To put this thread in another way, do you prefer the book or the TV show? Seriously... :{

Although I lately saw "Last Exile" and was really impressed of such powerful pictures in motion, I read more manga than watching anime.

I don't have that much experience in manga (owning 100 of these smaller books at home) I'm currently really adored of Ryu Fujisaki's "Houshin Engi", which is quite interesting.
On the other side movies like "Spirited Away" from Hayao Miyazaki are very good and simply have that atmosphere you maybe cannot achieve that strong, if put into a book.

As a general rule, for most series, the one that came first is usually better.

It's a bump...but I'll let this one slide because I'd rather add something here.

I prefer manga, but that doesn't mean anime is that bad. Manga drawings are more artistic and are nicer to watch. Mostly anime got too many fillers what are quite boring, but anime has it's advantages too, like sound & color. But I still stick at manga. ^^ (Manga has a smaller filesize too! xD)

For a nice example of a manga they converted from good to crap, check out (but don't waste money on) Tenjou Tenge. Some manga is really nice compared to the anime, some manga is really nice because it continues the anime (GIVEMEGETBACKERSNOW ) and some anime is better than the manga. I usually prefer watching the anime (for the music, the voices and stuff) and then reading the manga if I have to (like how you HAVE TO read the ippo manga after watching Hajime no Ippo ;D, however, without the anime music on while reading the manga, it loses a lot of the feeling). End line being that combining the two = wins.

I don't see the point in this discussion. Obviously, sometimes the anime is better than the manga. And other times, it's vice versa. And one main thing that will keep this balance is that most of the time, there are things that one has that the other doesn't and vice versa. 'nuff said. And that's the last time I'm using vice versa TWICE in a post.

I'll go with manga. Mostly for the reason that it can be accquired reletively easily and cheaply, in relation to Anime DVDs. I was almost going to get a Samurai Champloo DVD the other day, until I saw the price tag.

Plus, it's an easy way to follow a series you like on the go, assuming you don't have a portable DVD player.

Even released stuff? You sure?

I've just heard they translate things and sometimes change names of things, but then again I guess it would kind of make sense to change a Japanese technique into an american named thing ... but, usually it sounds horrible.

Ex: Naruto -
Kage Bushin to Doppleganger Attack

That's what's discouraged me to buy any manga, so far. I'm just afraid of getting a cut down version of what the manga really is.

But I'm probably just being picky.

But honestly, I'd rather watch it, so my votes for anime.

The upside to manga though is you can get through it quickly. Like when I read, mainly all of Naruto in a week to catch up with my friends.

Lately? Manga, hands down. Much better character development and story most of the time.

Anime but I like to read manga too. It's just seeing it is sometimes better than reading it. Even though, there are differences in both cases from one switch to another.

I've only read a few mangas, and I like them, but I'd rather see it rather than read it.
