Yeah...the fight was a good. Steak had about 20% of his HP left at the end.

Steak's a wizard...making his strongest defenses against magickal assault, and his biggest weak point is to straight-physical attack. If you had dummied out the alignment on his weapon, and stuck to using that, you probably would've won this bout. The moment an elemental aligned is introduced...he takes less damage. Steak's heaviest elemental defenses are against Unholy, Holy, Fire, Sonic, and Earth...which, outside of the Battle Arena, he absorbs...of which, he absorbs Unholy and Fire twice over. He's got straight immunity to Air, Ice, Lightning, and Poison, and is resistant to what remains. Status attack, as said before, he's immune to. Grown resistant over the years, and has full immunity provided by his robes. Psionics/psychic abilities is something Steak is completely locked out of...cannot use it, or be affected by it.

FFVIII's spell Aura allows repeated Limit Breaks. It's a good one to carry around...though it's not easy to acquire. It frequently doesn't allow as spectacular a Limit Break as usual (still gave me more than enough time to get off Zell's Different Beat), but it's still there. If it had allowed Seak to use a full-scale Limit Break, he would've used his finisher, Ultima-ga (Fire, Fira, Firaga...Ultima...yeah, it's a doozy).

Steak sees the portal open & close...seeing Ghost's departure.

"Until our next meeting."

Full Cure (since the fight's over....)
Renew Attire

He also pulls something out from his robe...a bottle, and downs it.

Double-Dry Ether (again, since the fight's over....)

He makes a face as he drinks it.

"Ugh...knew I should've gotten the cherry-flavoured one...."

He sees the portal he originally came in through.

"Well...now to pick up where I left off...."

He flies over to it, and steps through...it closing behind him.

I suppose now the thread can be closed....

Just before the spell was cast, Ghost's staffspear made a ringing sound and flashed red a couple times.

Ghost: What?

Instantly Ghost realized what it meant, though he wasn't sure how; it meant he was doomed. Ghost turned to face Steak as the beam shot past him and the explosion covered his line of sight. There was nothing he could do, but take the explosion full-on. He lasted through most of the explosion standing, but after a half minute he fell over lifelessly. The smoke cleared, and he found himself in the middle of a crater, and spotted Steak at the top of it. With his last ounce of breath, he shoved the tip of his blade into the ground, where a blue portal opened, leading into the Netherworld. He rolled through it, and the portal closed after him. Ghost wasn't seen again for a long time...

Also, if Steak didn't want to be troubled to find his way out of this desolate place, the portal he came through was still open.

Aura has worn off.

Steak does what he can to try and dodge the blades...narrowly dodges the first...takes a crossbar to the foot from the second...dodges the third...cloak gets tattered by the fourth...gets slashed across the arm by the fifth...and narrowly dodges the sixth.

Upon landing, Steak hobbles for a bit, holding up the foot that got struck. A simple cantrip seals the wound on his arm. He looks like he's seen better days. A glow flows from his right hand into the ring on his left pinky as he speaks:

"There are several out there at my level...others above me. I am not the greatest there is. That illusion you made...that was Prito-Xess, one of the very best of her kind...the supreme military commander of a people who intend to conquer the known...they are a misery if encountered...they never travel alone...their elites are at my level, while I am one of the best of my kind...I never want to encounter them again...."

Steak stands on his injured foot.

"That wasn't my strongest spell...we're just at my end-game, when I pull out the big guns...I have bigger...."

A red sphere forms about each of his hands...and meld into a single sphere.

"...such as this...."

Looks like a Chinese dragon is moving about the inside of the sphere...ember white in appearance....

"...and then there's my finisher...but from the sounds of things...it may not be needed here...."

