Gotta hide that thing where nobody's gonna look. The only reason I found it was 'cuz I went around, killing lots of every monster I came across, trying to get ahold of all the rare drops. Those Merman will *not* give up their monster vials easily, I can tell ya' that.

SotN was easily my fav...I think it was called Dracula X in Japan; I derive that from a friend's official CD of the soundtrack.

The N64 Castlevania games rule. There, it's been said. Better 3D Castlevanias than Lament of Innocence, to be honest.

On the subject of Castlevania 64 - I didn't enjoy it and quit playing it after I couldn't get past the dogs and the Frankenstein monster in the garden maze. I'd enjoyed the earlier part of that chapter because it was more about exploration than smashing things and jumping (more on that later), but overall, it had too many elements that punish the player needlessly, which really yanked my chain.

First off, there's not much of a safety net, even in the very beginning, which I think is ridiculous. Unless you're playing on hard mode or something, the first level of a game should be easy, friendly, and pretty much impossible to screw up. Not so in C64, where you face a boss and endless hordes of enemies with neither a damn clue as to what you're supposed to be doing, a map, nor a renewable source of healing, which gives you little incentive to explore lest you get cornholed and die and have to start it all over again. And let's not forget the cliffs with the crappy camera angles that make it easy to fall to your doom. Thus, I did not start the game off on the best of terms.

Further into the game, you start to get access to a store of sorts that allows you to buy healing items! w00t! They fixed one of the earlier problems I was complaining about, right? Not exactly. You see, if you spend too much money over the course of the game, you have to fight another boss. Evidently, the devil hates getting a lot of bling, so he takes your soul. I thought that money was the root of all evil, so wouldn't you think that a demon would LIKE to have a lot of it? Can we say "cheapass device to artificially limit spending"? And you also have to fight another boss if you take too much time to get through the game. Discouraging exploration and experimentation is teh sux. I never understand why developers do that.

I can't really vote only have playing a few .. but from what I've heard, Symphony of the Night is one of the best out there. (Also extremely expensive)

But one I have played that I really liked was Super Castlevania 4 for Snes.

A lot of people rant agains't Castlevania 64 saying it's horrible, maybe it's because I haven't played more than 3 or 4 Castlevania games, but I didn't think the 64 one was bad either.

Either way, I still think Castlevania Symphony of the Night is the best one out there. And I'm highly loyal to the series!

Bah, I knew I forgot one.

Mine has to be the first GBA release of Castlevania in the UK... I think it's circle of the moon... But not sure... The whole title wasn't printed on the UK version... I'll cast my vote when I find out which one it is...

I said Circle of the Moon. I don't know why, but I just like it better than the rest for some reason.

The one I've played and adored the most over the years is Castlevania IV, so, I voted for that.

The Duplicator + Power of Sire combo is more deadly.

Rydain, I'll never forget when I first got a Schmoo (is that what it was called?) to drop a Crissaegrim. I equipped it, attacked, and nearly pissed my pants. After that, the game was pretty much over becuase nothing left was challenging anymore.

What I found funny about it was the fact you get it off such a weak/lame ass enemy. What they SHOULD have done was created an optional boss. A very difficult one to beat and have the Crissaegrim be the reward.

Oh, and one of the cool things about this game is getting an ungodly amount of map % by using the double heart refresh trick. Konami gave this game more replay value than they had originally intended.
