I have to disagree. I've used both and I have to say XP is superior in terms of speed and stability. XP also doesnt seem to have any memory leak issues - at least not any I've noticed. Of course, if you keep visual themes on in XP, that uses resources and makes it about even with 2K, if not a bit slower - but I don't use themes.
I'd suggest XP SP2. Also, I suggest putting ALL YOUR DRIVERS on that CD beforehand to save a lot of time!
For me, I'd need a CD with at least:
-AIM and DeadAIM
-Codecs - Nimo codec pack, or FFDShow and XViD codecs
-Drivers
-Firefox 1.0.4
-Java "JDK" package
-mIRC/other IRC client
-Nero
-PSP 7
-Winamp
-WinRAR and WinZip (WinRAR uncompresses too slow for me)
Also, don't forget...
-Backup your entire Desktop and My Documents directories
-Backup any program logs or saved profiles |

Activation really isn't a problem unless you've blown out four or five computers and used the same CD for all of them. And even then, dealing with the activation hotline isn't that difficult. You know how everybody complains about outsourcing to India? I actually found the guy I got helpful and relatively easy to understand. (There was only one number I missed through the entire fifty-something character long activation code.) |

Wether or not you use the FAT32 FS shouldn't matter -- burning to CD uses a different file system entirely (afaik)...

Believe me, 2000 rocks. Definitely use that. (not to mention XP has that damned activation "feature") |

No I don't think I can back anything up.. I'm still using the fat32 file system, and I'd like to change this.

You could just create a partition where you keep all important data and another for your operating system. I would put anything on the disk you cant easily download or get access to. |

I recommend Textpad, Proxomitron, AVG, Hex Workshop, Winamp, Trillian, and VLC Player. More good programs can be found here.
Also, this may be of interest. You can make a custom install CD that has all your stuff installed for you.  |

I'll be upgrading from Windows ME "finally" into Windows 2000 or XP; not sure which one yet.
I have so many pests on my computer, that I can't get it completely clean without a full format, which I'll be doing right before the install. I have 2 blank discs. I'll be using one for an OS upgrade, but then I have this other disk..
What essential programs/files would you put on such a disk?
I already know I'll be putting on Firefox, Ad Aware SE, and the AcmlmBoard distributable 
Does anyone else have any ideas on what to put on this program backup disk of mine? |
