Despite (Or maybe because?) SMB is a pretty early NES game, the music format is pretty complicated. Using Necrosaro's documentation, I still could never produce changes with any degree of stability (And I've hacked quite a few NES games' music in my day).

Though I'm not sure if the documentation for it is online anywhere, SMB2 or even 3 would probably be much better candidates for an intro to music hacking. You're likely going to get so frustrated with SMB1 that you'll just give up on the idea altogether.

You're going to have to use a hex editor, no question about that. A music editor for a game is entirely possible, but due to the general crap you have to deal with in music hacking I've never seen one made.

Also, do you know anything about music? Play an instrument, or even better, have a grasp of music theory? If the answer is no, combine that with SMB1's format difficulty and you're facing a severely uphill task, to say the least.

Don't let what I'm saying discourage you, as hacking NES music is quite possible; it's just you're picking a very bad game to hack if you know little to nothing about either music itself or hex.

Good luck with whatever project you're doing this for.

Or use the old Copy & Paste trick to bypass the referer problem. There may even be a referer-hide kind of extention for FireFox, which would really come in handy for these silly damn things.

It's there, the error is actually 403 (stupid host). Refresh at the error page and it should show up.

Thank you. And make that "a whole lot of good luck".

Mechakoopa, before you ask...

NO

There is no such thing as a MIDI to SMB1 converter.

Unless Bouche's been doing things behind our backs again.

I guess it's not working because that site doesn't allow offsite linking to it's files You have to go to romhacking.net, click "Game Specific" under the Documents heading, and then look for "Super Mario Bros. 1 Music Data Documentation" then click that link

I'd have to say Kawa's right about needing to use a hex editor to modify the music, as if there was a program available to edit it, I'm sure the author of that file would've included a link to it Good luck with the editing

Hex editor, I'd guess. Hard to tell, cos the file Para linked is 404.

Next time anyone asks how to hack NES music without specifying the game they are inquiring about, link them directly to this: http://www.romhacking.com/docs/gamespec/nes/smbmusic.txt. It appears that 100% of these requests are looking for this specific information. (Two for two, in the past few weeks.)

If you specify a game, I may be able to help you out.

No programs, because it's pretty much game specific. Depending on what game you are hacking, there may be a few documents, but you will have to use a hex editor. What game are you hacking?
