I only have my ears pierced (though I don't wear earrings very often because I'm lazy) and I'm not interested in having anything else pierced because it's just not me, but I do not consider others' safe and responsibly done body modifications to be "barbaric" or "mutilation". Though I may not personally wish to pierce my eyebrow, navel, lip, or whatnot, I don't see what the damn big deal is as long as people are responsible about it, having their work done in a sanitary environment by a piercer who knows what they're doing and then keeping the piercing clean while it heals. Their body, their sense of aesthetics, their business. |

I don't believe in bodily mutilation. You will never see me pierce anything, or get a tattoo either. I'm sick of seeing all the wannabe punk rockers in my school with, like, every body part pierced. |

I know someone who does that too. She carves her boyfriend's name into her wrist because it looks "cool" and makes her look like she's "devoted" to him. It makes me sick to think that he almost encourages this for her to do. |

Most of them don't do it for looks. They do it for a release. Because they need to control something in their lives.
I'm just going to shut up, because it's entirely possible you DO know someone who does it for looks. But cutters that I know do it because of issues, or less likely because they're attention whores.
I know someone who cuts herself in intricate patterns because it "looks pretty".

People with a lot of piercings (like a dozen+ on just the face) looks bad, but a few or just one can look good. I think its up to the individual. I recently pierced my own eyebrow but I don't have anything to put it in yet...  |

Piercings freak me out a little bit. I have my ears pierced, but I never wear my earrings. I wouldnt dream of getting any other piercings either. I dont find them attractive much at all, and the only purpose I see is defiance. Kids under 18 get them just to spit in their parents' face, and I hate that.
As for cutting.. that's much worse. But like windwaker said, it's all opinion. |

In certain cases it can be nice, althought piercings on a belly button is pretty icky for me... especially when you seen one infected. -.-;
But it's up to the people themself right? And as long it dosen't hurt the body I see no reason why not... althought I wouldn't pierce myself. |

I'm not one to dictate what others should/shouldn't do, so I don't have a problem with any of this being done.
Piercings don't really disgust me, and I wouldn't judge someone based on it. There's worse stuff on the internet.
Really, unless you want to dictate who/how piercings can be done, this really isn't a debate thread. |

I think there is a limit.... too many is rather disgusting.... but done properly can be very attractive....
I personally haven't pierced anything... but tha'ts only cause I'm a wuss  |

Self-expression. Not only has it been a cultural staple of humans for eons, it is also an excellent way for many to get in touch with spirituality. Piercings and other forms of self-modification have their limits, as I have seen some people go overboard, but generally it is a really beautiful art. |