And his voice changes:

"Darkness beyond twilight,
Crimson beyond that flows,
Buried in the sea of time
Is where you power grows.
I pledge myself to conquer
All those who stand
Against the mighty gift
In my unworthy hand....
"

Dragonslave (as from the anime series The Slayers. Devastating non-aligned barrier-piercing attack...can [and has] leveled cities in the anime...which means...good luck dodging)

The spell's ray jets towards Ghost...and detonates a bit off to his left. Thoom. Instantly a blast with a twenty foot radius envelops where Steak last saw Ghost...and it's expanding, and putting out wind. Steak stands against the blast winds...and his injured foot gives out. He is sent tumbling backwards away from the blinding and growing hemisphere...hits a sizable tombstone and stops for about ten seconds, before the ground supporting it gives way, and the dark elf goes tumbling some more. He manages to catch himself by using his good foot against the ground while gripping to a tombstone with his right hand, and to the grass with his left. He starts sliding...and the blast dies down. Steak tumble for nearly two miles. He winces as he slowly returns to his feet.

"Ow...damn...that rib always breaks...."

Steak hoists himself into the area, looking at the crater he made...about 3.75 miles across, and 250 ft. deep at the center. Dust is everywhere, settling slowly. In spite this, Steak lazily floats on past an edge of the crater, moving towards the center, looking for Ghost.

Ghost remained out of sight for a long time, making it hard to determine if he had lived through the previous attack or not. The portal tentacle things were not visible either, so his position could not be given away. Nothing stirred for a moment.

Suddenly, the tip of a spear emerged from out of the ground, right below Steak! It drew back into the ground and popped back out nine more times, after which Ghost floated from out of the ground and materialized about 50 feet from Steak. He looked very beat up; his costume was torn everywhere, and the flame that floated behind his head was much smaller than it had been before his disappearance. The energy tentacles were still in sight, and gave him one final charge before withdrawing into their portals and vanishing in a puff of smoke.

Defense up

Ghost gasped for breath.

Ghost: Tell me...are many other fighters as strong as you?

Another portal opened by Ghost, and his shield came out of it! Upon picking it up, he noticed that it lacked a certain glimmer...though he regained it, it could no longer absorb elemental attacks. Nonetheless, he equiped it.

Ghost: Are you compensating for something, by casting that strong of a spell? I'll admit that if I don't finish you off soon, my time will be over.

Ghost: Phantom Blades!

Six floating swords, glowing with a blue tinge, appear in a circle around Ghost. They have no elemental charge, they are just regular swords...that fly. Ghost pointed his staff at Steak, and they all flew at him to attack. Ghost remained in the distance and prepared to fire his familiar spirit beam again.

OOC: Steak's...old. Really old, and really experienced...he has a tendency to teach during a fight, particularly when it's a fellow that seems to be at least decent. That's...just his character.

Magic Jar is...cruel. Takes awhile to prepare...uses a crystal or gem or somethin' like that as the "magic jar," in which you can trap somebody's soul, and control their body. Overly simplified, but the case stands. Soul's out. Same basic effect on the person.

Ripping the soul out of an elf is...fatal. Ol' skoo' D&D says elves don't have souls...malarky if ya' ask me. Elves cannot be revived by AD&D rules (at least, that was the case last time I played). So...yeah...soul out, it's over. The Safety Bit Steak wears as his belt buckle protects against instant death strikes. Another blocking point.

Remember, Steak is a very high ranking wizard...just about everything he's wearing is enchanted in one way or another.

If ya' insist on taking the shield...very well.

The illusion takes form of some very dark skinned woman, definately not an elf or human, dressed in a comfortably (not tight at all) fitting scarlet-red riding jacket, black trousers, black shirt, black riding boots, black leather gloves, and a black beret. Her shiny black hair flows straight, held in a simple ponytail, and hanging to about her shoulder blades. Above the left chest pocket of the jacket are what looks like a ton of military ribbons. The face is...beautiful. Simply an absolutely gorgeous woman (well-stacked even, but not too much)...a bit shrunk, it seems...standing 4' 3". Her ears are notably longer and more accentedly pointed, the top of the ear nearly parrallel to the ground, and both lobes pointing nearly straight backwards. In one hand is a broken-off smaller tree limb that looks like it's been adrift for awhile, coming to a point from the break...glowing like the blue of the Pacific. In her other hand is one-and-a-half handed (given her size) longsword, very dark grey in colour, with a royal purple aura surrounding it. Her eyes are a rich, dark brown. Ghost can see that on her epilets, and also at the front-center of her beret, are a gold crescent moon accompanied by a silver star.

