Some bands like it while others don't. It all depends on whether you're mainstream (Filesharing BAD) or underground (Filesharing GOOD).

That's like saying that, say, UN volunteers who work in poor countries are just doing it to get a good resume. If you think all artists are doing it to get paid, you're just plain wrong. I can't explain how wrong you are. NoFX refuses to do interviews or be on MTV, The Offspring puts thier own songs on Kazaa before thier album is released, and you still say everyone is in it for the money? Money is a bonus, but for the majority of them, it's not what they're after.

I'm not saying I'm justified to download the music. None of us are unless we own the album (and if we did, why not just rip the music?). But on the other hand, it's... strange. Might not be moral, but it's legal in Canada now. That just doesn't seem right.

That probably pissed off the RIAA though. Regardless of whatever stance you take, pissing off the RIAA is always good fun.

The only thing I can think of is if you have it on another format. Like, I've been getting albums from thrift stores, but it's kind of impractical to bring a turntable around with me wherever I want to listen to 'em.

Wrath: PLEASE. You know his history? He basically made himself after YEARS of slogging through obscurity. He didn't get filthy rich off of Devil Without A Cause going septuple platinum. He was there already. (And yes, I saw that interview. Or at least that soundbite.)

Clockworks: Have you ever recorded a demo? It's entirely possible that he lost that much on it. Or were you referring to the "love of music" bit? If you are, explain the billions of musicians that AREN'T signed to big-money deals. Are they all just there trying to get paid?

You may want to take this to PMs; this may get real ugly real quick.

Stress? Me? Are you joking?

In all seriousness, I am next to never "stressed". I do, however, hate injustice.

Paying for music downloads by using services to get around ridiculous music industry price-jack-ups is perfectly acceptable, however.

To everyone who thinks pirating all the music you want it perfectly acceptable:

FUCK YOU.

Especially Clockworkz, Wrath, and JaCory for being ignorant assholes.

I know a local band that could have easily gone big and made money, but because all the assholes in the world decided to pirate thier album instead of buying it, they ended up without one record deal and actually footing a bill on the recording fees. Saying that pirating music doesn't hurt the artists much isn't true, especially for the lesser name ones.

Colin: There's a difference between a legal means to get away with it and a justification for it. Law is not necessarily moral. If you think this is wrong, then look at people like Hitler and Stalin, and try to say that people who obeyed thier orders are guiltless simply because it was the law.

Yeah. I agree. The RIAA doesn't realize that we are listening to their music. It makes us want to go to the concerts and stuff.

Well, now I guess I and many other Canadians can justify downloading music.

Um...

I download music all the time, but the music I download isn't from a selling artist, it's from a composer who posts them up on the net.

I copy CDs a lot...

Ummm...

I think that iTunes idea is cool...Is that where you pay a small amount of money for a song to be downloaded?

Yea, I think so.

Look at it this way- if they don't make money from you guys listening to their songs, they'll go out of business and you won't get to hear anymore new songs from them. *shrug*

But I'm not much of a music buff, at least not POPULAR music.

She is using an service which you pay an fee for downloading music. Such as iTune.

Intresting idea actually.

And my stance is, hadn't bought an CD with music in my life. All music I download is Game music which I hardly find it CD stores here or just simply non-commercial music.

Wow, are you ever deluded, JaCory. A lot of musicians don't make shit off their albums. The royalty rates are criminally low, and labels expect artists to repay whatever money they advance to the artists. The greedy bastards run the labels.

What do I do? I download stuff I wouldn't buy, even if I couldn't download it, or something I'll buy anyways. Once I buy it, I toss the MP3, assuming it's identical (as in, not a different remix). So long as you do that, I can reconcile my downloading, but don't do it for the wrong reasons.

They don't make shit off their albums? Thats the funniest thing I have heard all damn day. Kid Rock said it best on MuchMusic a few years ago when he was asked he said somthing like this (I can't remember what he said exactly) I've made my millions and if my fans wish to download my music go ahead.

So I completely agree with Jacory, what he said is correct. It's not like it hurts there bank account, what hurts there bank account is the money they waste on shit they will never use.

Hey, asshole, I lost $300 this year on my demo alone. Most musicians don't make money off their music, they do it for love of the music.
