I'd go with at least 1.5ghz and 256MB. You might get away with less depending what you use it for though. |

hmm, if you throw in some programs, the wireless keyboard and mouse, then i think $300 is an appropriate price. Without it, then $200 is what I think people should pay for it at most. If you feel $300 works, then float that around and see. You may have a taker at that price... |

You think I could put i in a bargan magizine and prolly get 300 for it? works great for like a family computer, I could prolly add in a cd case of programs and games and the keyboard is also wireless so is the mouse. |

700MHz isn't worth a lot...
640MB RAM, that depends on how fast it is--if it isn't DDR (which I highly doubt), then it is going to be hard to sell
40gb HD--i'd keep that and just pick up another one if you need the space
64mb video card--my geforce2 MX 400 current goes for $30
Cmedia sound card--probably worth $5 at most
whicked box with CS lightup fans--i'd keep the case if you think it is wicked |

If you have a duron, then maybe a pentium 1 chip may fit in there as well but that is at the same level of duron so it makes no difference. Maybe you can try to convince your parents to get a new computer because that computer is pushing 10 years old |

Having a faster HD probably will help. My computer's about the same age, judging by the speed, and it really sped up when I stuck a 7200RPM in it. I can search all 32GB of it in a few seconds, as opposed to taking 10 minutes for the old 20GB drive. (You'd really be surprised how much difference it can make.) |

you can try taking out one stick and check performance, but you are probably just better off leaving all 650MB of RAM and trying to reduce how many different programs are running at once. |

having more RAM can slow down your system because there is more overhead involved in managing more RAM. But in general, it helps because more of memory of the running program can fit. Howver, since you state you have a Duron, it infers that you may have an older hard drive interface protocol. Which means getting a faster HD will not help in your case too much. Getting a faster HD will offset the RAM management overhead when you get more RAM.
In short, if money is not an issue, I'd recommend getting a new computer. But if you can get a new computer, then more RAM will help your programs in addition to turning off any program that is non-essential |

Can memory slow down your system because I have a AMD duron 700mhz with 650mb of ram would that slow it down or make it faster? |

giving memory directly? no you can. but you can help the situation by closing any program you are not using. that way, more of active memory can be devoted to the program you running. |
