Oh yes: Dillo with Tabs!

The patches are in the Gentoo ebuild system thing.

Yeah, and so far I've had to hard-reset my computer twice because of it

If dunno know how many resources Dillo uses, but since my main PC is being repaired, I'm using K-Meleon on my old one. It starts up a lot faster than Firefox but lacks some convenient details. But it supports mouse gestures by default and allows to modiy user specific files like userContent.scc, user.js and others via the preferences menu

When the computer comes back - I need to use that one for my work - I'll give it a shot then

I'm actually intresting in trying Dillo, but I probably would try it in Linux. I can't bother with Cygwin. :\

Sorry, I'm not downloading any other browser -- especially one where I have to compile the source, because I much prefer binaries -- so that is a little bit of a stupid argument

By the way, I wouldnn't have to complain about them if they actually worked
Windwaker: and by that logic alone...

Unfortunately for you, that's not what the Dillo developers have in mind. In fact, they couldn't care less about Windows as it stands.

If you want to port it to DOS or Win16... go ahead. Just don't complain when it doesn't work at first.

Hmmm... can you compile it on the Visual Basic thing that came with Office 97? What about the primitive Basic compiler on DOS? If it someone or somehow I could get a compiled version for Windows 3.11, that would solve my problem with Netscape being slow and incompatible with almost all new standards (Elderly 3.0), and IE refusing to install at all.

Maybe they work, the question is if they'd work in that.

Yeah, but most computer users wouldn't have a clue on what to do with source. :\ I understand it can be compiled for various operating systems, but having binaries available might help.

Windows/DOS people in general have never been used to compiling stuff on their own. And porting software to Windows is usually a nightmare... much less learning Windows' bastardized API set

...this would be the perfect browser for my 486. It does remind me about the old Mosaic in looks but it's probably more advanced than Mosaic yet fast.

Most Windows people aren't used to compile stuff themself nowdays, I probably would try to compile it for myself in Windows thought as i'm somewhat used to the diffrent compilers.

Colin: Dillo is available in source form, thus any operating system. I've compiled it on Windows.

That's strange - I have Firefox installed on my old Celeron 300 and it works like a charm. Quick loading time compared to IE on the same machine.

Plus, again, the thing's not available for Windows. :\ And what do *most* people on the net run?

That is an interesting browser. I wouldn't want to use Dillo for surfing because I'd go nuts without a full-featured rendering engine, but I can see how others would like it. As you said, if you want maximum efficiency, that will do it. People with ancient computers might not even be able to run a modern browser well. Dillo may also be useful to software developers who want to include some sort of HTML help documentation and a small, efficient, and free means of viewing it.

I'm currently using a recent nightly build of Camino (a Gecko-based browser for OS X) optimized for my processor, and it seems quite fast to me.

Well... it is way faster than Firefox (and Opera is the same speed as Firefox on GNU/Linux, so don't argue), but it is lacking severly in standards. I would switch to it when standards support is greater. Maybe I should take it up as a good C experiment and add them myself!

Only problem for most users: No Windows binary... so unless you guys have MinGW/Cygwin, you can't use it.
