I'm taking a break from the levels for now, and doing more work on the game's features. Somebody asked me if there will be ASM hacks. The answer is yes. Before I do anymore level editing, I'm going to start implementing a lot of ASM features. Two of my priorities right now are completely redesigning Mario. Inspired by Resident Evil 5's Chris Redfield, Mario is now more slim, and has bigger muscles, and loses the hat. I'm removing the hat on all the sprites. No more hat!

One of the things I really want to do is implement new moves for Mario. One of them I have been meaning to do, is the Multi-Directional Fireball Throwing. That might be a little too difficult to do, even though I have the pseudo-code down and everything. I want to do something a little more simple. I want to add a Punch ability.

You press Up + the run button to do a punch.

The punch ability would be great, because you won't need a powerup to launch an attack. And small Mario won't be able to punch.

LDA $17
AND #$48 (Up + Run button)
Swap Free bank in
Swap new sprite bank with Mario punch
Collission detection stuff - If Mario touches something blah blah blah
Return to former bank.

I won't make any promises, but I'm going to at least try to implement it. Wish me luck!

EDIT -

I put those fire canisters in btw. I'm holding back from showing more levels. You will see more levels and graphics overhauls in the next trailer.

Haha. Too old huh? How about this one?

I want something new. But I don't want something that is going to look corny. I think this one resembles Chris Redfield a lot more. What do you think about this one?

If Mario looks like crap, I can always change him back. No big deal. I'm experimenting to see what might work, and what won't.

Edea: I appreciate the idea, but I'm not going to take that route.

pieguy1372: Thanks.

Trax: Not necessarily. You can swap a bank anywhere, providing that you properly write the code. If you swap, you need to swap back perfectly, and to the right spot. When Mario shoots the fireballs, a different bank is swapped in temporarily, and then the original bank is loaded back in. It happens so fast that you won't even realize it happens without snapping the debugger to see it.

smkdan: Nice editor there man. I never really got into Nuts & Milk, but I have seen a lot of hacks of it that look pretty cool, and its nice to see another editor in the works. Good luck with that.

never-obsolete: There are a lot of Castlevania fans that are going to love that!

Also, "Captain Mario"... sure a steep carreer for somebody who supposedly started off plumbing Brooklyn toilets.

The only reason he is a captain now is because he sucked as a plumber. He screwed up at work and the toilet overflowed.

Insectduel: Good luck with that. I like what I see in YY-CHR.

Kawa: Cool man. I wish more people posted Pokémon hack videos.

Googie: Nice. Those 8-bit graphics give you those nostalgia feelings. I like it. I never played the original Nuts and Milk before. I might have to give it a shot.

I bought NSMB to hope to get some inspiration for my hack. Some of the levels in the game are pretty good. The game is kinda easy though... And probably the reason I bought MMZXA, is because it looks cool, and it has an 8-bit Megaman-style mini-game.

I was kinda surprised that Capcom put an 8-bit mini-game in. 8-bit kicks so much more ass than all of this other crap, in my opinion.

I was wondering if anyone can post some links, or offer some tips and advice on how to draw NES graphics. Anything, from videos, to tutorials, from their own personal experience. I found a couple of links which I'll be looking at later.

http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pixelart/Creating_Pixel_Art_Painting_Pixel_by_Pixel_Tips_and_Tutorials.htm

http://www.petesqbsite.com/sections/tutorials/tuts/tsugumo/faq.htm#q1

I found a cool video of somebody drawing an 8-bit Solid Snake, from MGS4.

Drawing 8-Bit Solid Snake (MGS4)

I'm admitting this. My graphics in SMB3 suck. Especially after looking at the Mario's Destiny trailer. I know how to draw on paper, but I need to learn how to do pixel art. Is there any good documents that I'm overlooking?

