BMF is as knowledgeable as always, I see.

Mikeyk had squishable goombas.

I would delete the wings altogether. Then when you hit the goomba, it just disappears, and the paragoombas and paratroops would just be jumping around or floating. It would be cool, you could call them pogogoombas and pogotroopas.

Actually, it was programmed in, as the prototype tiles from the SNES Test ROM show:

The squished Goomba tile on the left (proto) resided in the area now occupied by the wing on the right (final). Seems the SMW designers rearranged a lot of graphics, but often left the code intact...

In MarioWorldReconfigurer, change the 'poof of smoke' option to 'fall straight down' and make it fall straight down when you jump on it. It isn't strictly squishable like real Goombas, but it should do. That, and you can always give a shelless koopa goomba ExGfx... Meh, I suppose I don't have a solid solution here. But those are good alternatives.

So yeah, you're really gonna have to limit yourself and make skillful use of ExGFX to make it work, unless you want to spend quite awhile on this for results that may hurt you more in the end.

Well, I did a quick test and got a bad result. The stomped goomba graphics aren't stored in the normal sprite graphics table, which means that someone has to try to change the thousands of C7s in the Rom one by one and hope that one of them works.

Hmmm. So it does. Well, there you go. You'd have to ExGFX it in whenever you wanted to use the stompable goomba, or else it'd screw up whenever you used a paratroopas. Also, you won't be able to use paragoombas. "Meh."

The stomped goomba shares GFX with the wing of a paragoomba or paratroopa.

Yep. There aren't any tiles of goombas getting stomped, so they load the wrong tile. It should be fixed if you make one and save it to the proper place - while this will almost certainly screw up what actually goes there, some sacrifices must be made. It's probably in GFX01, though I don't know which tile, exactly.

You may want to look in GFX00.bin and look which GFX it could be.

I made goombas stompable with mario reconfigurator, and this happens when I stomp on it:
