Not with UDP, IIRC. There isn't really a 'constant' connection, you just send packets back and forth. |

Why would you go to the trouble of calling to ask? Just open a dos box and type in "ipconfig /all" (sans quotes) and it will tell you the server address that your computer is using for its dns. |

1: No router. Dad just bought a wireless router (802.11g, I believe) because he wants to leech off of me but it isn't hooked up yet.
2: Lookin' for one now.  It's set to get everything automatically, though, and the only way that I see to set a backup is to set a primary one. |

Ok. Two things.
1: Are you using a router of any kind?
2: This is almost definately a DNS problem. My advice would be to find a public DNS server that's always up and set it as a backup server in your TCP/IP preferences. |

I remember when my old dial-up provider's DNS servers would go down, thus breaking the Internet, ICQ and mIRC would keep working. Sounds like it could be a DNS issue of some kind, though I wouldn't know how to go about resolving it.  |

Most IMs don't actually maintain a constant connection, though. They just send eachother little packets every now and then. Though I don't know about the big ones like AIM and MSN... |

Actually, for all I would guess, if it happens after a certain time and always after a certain time, it may just be that there was a failure renewing the IP address from a router (or the modem itself) ... which would explain why 'ongoing' connections (IM, IRC) would continue and why new ones (internet browsing, e-mail) wouldn't work
Though I have no idea what could really be happening and this is all random speculation, but still... |

If IMs still work, then you're not completely disconnected. What browser/email clients are you using? If they're both based on the same code (IE/Outlook, Mozilla/Thunderbird, etc) they could both have the same problem. Can you ping? (Start -> run -> command -> ping www.google.ca) |

I've had this problem too (connections selectively shutting down until only IM and IRC work, then those two die shortly after)
I used a wireless card and all I had to do was start the 'official' program that came with it, reconnect to the network, and it'd start working again.
Have you tried using XP's 'repair' function? |

I tried powering down and turning back on. Didn't help.
PC... built it myself, processor's an AMD 1.4 GHz Athlon XP, running Windows XP (complete with SP2!). Built-in NIC on the motherboard, an Asus... well, I don't remember. |

You sure it's not you DSL modem the got disconnected as well? Sometimes a DSL modem will say it's connected but it really won't be. I've had this happen quite a few times since I got DSL through SBC last year. Best thing to do is reset/power down the modem and start it up again to see if it works.
At least that's what it's sounding like. Like Tarale said, I don't have many more guesses than the info you provided. |

So I've managed to make the long, hard journey out of the Land of Dial-Up. Got me some DSL (through SBC), and it is good. But there's one tiny problem. When I go to bed, I don't turn my comp off. So sometimes, when I've left my comp on for a while (almost a day straight, usually) I'll have issues. Can't get on the Web, can't get email. But all instant messenger clients will still work. Only way to fix it is to reboot, so I'm sure it's on my end. What could possibly cause this? |
