer

P.S. Any peeps here play mario kart over the internet? (www.zbattle.net)

That's just simple code hacks. I'm talking about actually editing tracks and graphics (and maybe sound ). The data is all compressed in the ROM and nobody, including myself, seems to be able to write a fully working compressor that can match Nintendo's, so some repointing would be necessary.

True, MK64 was kinda boring, but imagine how awesome it could be with custom tracks and some reprogramming?

Yay! MarioKart64 hasn't been a good successor to the original, I agree... anyway: what about the AI-thing in MarioKart?! Is there no skilled hacker on this board willing to figure this out? There'd be plenty new hacks for this wonderful game in the future...

Hey, d4s!! Even though you're done with Mario Kart R, don't you want to create a milestone like Temporal Flux or Lunar Magic for Mario Kart?! We'd all look up to you then... if we don't do it yet^^

Well, if anyone here knows anything about N64 pointers, we could start trying Mario Kart 64.

I think OK impala has got the AI to work in his unreleased mario kart hack.

When Super Mario Kart was successfully hacked, I worked like a maniac to try to do the same for F-Zero. Unfortunately, the tracks are stored in a completely different, impenetrable format. F-Zero would have been a great game to hack.

Street Racer may have better graphics but the gameplay sucks! Would be cool to see all the mario kart drivers in it though

Yeah, thats what makes it hard. Ever thought about finishing Mario Kart R d4s? I think this is a good time to show you all my awesome mario kart tracks I made a few months back. I only changed the first 3, but they all work in GP mode still (e.g. AI follows the track). There nothing special. Download the IPS here:

i consider mario kart r finished.there are still issues here and there, buts it remains the best overall smk hack imho, and i dont say that just because its my hack.
to this very day, its the only one that has tracks, graphics and music changed.
besides, its fun and it didnt take me longer than 4 weeks to complete.

im currently unable to test your patch, sorry.

i dont plan to return to smk. it was okayish when i started out with romhacking (it was my first hack), but the whole game is limited in too many ways.
especially the graphics suck.
what this game really needs is:

-many more animation frames for the driver sprites
-3 layer 16 colour scrolling backgrounds
-a fullscreen singleplayer mode

i dont think it would be worth the effort, better start with a technically more advanced game and implement the smk drivers there (street racer would be a fine example, cause its a shameless mario kart ripoff, yet manages to have greatly improved graphics.)

depends on he skill of the graphics artists, but a great help is rendering low-detail models in a 3d graphics program of all animation frames to get the proportions right, then use these as reference.
i used that technique myself when i did mario kart r one year ago.

yeah fair enough Ok Impala im sure it is very time consuming making the hack. Maby you should ask some people on Acmlm's board to help make some sprites? Im sure theres a lot of people that would love to help?

Ok!

Editing the sprites isn't really easy since there are many. Also, not all sprites are stored at the same offsets, some are compressed. For instance, try winning the cup with Kirby in the Super Mario Kart R hack. You'll see he will have the wrong body in the congrats scene. Same problem with his name, the name Kirby won't appear in the GP results screen.

There are many of these small things left to be found. I've already found several of them (like the body for the congrats screen) but since my ROM hacking skills aren't *that* great I still have a long road to go. Same goes for the spriters (Stifu and Sasori) who are struggling to draw those sprites with the limited palettes available.

Hm, I don't recall ever editing the sprites. Also, this is the official place to get my hacks.

yup sprites are a cunt to make in mario kart, too many damn angles and sizes on the racers! I can't believe there haven't been anymore good mario kart hacks since d4s released his mario kart documentation:

Super Mario Kart R is more of a graphics hack. It has minor track alterations, but they all look completely different. Kirby's taken over Toad's spot, too!

And this place has all of HyperHacker's hacks. 5 in total. The latter are all already converted ROMs though
Enjoy!

And oh yes! I'm also one of the patient ones waiting for Ok Impala's hack.
If I could be a tester, it'd be a dream come true. I've been following this hack for ages! And the main problem is drawing the sprites...

The mario Kart R hack kicked ass. Even tho the basic structure of the tracks were unchanged the graphics and little shortcuts put in kicked some serious ass.
This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
