I'd say ASM... You use too much time doing one little thing, otherwise you'll spend an eternity (literally) trying to find something more creative to do with it, and fail miserably while mumbling binary to yourself. BMF and Mikeyk however, are an exception and I still commend their hard work.

To me, ExGFX and Level Design are my forte.
(Besides all that, I think we need to make an ultimate hack somehow. I've been massing a lot of new graphics yet to be seen.)

I actually played hacks that I liked very much, yet didn't use alot of ExGFX. I like the orginal graphics, and i'm not one of thoose who is on a quest to replace every damn tile in the game.

ASM is one of the more simpler language's to learn. But I hadn't got "hardcore" enough to bother learning 6502 ASM and whatever SNES is using now again. :/

Heh, I swear. A few of the tilesets in the orginal SMW is never used in hacks.

You do know this poll is about what's least important, don't you?

I think ExGFX is the most important.

Habsolutefate, that's not true at all. The only reason we're all voting ASM is because (1. we already have enough tools to make a good hack, 2.) no one has ever used ASM to make a good hack, only to complement one, and 3.) very few of us know how to do it

Edit: Oh, and gnkkwinrrul? You could make a flat level and with enough ASM, it'd be an awesome level.

Level design, definately. You could have a completely flat level with awesome ExGFX and it would be boring as hell.

It's defenatly (sp?) NOT ASM. Heck even just saving a level in Lunar Magic inserts ASM. Everyone who sais ASM is wrong.

Well, since I have no skills in Graphics, ASM, or anything else that requires knowledge outside of Lunar Magic, I have to say Level Design is the MOST important. Choosing which was least important was hard, though...I went with ASM because I think you can make a good hack just using the SMW engine.

This is assuming that by "SMW engine," I mean "SMW engine with the numerous ASM modifications done by Lunar Magic." Obviously, we'd have pretty much nothing in the way of SMW hacks without ASM, but let's just ignore that fact. Heh.

I figure graphics are slightly more important because they're generally more obvious. ASM can change the way a game plays, but new graphics can change the way a game feels.

"Quirks" are higher because without a bit of personality injected into the hack, it can be really...really...boring.

Isn't sprite placement kinda part of level design? What's a level without sprites? That's right: Boring as hell.

Now, when you guys vote Sprites, I think you misunderstand me. By sprites I mean NOT sprite edits, but that sprites are placed intelligenly in a level.

Not to worry i'm still working on it I was trying to make a point that's all..I have a feeling the ones who selected ASM can't or have never tried ASM changes to begin with...I think the poll should have been re-worded to make it more accurate. Perhaps something like "What is LEAST important that you have used in a SMW hack"

Most Important
1. ExGFX
2. ASM Hacks
3. Level Design
4. Sprites
5. Quirks
Least Important

I like to admire the ExGFX that people can use/rip/create in hacks. Especially if it looks really good. Then ASM hacks. Just seeing peoples awesome ideas *cough*BMF*cough* implemented into an already awesome game makes it even better. Then Level design. Your level needs to be interesting, no running for 3 screens across a flat piece of land covered in goombas. Then sprites. I dont really like the sprites that come with SMW except for the rarely used ones like light switch blocks, wigglers (happy to see they are being used more now), mega moles and some others I can't think of because they dont get used to often. So seeing more original sprites, especially any that are based of of YI sprites, would make this higher on the list. Then quirks. So some little secrets? They are fun, but some hacks just make it way to hard to find. Like they make you go thru an invisible wall as small mario, but make sure you have a fire flower in reserve because some ice blocks will be coming up, is not fun. Especially when it only leads to a "?" with a mushroom.

And where is "detail" on the list :o!?!? That would rank #3 for me and move the rest down one. Adding small details like shading, shadows, text on objects, hidden logos, sprites and objects that match the levels theme etc are awesome!!

So ya, thats my order.

So if ASM hacking is so unimportant perhaps i should give up working on a tool that will allow you to create new power ups/characters in the game huh....

If it wasn't for ASM advancements we wouldnt be as far as we are today....heck Lunar Magic wouldn't exist and how much do you want to bet you wouldn't see as many hacks if that tool didn't exist...

I voted sprites:

I think ASM is important if you can do it. You're very hard pressed to think of innovative level ideas using the existing game engine. With ASM hacking, (which, btw, don't forget is how custom blocks are made) you can create small changes in the engine to create new situations!

I was reading about creating a game and they were giving ideas and tips on how to keep the player interested and how to create challenge. The best way I saw, was rather than increase difficulty by making similiar situations more and more extreme, constantly changing the situation with something new, fresh, that requires a different technique keeps the challenge constantly changing, yet, doesn't make things too hard.

And because of this, ASM hacking can provide the situation changes needed to keep a hack fresh.

Of course this goes hand in hand with level deisgn, making proper use of the ASM hacks is very important.

Graphics also help change the feel of a hack. You can make a bright, sunny overworld seem like a dark, murky underworld instead, thus, keeping the player interested in the hack.

Level Design is probably the most important in my eyes. Sprites are good but I don't care for that as much as the others.

I really, really hope that whoever said "level design" misread the topic title :/

Most to least important in my eyes:
1. Level Design
2. ExGFX
3. Quirks
4. Sprites
5. ASM

ExGFX, mainly coz my fav games are without exgfx:

Mario Sec Reality 1, by FPI;
Mario Plus One, by GoYo;
Mr Z's first and second hacks;
the demo of Mario World lost levels, by GoYo.

all of those hacks above are fun and have an excellent level design, therefore they really don't need exgfx at all to be enjoyable.

ASM hacks... Even if I use them (via Block tool) I could easily do a hack without them.

1. Level Design
2. ExGFX
3. Sprites
4. Quirks
5. ASM hacks

ExGFX are number one? Of course they are considering that all you did was take graphics already made and inserted them into your hack.

Now, if ExGFX were all handrawn, then it wouldn't be a problem, but rips are really overused.

I say that sprites are among the least important. First off, very little sprite changes have been made and adding SMW sprites with the same graphics in a brand new tileset don't really work... well, in some cases.

My list of importance:
1. Level Design
2. Graphics
3. ASM
4. Quirks
5. Sprites

However, they are all important, among these five sprites are last.

Sorted by importance, it would be
1. Level Design
2. Assembler stuff (technical innovativeness)
3. Graphics
4. Details/"Quirks"
5. Sprites
for me.
This is a long thread. Click here to view it.
