Well... depending on the compression, JPGs can look as good as PNGs, but the file size would rise dramatically. PNG (or GIF) is the best format to use for screenshots, in my opinion. |

Yes, it *is* that poor. That's the problem. |

I like the background, but I don't think it matches with the ground. If you change either of them or darken the colour on the ground, everything should look fine.

I think SMB1's World 3-1 could look good here! Get it on my site.
By the way, those screens look quite good for a newbie! |

There are all kinds of reasons to make a hack. The worst reason to make one is just to make one for everyone but yourself. But a little critisism from others can be a good thing too, if only to help you to learn from your mistakes.
Blue is always a good color for the sky, but seeing as your ground is a light shade of green, perhaps your sky could be an ever-so-slightly different shade of green or blue.
If you are going for a night-time theme, then add some stars or something to the background, and darken up the colors of everything else in the level (It's night, so the ground shouldn't be light up neon-green as if in broad daylight).
Just use basic logic (my logic may not be the best, I'm sure others feel differently than I do) and be creative. There are almost endless possibilities for level design and graphic layouts. Sometimes the best design comes from not taking any one particular person's advice, but a nice mixture of everyone's with a touch of your own. |

It could always be a night level. Even Nintendo did that with SMB3's 8-1 (or was it 8-2?) |

Thanks there's no point in making a hack if nobody wants to play it. So your opinion matters a lot. What color do you think would be best for the BG. |

The level is kind of plain looking, and the black background looks really bad with the current color choices of everything else, they just don't match. Other than those 2 relatively small gripes, I see no glaring flaws or horrid, eye tearing mistakes. Take your time, make sure nothing clashes too badly, and have fun. You seem to be off to a pretty good start. |

That doesn't really say anything. You'll probably need to provide the name of your hack and several more screenshots. |
