And if it was, wouldn't THAT make the hack all the better?

Well, in my opinion the hack looks better than other FF hacks I played. Well, to me the gfx don't look bad, I thought the story was about these demons from another universe trying to take over the earth. Cool and original.

A final boss where you would need to use a lot of strategy even at lvl. 50... what a dream that would be... make it happe, bud!

No, the hack is not THAT difficult.

Monsters give more than enough money and experience to make up for their big stats and AI.

Furthermore, every monster has it's own weaknesses. As stated earlier, Slimes may do big damage... but they can't touch thieves at all. Spell-casting monsters are intimadating... but mages withstand their spells very easily.

Also... there ARE easy enemies.

Yes, MaskDorks have a special attack... and? Yes, they can occasionally get lucky and do more than 1 damage, so what since you kill them in two hits at level 1?

Yes, I DID raised the difficulty quite a bit... but I raised it so that people may actually have to use a strategy to beat monsters, not so that every single random party may slaughter their party forcing them to level-up during 10 hours just to tackle the very first boss.

Yes, I WILL post more screenshots... and more GFX shall be changed.

Amateur graphics aside (since everybody else has already ripped on them well enough), if I'm going to get totally creamed within the first few battles because I can't level up, because I keep running away, because the enemies are (as you yourself put it) stupidly overpowered, the hack's going straight into the trash. You NEED to have a nice helping of stupidly underpowered enemies within a "safe zone" (like around the first town) in order to allow the player to level up a few times, even if they give you hardly any experience at all. It's a well-established RPG tradition.

Also, be sure to bring some pictures of the text (if that's the only other thing you changed) when you post the demo. You should also consider changing the old and tired maps to some extent. I can assure you that VERY few people are going to try this just for the monsters alone.

I like the graphics, provided you can alter all of the graphics in the game to have that style consistently throughout the game.

One thing that sucks about the game is the monster sprites. The monster sprites look horrible. You could not figure out any good monster sprites. Thats the only problem about the game.

zerodius. there's one problem with your hack. There's not enough "the author is going to commit suicide because he obviously can't hack, or make graphics, and is probably just fucking around with hackster and having his 3 year old nephew draw some graphics for him" in the hack.

Bad news: The graphics are unafraid to suck with GUSTO.

Good news: I like the idea with the enemy AI. Just dial it back a bit... you've GOT to have some easy-ish fights early on to build up.

EDIT: Darth Setzer, have my babies. :>

That's what makes it hilarious.

Maybe you should re-do all the graphics in your unique style. That would probably keep us entertained for a while.

I'm basically ready to release the first demo... well, almost.

The demo is completed up to the first boss. Once you pass the bridge, the demo is over.

Until I'm finished with the last details (and found a host), I'll post a link to the IPS patch.

For now...

Features:
-Altered stats (all monsters and classes)
-GFX changes (all monsters, some overworld sprites)
-Changed text (most of it is done)

What shall not be done in this demo:
-Maps shall not be changed
-various enhancement hacks by Disch not included

What is left to change:
-the amount of EXP and gold individual enemies give
-I think I forgot a few dialogues... maybe.

Now... screenshots time!

The heroes fighting a group of Imp replacements (which I named MaskDorks)! As espected, the first enemies are not hard to beat but...

...almost every enemy has an AI now! In short, almost every enemy has some kind of special attack or technique... and spell-casting is not limited to bosses only!

The replacement for the Wolf! The enemies that have no AIs usually have boosted stats in order to make up for their lack of intelligence. Nothing is easy anymore!

The replacement for the zombies. Virtually weak in everything and has no special attacks... but as stated earlier, all enemies are dangerous now: in this case, the enemies doesn't strike too hard and miss often... but they WILL paralyze you unless you kill them fast enough!

Some of the enemies in the hack will be strong... VERY strong. Fighting enemies such as Clusters and Slimes without first levelling-up is not a good idea. Here, a Cluster shows it's power by striking 5 times the White Mage for a whopping 34 points of damage.

Same battle, a bit later. This foolish low-level party just won't run from a fight. While the warrior's armor effectively reduce damage since the Clusters' attack power rely mostly on the amount of times they strike... the warrior's high defense won't protect him from the Clusters' special attack. In this case, it would be best to run.

The Slimes are the second-to-strongest normal enemies in the hack (well... in the prologue anyway). This is a rare sight: a Slime's strike actually connecting. The Slimes have low agility and accuracy but stupidly overpowered individual attacks. While Slimes can't touch high-level parties, this low-level party is getting slaughtered! Each type of character has it's own strenghts and weaknesses... and those differences are actually important in the hack! Thieves never have to worry about most undead and slime-type enemies becease of their high agility but magical enemies tend to devastate them. Mages suffer massive damage from enemies such as Clusters and Knife Beasts but last actually longer than the mighty Warriors against enemies that rely on their spells and special attacks.

The screenshot you were probably waiting for! The boss fight of the demo! All of the bosses have a specific strategy that they use against your party. In Legion's case, he'll put the party to sleep and then hammer the party with Lit and Beam. After a short round of hammering the party, he'll heal and put the party back to sleep. How you can counter his strategy is up to you.

Whatever you do will NOT be as bad as the first time I tried hacking FF, so don't feel bad about whatever comes out. Just make sure that you get the facelift things asap and make good graphics, and a lot of people will probably play it because of eye candy alone.

I would actually like to have some help... but first, I want the hack to be somewhat playable. In short, first, I'll complete the prologue part of the hack (before the Bridge event) and then I'll let you edit the intro, bridge, and credits (if that was what you meant by help... but if you just meant about giving suggestions and comments as well as beta-testing... it's still appreciated).

Dude, we all started pretty bad at it. The way I got how to do it was, well, fiddling around with a hex editor, just to see what happens. Just make sure to keep a backup copy of the ROM.

Seriously, if you'd like help, I can give it.

Read the thread... too bad I'm really hopeless when it comes to hex-editing...

Maybe I'll try it sometime before an actual demo release...

There's some data Gavin and I found about getting a set party of four people and unchangeable names in the stickied (at least I think it still is) thread about Final Fantasy data just incase you wanted it.