"...Prito-Xess...!!"

Steak, now staring at apparently a very powerful opponent, decides facing one opponent is wiser than fighting two, and decides to strike the weakened one first in hopes of eliminating him before Prito-Xess makes a move. The two inner spheres slam into eachother, accompanied by a bright flash of white.

Ultima (non-aligned undogdable heavy barrier-piercing damage)

As the spell goes off, Steak turns his attentions to Prito-Xess, who dashes and slashes with the wood! Steak tries to dodge, and gets a minor slash on the arm. Steak stops, looking confused.

"I'm not wet...that means...you're not real...."

Steak closes his eyes....

Disbelieve (destroy an illusion)

With a simple cantrip, Steak closes the wound, and hoists himself into the air, looking for where Ghost ran off to.

I wouldn't have considered attacking one's soul a status attack, but if you have that magic jar thinger...
The shield the was my mistake. Don't bother letting it slide.
And Ghost isn't really a fast learner like you seem to be hoping he is . Meh, it's his character.
----

As Steak started his rapid attack, Ghost knew he wouldn't dodge it by going into Ghost Mode alone, so he became transparent and fell beneath the ground for complete cover. He still got hit a few times before he was able to get underground. When he figured the attack was over, he floated back up to the surface and became solid. As Steak was talking, the tentacles around Ghost continued to power Ghost up.

Steak: "Observing your opponent includes who or what he/she/it is, how your opponent reacts to what you do, what affects them, what they do, and what these things entail. Fail to derive an opponent's self, and they will always have the advantage. Are you ready?"

Ghost glanced at the orb in Steak's hand, then held his shield infront of him.

Ghost: Bring it.

Just then, the shield turn into the bluish smoke and faded into the air.

Ghost: Er, um...right...

Now without defense, Ghost attempted to lay down as many moves as he could before Steak unleashed this seemingly powerful spell. He aimed his staff at Steak from a distance.

Ghost: Fear Mirage!

Whatever Steak's worst fear is, whether it's some kind of monster or drowning to death or clowns or even the guy on the oatmeal box, appears as an illusion next to him, and continues to haunt him until he takes the time to deal with it. Then Ghost waited until Steak made to cast his spell, at which point he would stop being solid and slip into the ground again.

OOC: You should've looked at m' profile...Steak is immune to status attack, including magic jar (displacing the soul...named for the AD&D spell magic jar [which would be the most vicious use of the status]).

Also...the spell description of prismatic wall would've annihilated Ghost's shield. I hadn't taken that post down, or editted it...it's still there: "Other objects get destroyed." I'll let this go by this time, but not next time.

Steak openly laughs at Ghost's failed attempt to displace his soul. He draws the rapier, and parries/drawcuts most of the punches, kicks, etc.

"Can't silence me...can't slow me...can't take m' soul...things like this are what you should've noticed already, since I cast no spell that provides status defense...and I do know them."

The dark elf changes stance.

"And the field of yours won't stop two things...one is pre-existing enchantments, such as Aura...."

Limit Break: Swordplay : Pincushion

Steak moves quickly enough it seems there are several of him around Ghost...stabbing from a great many angles in rapid succession...all told, 20 strikes.

"...and the other it won't stop are pre-existing magickal items...such as this."

The ring on Steak's left pinky now has a visible glow to it...blue and green. It flashes quite brightly...as the light fades, the normal sounds start coming back. The field is gone. A small whisp of black smoke rises from the ring.

"That was quite the doozy...I commend you on creating the field."

Steak takes a deep breath, almost like he was starting to get winded, but that wouldn't be an accurate description. Certainly not a sigh of any form, but, a deep breath nonetheless.

"Observing your opponent includes who or what he/she/it is, how your opponent reacts to what you do, what affects them, what they do, and what these things entail. Fail to derive an opponent's self, and they will always have the advantage."

A blue sphere forms in the dark elf's left hand...with two brighter spheres moving about inside of it. His stance of the typical French en guarde. He grins intensely; his voice matches his facial expression.

