i use snestool under xp frequently because ive just grown used to it despite its flaws.
its not that bad either and fine for most tasks.
i just wouldnt use it when creating an ips file meant for release because of the known issues.

NetSplit, I think what d4s just said is he's not using it for anything to do with IPS files. k? k.

d4s: SNEStool doesn't always create and use IPS patches correctly, nor does it support the RLE function in IPS (at least in patch creation. Maybe in patching, too?). It's really quite crappy.

The editor for Zelda 3 that you're thinking of is Hyrule Magic. It's not quite Lunar Magic, and it's got some issues (dungeon doors...), but it's certainly a good start. It's on http://www.Zophar.net , somewhere amongst the hacking utilities. As for Sonic 2, mm...well, a lot of the good sonic hacking sites I knew of are dead...but http://ssg.g4m3r.net/ might have some useful stuff for you. Aside from that, good luck.

Edit: More sonic stuff at http://ssrg.shadowsoft-games.com/

I understand the whole rom request.
I just hate it when EVERY question I have they tell me to google it.
That's annoying.

When it comes to looking for ROMs, people are going to tell you to use Google. And you can't blame them, since we are not allowed to link to ROMs. Placing a link to a ROM/ROM site can get this site in trouble. So, whenever you need a ROM, you have to search for it on your own. There's nothing we can do there.

Your best places for ROM hacking utilties, information, editors, etc., I can give you a list of sites:

http://www.zophar.net
This place has lots of utilties, documents, hacks, and even a forum. Definately the place to go for your ROM hacking stuff.

http://www.romhacking.com
Has lots of documents, some utilties, and a forum also.

http://desnet.fobby.net
Has some documents, and some really good utilties.

http://panicus.org
A collection of ROM hacking sites, where information is plentiful.

The reason we tell people to search for Google, is because you can find these sites through Google, instead of me listing them for you. If you type in "ROM Hacking" in Google, you'll definately get some results. I understand that newbies can get overwhelmed, but try to do some research before asking questions.

Right on.

This is a cool forum.
I swear that if one more person told me to "google it" for help my head was going to explode. That doesn't help me if I don't know what it is that I'm looking for or if what I'm looking at is what I need.

From what I read on the site, yes you can.

Have fun man! And remember, if you have any questions, don't hesitate. Asking questions is the key to getting smarter.

I know it sucks that DOS isn't compatible with Windows XP, but there is a way around it.

Also, if you're still not comfortable with the basics, read this:

I have a REALLY old wizardry game and I want to continue my game on my xp pc.

You must avoid SnesTool at all costs, it's just a buggy IPS patcher. Use Lunar IPS instead. It's in windows, and is very easy to use. You can find it here

Don't use Snestool cause it's evil, use instead.

Hi.

I have acouple of questions and sugestions to what whould be nice to have.

How do I use the DOS tools on WinXP. ~~I.E. Snestool & segatool

I had a sonic 2 hack going a long time ago but had to scrap it because I couldn't find a free editing program. The one I had used java but would only let me edit the land portion so I had sprites everywhere and invisable walls. I also would really like to work on a zelda 3 hack but I don't know where to find the program for that either. I was kinda hoping for a userfriendly interface like Lunar Magic.

I don't know alot about hacking roms. I know what the userfriendly programs will tell me to do. Basically everything has to be simplified. Hence the Rom Hacking for a semi-n00b.

Thanks for any help given.
