This may also cause a lot of pointless boards saying stuff like OMG I BEET DWTLLC iN %5 MinuTEZ!1

And that would be bad

Guys, we're talking about ROM hack speedruns, not ROM hacking speedruns. That's a big difference.

But either way, it doesn't look like anyone is that interested anyway. ;x

This is true. I myself often have trouble fighting off urges to cheat at things as meaningless as a game of cards. It's sad at best :x

Huh. I guess the old saying "There is no honor among thieves" also applies to intellectual property theft.

Well, if you paid attention to anyone here, you would know a lot of people would probably cheat.

First, it's not a good idea. I know that it probably won't work. I was just bored.

Next, the solution is simple. All you have to do is make some guidelines for the hack to follow that would be easy to implement when beginning, but hell if you've already started. "No ExGFX" would instantly disqualify many new hacks, and you'd basically have to start over. It's not worth it.

That, and is anyone around here both immature enough to cheat and good enough to win, even when given enough time? I think not.

The idea is cool, but it would never work. What if someone has a hack they have been working on for a long time but havent said anything about it, then this contest starts and they submit it. Bam, they win.

I don't really think its a good idea. Speed Runs require doing something over and over to the extent that it can really only work if the levels are really, really good, and I don't really think any full hacks that that can be said of. There are some promising works in progress, but nothing complete. I mean, DW:TLC is fun, but would you really want to speedrun it? I sure as hell wouldn't.

Ask this question in a few years, though...

What do we win?

Speed run of DWTLC would be huge.

If this topic is not related to SMW hacking at ALL (well, it sorta is, but meh) then I will have a mod lock this thread. But at least hear, or read, me out.

Simply put, has anyone even considered doing a speedrun of a/few famous/popular SMW hacks?

If you're unsure of what a speedrun is, it's basically to finish the game as fast as you can using two methods while recording it. One way is to use save states to make a "perfect" run, or by pure speedrun without using any save states or anything - if you die, that's too bad. Either live with it or start over again. With save states, however, you can redo things as much as you can without having to redo the level or the game over. That is why the method with save states make the game looks like it's played by a "humanly impossible' person, and a lot less believable than those that did pure speedruns without save states.

If you want more information, here are two websites that will help you understand what I'm talking about: http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/ for save states speedruns (SSS) and here's a website that does speedruns without using save states http://speeddemosarchive.com/. You can even download videos in either site if you want.

Anyway, I know the majority of this SMW Hacking board would rather hack SMW ROMs than do speedruns, but I was wondering if anyone out there is actually working/considering it.

A good batch of ROM hacks that should be sped-run'd:

Demo World: The Legend Continues
Luigi's Adventure
Rob-Bomb's Quest
MarioSFXFer (something like that)

Those are the hacks off the top of my head. I know there's more though...

(You can add to the list that you'd like to see speed-run'd)

I just thought it'd be interesting.
