Looks like this thread (and a video card) can go in the gutter.

I've solved the problem - my video card is simply burnt out! It's a cheap model with no fan, and had been overclocked to the extreme several times. Sorry for bothering anyone.

Boot into Safe Mode, then access the video driver settings. Maybe it is a way too high refresh rate your screen doesn't like. In nVIDIA's configuration manager, it is possible to save the refresh fate related to a specific resolution. Then try to boot into normal mode again.
Does this happen in specific resolutions only ?

I don't get this at all. After installing any version of their video card drivers on either Windows 2000 or XP, the display goes blank at the end of the splash screen showing "Windows 2000/XP Professional". Specs-

Mainboard: ASUS A7V8X-MX SE
CPU: Athlon XP 2000+
RAM: 512mb
Video card: eVGA.com GeForce FX 5200 AGP
Chipset: VIA (KM400?)

If you want more information about my system, I have a CPU-Z log which gives the BIOS version and such details. Note that I've got 2 computers set up now, I'll be very clear on which one my posts apply.

Edit: This may not be related, but why do my web browsers (IE, Firefox, Netscape) lock up when trying to access Windows Update? I'll see if installing SP1 or SP2 fixes it.