"Are you ready?"

And now, for something new.
-----

Ghost becomes a spirit again and stops in his tracks right in front of the prismatic wall, then positions himself away from it and becomes solid once more.

Ghost: Ugh. Things aren't going as well as I would desire.

He sees Doomsday and Wrathguard lying on the ground where he was hit with the spell.

Ghost: Doomsday! Wrathguard! Come!

He beckons to the equipment, which respond by turning into blue wisps of smoke and fly back into his hands, where they materialize. The four blue energy tentacles around Ghost continue to power him up, but at a slower rate.

Defense Up
Power Up

Ghost remains silent for a moment, almost subconsciously places his shield against the prismatic wall to gain a bit more magic, and then heads toward Steak again, with the staff end of Doomsday drawn.

OOC: Yeah...I did see that coming. And yeah, my character is getting an honest evaluation of Ghost's attack pattern.

--

Meteors slam everywhere...Steak is struck several times as the dust rises...and settles. Steak is standing where he was...the blue speckles coelesced into a glowing sphere about his left hand. Steak smirks, then brushes some dust off his left shoulder with his right hand.

"You still haven't gotten it...this'll be the death of you if you keep this up...."

Steak draws himself up, lifting off the ground by about 18 inches.

"You must observe your opponent more carefully if you are to complete whatever you've been called back here for."

Steak suddenly flies forward, arcing up, and behind Ghost, as he drew his rapier...his speed was...very fast indeed...quick enough that Steak flew out from behind him, arced back over, and is above & in front of Ghost. A searing pain comes across Ghost's back...Steak performed a drawcut on his pass, but, how did he hit Ghost while non-corporeal? The pain feels as though that part of him is exposed in glaring midday sunlight.

"By the way...are you familiar with a sun sword?"

On the clamshell of Steak's sword...Ghost can see what looks like a sun, with a smaller cross superimposed on it. Steak gives off a golden glow....

"And...are you familiar with the spell Aura? It's a beauty...."

Sorry if this is a bit familiar. It's got to happen to Ghost, when he reaches half HP.
----------

Ghost falls to the ground with a heavy thud and rolls out of the way of any harmfull spell that may have been directed at him, since he didn't know what to expect upon returning out of the orb. He stops short when he hits a low tombstone, then groans in pain.

Just then, about four smaller blue portals open up all around him. As soon as they appear, they launch out some blue energy-tentacle things that attach themselves to Ghost.

Ghost: Wha-? Am I at half HP already?

The tentacles increase Ghost's stats.

Power up
Speed up
Agility up
Magic power up

Boost of speed
Temporary immunity: lightning (for the yellow beams inside the sphere)

Ghost: Ha hah! Your prismatic sphere spell was the final attack that brought me low enough on HP for Netherworld Aid to be triggered. Ah, I feel much more powerful now.

Ghost back flipped his way over to the red tetrahedron.

Ghost: When I attacked this with my physical blade, I did it with the hope of damaging it with its spirit charged tip. It's better, though, that even that didn't work.

Ghost levels his shield and shoves it through the tetrahedron, absorbing all of its magic power and getting rid of the floating shape at the same time. Still under the affect of the speed boost, he casts a powerful spell with this newly acquired magic.

Ghost: Celestial Rage!

Ghost floats in the air and laughs wickedly while the area darkens and blue flames appear all around him. This is done merely for effect. For the real spell, many blue comets, charged with Cosmic, Fire, Light, and Spirit, start plummeting toward the battlefield from the sky. These would damage Ghost as well, but he fades out of his physical form until Celestial Rage ends, which is about half a minute. If Steak had trouble seeing him now, the four tentacles, sprouting from portals that follow Ghost wherever he moves, were still attached, giving away his position.

But you saw that coming.

Time passes. Steak slowly catches his breath, crawling from under the prismatic sphere, and leaning against a tombstone.

"Getting...too old for...this...."

As Steak's breath returns to him, he first seals off any wounds he's taken...cut blood loss. A bit later....

