Splitting time among school, extra curicular activities, friends, learning ASM, getting new ideas, checking the boards, gathering data, and actually hacking, is pretty hard. I do most of my stuff on the weekend but occasionally I'll be able to find an hour or two during the week. Most of the stuff I've learned on ASM is having some of the functions explained (in the sense of character interaction, not in flags).

This summer, it should pick up, that's the reason we had a new release of SMILE *and the enemy gifs added *. Plus, I should have gathered more data by then for SMB2 (but it seems like other people are looking into it, so maybe there will be a lot of data floating around by then as well).

It's slow right now, the reasons are obvious. Every once and awhile, some high school student comes in and is able to wow a lot of the college students (I'd be able to get more done if I were in high school still, I didn't have anything to do then ). I'd just say be prepared for quite a few accomplishments this summer.

Ok!

It doesn't really matter as long as there are people working on hacks. For myself, hacking on Mario Kart is going really slowly, but someday our hack will get finished.

I think this is one of the more active rom hacking sites. I've seen more dead rom hacking forums anyway.

Actually, the activity in this forum is decent. And yes I expect the activity to pick up whenever school is out of the picture. School is the main reason why I hadn't even started/continued with my hacking projects. (Going to research if a certain GBA game is hackable, and try to finish my hacking documentation about a certain NES game)

Well the vets don't necessarily need to come by and teach the newbs a trick or two. As you've seen, a lot of newbs who've said they wanted to learn how to hack/ASM hack/etc and got no one to hold their hand have taken the initiative and actually started to learn, and of course, now the vets are starting to help these hackers get better and better.

Some of the few "fresher" faces I've seen are:

Skiffles
Chill Penguin
TheVarian
Jaspile
Rockman

These hackers have been around for a while but are just now really picking up steam. So this summer (when activity usually picks up because there's no school), we should see more activity and possibly some completed hacks. So I think the activity here is just fine here and is a lot higher than it was last year around this time.

I think that ROM hacking is a hobby that you need to put a lot of effort into. And that's what is scaring new people off. Personally speaking, I try to only post when I can actually help or when I release something. Mainly, because I'm terrible at expressing ideas. (Or maybe because not many people are interested in the games I hack )

i was, at one time, attempting to keep a runnnig list of romhackig related sites over on the TEK board (in one of it's many acmlmboard incarnations that would later be hacked and dumped).

at least part of that list is now on my site.

Nice Fx3. I don't mind the "slow pace" of this forum. It's not filled with drama or [too many] lamers, it's just good.

well actually ive been an observer for the past 8months only toying with rom editors like hyrule magic + lunar magic in my little spare time, but now I have a pretty good understanding of how it works in general but now i want more! lol i need the veterans to return to the forums and educate us newbs a bit(if they want to) yes there are some daily posts but you gotta admit the big guy veterans who know how to really innovate old games have been quiet as of late

There are several new posts daily in this forum.

Another poll just for the sake of having using the poll feature?

Hey the forums just seem a lil slow in general. I know rom hacking takes large amounts of time but still. wheres the fresh blood trying something radically new and the veterans tellen them itll never work etc etc
