Well the thing about the branches is that if I have solid tiles above the ground they have to be 4x4. Due to the fact that Grant jumps a body length higher than the original Castlevania he jumps right through solid blocks. If he goes through an 8x8 he gets stuck in the middle. The easiest way I found to solve that problem is to have 4x4 solid tiles above ground and 8x8 for the ground itself. I did take the advice of making shadowy trees in the background, which makes it look a lot better, but I'm keeping the giant leaves, because huge leaves are creepy?

Looks pretty good, but some pointers:

- Those branches look kinda flimsy and repetitive. Either make them thicker or have another tile set aside for them. I'm sure there's got to be leftover "solid" tiles in the level, since level one has like 9 or so (not including the door tiles).

- Those leaves are huge, especially when compared to the branches. They're nice-looking, but they're about the same size as Grant. Dunno if this is what you're aiming for in the first place, but I'd just like to point them out, since they stand out quite a bit.

- Fill in the background a bit more. Have some trees in the distance, or possible some shrubbery (if you can make a good distinction between the plants and the green ground).

haha, it's cool Bit-Blade, I respect your feedback for the graphics. You're a very talented gfx editor so anything you say is pretty important to me in that field.

Creepy. Could use some shadowy trees in the background, though. All that black makes it look a tad boring. The tree tops look a little monotonous the way they are repeated, you may want to try to either do different leaves or add a few more leaf tiles to that so it doesn't look so much the same.

I like what I'm seeing. It kind of reminds me of DxEdges work (with the ground). You could do a better job of shading your trees (unless there's a reason for such an abrupt break). You did an excellent job with the roots of the tree.

There is something very ghosts and goblins'y about this level and I like it. It was a creepy ass game. If you like I can give you some of my castlevania graphics I've never used or don't plan on using.

EDIT: One more thing. Please don't get defensive about my posts. I don't mean them to disparage your work in any way. If I didn't care about your work I wouldn't bother saying anything at all. But I've developed a habit of being blunt when it comes to criticism, so... don't take my posts personally. I'm just voicing my own opinions on what I both like and dislike about your work, and what I think would look better and what wouldn't. And if this is me just being overly analytical about things then.... bury it.

Level 1 is finished. There's a bug that I can't figure out though that involves collecting items. Whenever I pick up money or invisibility potion and any other item while the sound from the first item is playing the sword's gfx gets all glitchy or disappears all together. It might have something to do with the game genie code I'm using though...

Here's some screens of the level:

I can't even begin to understand your logic -- but whatever.

I'd comment on the hack but it doesn't look like there's much to comment on yet.

Yes it is inspired by "The Gates" in New York.
The graphics do like really good. Too bad I never really played Castlevania games before. But I think you should take this hack further. I know you can do it.

The game will always exist as it is, Doc. Do you have any idea how difficult it would be to destroy every single digitial incarnation of castlevania 3, let alone the physical ones?

Don't think of it as 'tarnishing' something. There's no way you would even come close to making a dent in the enormous entity that is castlevania 3. For instance, if you are going to hack something, you back up the original, right? Boom. No harm done. The only thing you are doing is editing the game to be what you wish. There is nothing you can do is alter the Castlevania 3 that already exists. It's legacy protects it. Screwing around with a copy of its engine (a copy of a copy of a copy) doesn't really matter all that much in the long run. In short, I think having a 'game is too perfect to hack' is a foolish philosophy to live by as a romhacker.

Now, as for your other ideas. Be careful with the jump data. Simon can jump through solid floor if he jumps too high in the castlevania rom. You are going to have a hard time changing around the mechanics of the game but with a little help I'm sure you can do it.

To the critics I say, thank for the comments, someone needs to step up and do the job. But don't expect me not to defend myself in return. The lack of climbing walls may lose some of the experience as playing as Grant, but that's where new Castlevania gameplay conventions are going to come into play. The ability to throw knives at will, no matter what weapon you have, and if I can track down the data (and hopefully get it to work in the PRG 1 rom) he will be more agile than ever. The problem with hacking CV3 is that I refuse to. It's too good of a game to alter, with the exception of a pallete switch for a couple of levels, that game is a work of art. I don't want to taint what has already been perfected.

I second that it's gonna feel 'strange' to play as Grant in cv1. I mean, ReVamp can do almost everything that Stake can, it's just a little bit slow :p

Googie Thank you for giving that link to The Gates, now I have a full understanding why Dr. Mario was inspired to make the graphics the way he did with The Gates.

I kind of think it's a bad idea to do a castlevania 1 hack with Grant Denasty as the star. That would be MUCH more effectice with castlevania 3. This only looks something like grant, but you can't actually stab people with a dagger, be short, and climb up walls and cielings. Kind of takes the fun away from the theme of it, y'know?

In short, good level ideas, bad character ones for the game it's a hack of.

Here's some info about The Gates in Central Park. It's an event that's going on in Central Park for a couple of weeks.

Hold on a minute, I was born in New York and have no idea where "The Gates" are!

To me those banners look like what they hang off the street signs on Marathon Sunday, with the Big Apple logo and "23 Miles", etc.

And those branches are looking great!

Here's an updated look at the forest, and yes, you can walk on those branches. There are going to be parts that rely on it.

Looking spiffy!

What are those mountain-like things behind the trees? Maybe you could make them into piles of leaves blown off by the dark winds that are eternally surrounding the castle of Orlox. Or something like that.
