Yep! I did that effect to my old-school Mario for Master Mario World. (Master Mario's pixelated when he's not big.....)

This (assuming you like being lazy as much as the next dude) is how to make a good running sprite for your edited Mario:
Detach the legs. Make them look like they are doing the splits, yet not all the way, making SURE you have your legs detached (seperate from body) Make the next sprite (assuming it's small Mario) with three legs! NO JOKE! C'mon! I dare ya! Make the leges side to side all the way, and add a third leg (not sick joke attended) in the middle. That way, it'll look like its running as if from a cartoon! (kinda like Bandit)