Hastega

And then....

Mighty Guard (as per typical Final Fantasy)

And then....

Aura (as per FFVIII).

Ghost has been stuck in the inside of the prismatic sphere for several minutes now. Steak calmly surverys the scene, judging where soften/torn up ground is, where the prismatic wall and sphere are at. He walks over so that between him and the prismatic wall is the sphere...probably about 15 yards between the two multi-coloured barriers. Steak stands a direct ten yards away from the closest edge of the prismatic sphere, and...

Mordenkainen's disjunction

The prismatic sphere collapses immediately, since all magic within 30 feet of Steak has been disjoined. The energy seeps out into the air, forming speckles all over. As the brightness fades from Ghost's eyes, he can see 40 feet away, with a whole lot of blue sparkles moving towards his left hand.

"Now...where were we?"

Unable to do anything in his cramped position, Ghost sat resentfully and took the damage of the prismatic rays form inside the sphere. Still, he held his shield out, so that when he escaped he would have a fully charged staff...

Steak stops for a moment, confused, watching the swipes pass through the tetrahedron that's been letting him detect Ghost's exact location.

"You're attacking a simple enchantment...with a physical weapon...? Normally people cast dispell magic, but...okay...."

Steak mostly got out of the way of the tombstone...his outfit a bit torn from the old granite. A flicker behind his eyes, and...

Levitate Other

"Playtime's over...!"

Ghost is lifted 15 ft. into the air. Steak jumps up to being on level with him as the opalescence solidifies at the peak.

Prismatic Sphere (9th Lvl Abjuration/Evocation spell from AD&D)

Ghosts sees all the colours of the rainbow swirling and dancing around him, finding himself almost as the exact center of a sphere with a 10-ft. radius. The light is glaring. Gravity pulls Steak back down, slipping through the sphere...his hastega enchantment finally stripped from him, and audibly crashlanding. Outside the sphere, Steak pushes himself up to all fours, breathing heavily, with the prismatic sphere a few feet above him. Solidify Spirit wears off.

"Try and...get your...self out...of that...."

Ah, phew, now it all makes much more sense. Now, as we were.
-----

Ghost gets stuck right in the face with the powerful Holy spell, and immediately goes into a spasm of switching into and out of his ghost form. He staggers over and falls on the ground, right next to a tombstone, where his left arm fades out quickly and goes through it. It materializes again, getting stuck through the stone. Ghost curses at this, and pulls his arm up with the tombstone still through it. As he is thinking of what to do next, he notices the floating tetrahedron and decides to attack it by swiping his blade at it a couple of times, with the hopes of stopping Steak's prismatic spells. He follows this up by swinging his arm quickly and disappearing, launching the tombstone that was stuck in it right at Steak. He pulls out his shield again.

OOC: ;;;;; Never...played it...??? I'm surprised...okay...I suppose I should explain most of these spell then.

Judgement - normally requires summoning Alexander. Casting it otherwise is much more costly in terms of MP. The spell targets multiple enemies, and pops them with a heavy barrier-piercing Holy-aligned attack.

Ra-Tilt - strongest Shaman spell from the anime series The Slayers. It is an attack from the Astral Plane (likely falls under what you describe as Spirit attacks), and from that it is incredibly effective against demons and undead...tends to destroy both on the spot. Does next-to-nothing to things still alive.

Prismatic Spray - from AD&D...7th Evocation. Creates a sizable wedge of intersecting light rays, the colours of the rainbow. There is no dodging this in the area of effect; non-corporeal undead, etc., are struck. Depending on what colour struck will change what happens...it is easily possible to be struck by multiple rays. Red...fire damage, 3 times that to kill a normal person (saving throw for half). Orange...acid damage, 7 times that to kill a normal person (save for half). Yellow...lightning damage, 12 times a normal person (save for half). Green...instant death, save for stark Constitution penalty. Blue...total irrecuperable insanity (save for negate). Indigo...petrification (save for negate). Violet...instant transport to another Plane of Existence (save for negate).

