Alright. I'd like to start out by saying that in most cases, I'll be the last person in a group to recommend going to see a movie in theatres. It's far too expensive for my tastes, and the movies themselves generally suck so terribly that I'd rather stay at home.

When I found out that they were making a movie based on Hellblazer, I was interested. Not that I read very much at all of the books, but I knew about enough to see potential. The more I saw of the trailers, the more interested I got. Finally, I went to see it yesterday. I was not at all dissapointed.

The cast was great, and the story was not too bad at all. Of course, it was along the same lines as several other familliar plots, but it did a fairly good job of avoiding cheesiness.

My biggest fear was that Keanu's acting was going to be poor in some way, but I was pleasantly surprised there, too! He managed to have only very few instances of monosyllabism, and usually contributed a lot to what was happening. He pulled John off quite well (based on what little I know about the series), despite the obvious lack of blonde Brit.

I've heard about some critics having dumped on the funny parts, but I thought a lot of the movie was surprisingly funny and/or cute.

I also have a bit of a thing for divinity and gender ambiguity in characters, which may or may not have had a hand in Gabriel being pretty much my favorite character. There's one thing (s)he says near the end... well, I try not to spoil anything, but I'll just say it was funny. IMHO.

Altogether, I'll give it an 8.5 after taking into account that it was the first movie I went out to in ages that I actually enjoyed enough to make it worth what I payed.

Anyone else have any thoughts?
