Boot into safe mode and delete update.exe, or run msconfig (Start => Run => msconfig), uncheck update.exe from startup and delete the file itself. |

It should just delete everything, then copy a backup of all the files your computer came with, so it'll be just like when you bought it. (So it'd be a good idea to back up whatever you want to keep on CD-RW or some such thing.) |

Go to www.pcpitstop.com they have a free virus scanner that should remove it, or download the free AVG. That's the one I'm using. |

Any ideas how you got it? It doesn't sound like any of these infect other files, but it could be some other virus too.
You should be able to delete these files using a boot disk (Win95/98/ME) or the Recovery Console in a WinXP install CD (Win2K/NT/XP). If it shows up again though (and you know you didn't re-infect yourself), reformatting and reinstalling would be a damn good idea. |

The first effective way when having a trojan is *sigh* a full reinstallation of windows, since it is possible to have spread out other trojans and backdoors as well.
If you have the time to run your (slowed down) CD/DVD writer, backup the most important stuff on there (just make sure the virus is not in these files), format the harddisk, reinstall and copy the stuff back.
Then immediately get another browser than IE, personal firewall, an always (!) up-to-date virus scanners and scan at least once a week your system fully for viruses  |

There is no essential file with the name WINDOWS/UPDATE.exe in the Windows folder at all, try to delete it yourself. If you can't get into Safe mode/DOS and try delete it from there. (for entering safe mode keep pressing F8 just before windows start. And then select safe mode there)
Recovery CDs are easy to use, insert the disc and restart the computer. If it dosen't happen anything, then you should rearrange the boot order in the BIOS.  |

I have a trojan virus is what my virus dectection system keeps telling me but it says it cannot be removed. It shows that its in WINDOWS/UPDATE.exe . I think that its slowing my computer down alot but I dont know how to get rid of it! Can anyone help me out?
Also I have recovery Cds and want to refresh my computer so its like when I first bought it can anyone help ME PLEASE! |