Prismatic Wall - from AD&D...8th Level Evocation. Creates a sizable wall, radiating the colours of the rainbow. Low-level creatures within 20 ft. are blinded for several minutes if they look at it. The caster can pass through the wall un-inhibited, as can things on his/her person...though any magic-based status (i.e., slow, haste, barrier, auto-life, etc.) are stripped off. Other objects get destroyed immediately. A magic disjoining spell (very rare...very high level magic...I only know of one from all I've come across) can bring down the wall instantly, as can a rod of cancelation (which will also destroy the rod), though anti-magic fields cannot penetrate it. Bringing down the wall otherwise must be done colour-by-colour, in consecutive order, by hitting the wall with the proper spell. A creature or whatever touching the wall (this includes non-corporeal undead, etc.) inflicts the effects of all the colours still active, just like taking the rays from a prismatic spray. Until the violet layer (the bottom-most layer) is down, no attack (save those that can strike gods) can pass through the wall in either direction. There is a specialized version of this spell at 9th Lvl., Abjuration/Evocation. NOTE: Steak never struck Ghost with this...just used it as a defense.

Steak takes a hit...and another...and another...and loses his temper....

"You should've been destroyed...you are the only non-living thing, or creature tied to a different plane, that wasn't destroyed by a Ra-Tilt...."

The charge about his hands turns to a spheric charge about his person...clearly not in great shape...but also clearly ready to using the big guns, so to speak. The red tetrahedron still rotates about. The charge, it seems, has a bit of pull to it....

"Go ahead...I know you can't dodge the first...which'll force you back into corporeal form...and at this close of range..."

Solidify Spirit (nearby non-corporeal undead become corporeal briefly...that would include Ghost's "transparent" form)

"...it ends."

The glow about Steak turns...pearly...as Ghost returns to the physical, facing Steak's outstretched hand an inch from his face...the power seems to focus at that point. At the moment of Ghost becoming physical....

Judgement (as per the FFVII summoning of Alexander...except, the spell originating from Steak's hand).

The spherical aura begins turning opalescent....

Ghost becomes transparent and floats out of the way of Steak, then quickly materializes and shoves his spear at him. Right afterward, he becomes transparent again, flies through him, and swings his blade once more. He continues reappearing and attacking Steak at random angles at a shockingly fast speed until stopped by an attack.

After this, though, he's a bit drained...

"Yipe...!!"

Steak is struck...and rolls out of the way...hand aglow with a familiar opalescence....

Prismatic Wall (as per the 8th Lvl Evocation Spell from AD&D)

Steak examines himself briefly. His aggrivation is clear, even through a Prismatic Wall.

"Enough...should've done this sooner...."

His voice changes, as he leaps above the *very* tall wall...seeming to hang some as he descends at Ghost....

"Everlasting flame of blue...let the power hidden in my soul be called forth here from the infinite...."

Ra-Tilt (as per spell from the anime series The Slayers. Note this isn't fire-aligned)

The dark elf lands, blue semi-transparent spheres about the size of softballs enveloping his hands...a condensed magick power...clearly preparing his next volley, in case that wasn't enough.

Ghost was shocked and confused to find that Steak's spell actually connected with him. It would take a spell of pure, raw energy to hit him in this form, and those are hard to come by, since they usually take the unpure form of light or fire and such. As unlikely as it was, he was hit, and just as it happened he reappeared in a puff of flame and fell to the ground. From here to took a few steps away from
Steak.

Ghost: I'm going to have to try harder than this if I hope to hit you.

He flipped Doomsday around to the staff side again, and rubbed it. It would no longer deal fire damage, just spirit.

Ghost: You may be able to block a fire spell, but spirit spells are different, since they go through all defenses. I believe only energy spells can counter them, but since energy is usually spent for offense instead of defense, blocking this would be very unlikely.

Ghost hung up his shield and gripped Doomsday with his left hand, and it started shooting a huge jet of blue, spirit charged stuff. The beam was about two feet in diameter, and traveled until it hit something, which usually just disappeared after that. He countinued shooting this beam for about ten seconds, following Steak with it the whole time, so if Steak were to move, Ghost would still be firing at him.
