True. I'll get there, though, and then we'll see.

But hey, Smallhacker, it seems like you're still going to get yours out first

I'll be sure to work that extra bit harder for you, Smallhacker. Don't worry, having two competing editors can spur some people to work harder on theirs, which is better for everyone else .

Would you people mind stop stealing my ideas? I have a next to working program called Lemetaal (only thing left is saving) which have got an easily changeable menu system containing addresses to change.

Features:
Menu system. Ability to create links to other menus.
Hex edit. A value is shown as a hex number. Can be increased/decreased.
Dec edit. Same as above, but shows Dec.
List edit. Like hex edit, but it loads a list from the data file and shows the text found in it instead of the hex number.

Edit: Now I have to rush the thing to a release. And you know how my latest "rush to release" turned out... *coughsprite-o-maticcough*

well, The original Idea was to help out those people who were bad with hex eeditors, and maybe make things faster for vets. I'll add an expandable scripting engine as well once I get to that stage, so people can write their own scripts for changing certain offsets in SMW (ex. set up a script that will change all offsets to x, and then finish). I think you guys would like it, even though it will have to be in VB, but I will post a set of VB runtime files on my site for those people who don't have them. About bugs, well, lets just say I will follow Blackhole's excample. The program will edit only unlocked ROMS with a 0x200 byte header at first, though, and not others. It shouldn't take too long, since this is a smaller program.

And habsolute, I might just take you up on your offer and add SMWOE as an add-in. I do have the "darkscript" idea set up, and it shouldn't be overly hard, just enough to have an excuse to annoy my IT 9-10 teacher to hell and back .

BMF, I did have that thread in mind, as well. I should have asked if there were any ideas for alternate functionality. Are there?

Edit: I put together a list of offsets to be changed, so that will be done tomorrow. Can't wait for the Computer programming part of the course, should get a lot of extra marks there for this and other projects, including a card game with AI.

The Super mario world Dev environment was going to eventually have that feature and the official website was going to have a downloadable update for the list of addresses.
the user will eventually be able to either download the update though the web or using the program use an automatic update feature....

if your interested in doing so perhaps you could join the open source project....up to you but i was going to include the feature once i'm done the power up stuff i'm currently working on...i'm also working on a GUI as well for the program...

i'm sure it wouldnt hurt to include the feature either before or at the same time as the power up stuff

All that takes only slightly longer than an editor, gives you more control, most likely a nicer GUI, and you don't have to worry about bugs in the editor screwing up your rom.

Good for you!

As for the rest of us... we'll take chances and back up our roms before editing.

Do you have every single one of the offsets memorized? How about what values they should be set to for each effect? I would much prefer a quick little utility that has them all ready to edit over busting out the offset list and using a hex editor.

Not very easily at all, which is what I said. Lunar Magic speeds up the process tenfold and adds a bunch of other features at that. Level data follows patterns and such that makes utilities for them useful. Offsets... not so much.

What are we talking here? Offsets. Single values that can easily be found and edited. And I think that unless Darkflight here has some l33t API skillz, which I don't think nearly enough people in the world have, it'd probably be best just to use a hex editor.

That's pretty stupid reasoning, Glyph. You could do everything Lunar Magic does with just a hex editor, too, ya know.

That's why I hate this channel. I can't stay up until eleven... Give me news at 6, dammit =/

I thought about doing something like this...

...until I came to my senses and figured out how pointless this would be. Unless you can edit something that you can't as easily with a hex editor (which I doubt, since you called it an offset editor), this is really just a waste of time.

Hey!

I am working on Something I call "SMWOE", or "Super Mario world Offset Editor", designed to allow people to edit certain offsets in SMW easier. I'll also add a nice surprise. Any suggestions on what offsets you would really like to see made editable? I already have a few.