I wonder why they haven't done a MMORPG yet, in full 3D... I can actually see that working... And I mean for the original games, Red and Blue. You choose a starter Pokémon, and explore a massive world, get into adventures, and collect Pokémon wherever you go. Trade with people, have converations through the keyboard, there is a lot of potential there if they did.

This is an ASM hack I did for SMB3, which was done for practice. The main purpose of this ASM hack was to implement the use of the select button, since it isn't really used in the game, except on the title screen. If you press select anytime during the game, Mario dies. Here is a video showing you.

If you want this in your hack, here is what you have to change:

0x10c40

20 13 E9 EA EA EA

0x3e923

A5 18 29 20 C9 20 D0 03 4C 7C DA A5 18 29 80 85 00 60

I would like to thank Panophobia for giving me some advice on how to deal with the controls. Thanks man.

Maybe some of you SMB3 hackers would be interested in having this in your hacks, so thats why I'm posting it in a new thread for people to see clearly. Have fun!

Thanks guys. I was just excited that I was able to do it. If you know ASM, you can change the code for the select button to have it to do other things as well. By the way, infidelity, how is your hack coming along?

I was finally able to display a sprite on the screen, in the upper-left corner. Another practice attempt. It's that micro-goomba sprite. I can put anything there though, and it will stay when the screen scrolls.

Very nice work there Panophobia. That must have taken some time to do all of that. And I loved the Toxic Burst weapon from MMX3. That was awesome. So was the Clone Sword. All of them were very good. Well done.

Cool. Years ago, when I did Mega Man hacking, I always wanted to fill in the gaps that Capcom never did. What happened to the original Mega Man generation before the X series? I never completed any of my hacks, so maybe you could take that story and do something with it. Good luck.

I don't remember who told me this, but it sounded pretty legit, especially based on small clues throughout the series. But, maybe you can use this.

Dr. Wily was the one who created Zero, to try to destroy Mega Man. Hence, Zero was a bad robot (a maverick). Zero winds up being successful. He kills Mega Man. What helps support this story element, is the scenes in Mega Man X4. Zero has a dream with Dr. Wily in it. And they even have a scene somewhere, where Zero is shown as a Maverick. So, it sounds right. After Zero kills Mega Man, he disappears, and is not seen until the X series. And of course, Dr. Light eventually creates Mega Man X.

So, maybe you could have the final boss be Zero, and have him kill off Mega Man, and shown some scene of Mega Man X being created. That would be a totally awesome way to end your game. With Mega Man dying, and X being born. Of course, I'm not telling you what to do with your hack, just giving you some ideas. But that's what I would do though.

EDIT -

You can even use the 8-bit Megaman X sprites, from MMXtreme 1 & 2.

I've been wanting to show off more of Dark Mario (Super Mario Bros. 3 hack), but I can't until I'm ready. There is still a lot of work that I need to do, but when the time comes, you will not be disappointed in the next trailer.

What I can say, without showing anything, is that the graphics have gotten a complete overhaul, redesigned from the ground up. And they are much better looking, and of higher quality. Level designs are awesome. One of the levels so far has multiple paths you can take to reach the end of it. Oh, and you'll no longer be taking Goal Cards to end the level. I'm using the Goal Card system for something else...

Now, for this new ASM feature. It's an idea I'm thinking of doing, but I need some opinions. I already have a couple of more features that I'm still working on (they will be revealed in the next trailer), but this new thing is called the...

Realistic Life System

Basically, I take out the lives concept. And give Mario an EKG. Similar to Resident Evil, the more Mario gets hurt, the more the EKG turns to Danger status.

RAM Address:

5 = Perfect Health
4 = Fine
3 = Okay
2 = Caution
1 = Danger
0 = DEAD

Once you are dead, the game is over. The lives system is history, but you have health units. At one of the health units, probably 1, you will turn to small Mario. If you get hit then, you are finished. Oh, and when you die, it will say, "YOU DIED". I even thought about adding blood to the game, but I don't know if I want to do that yet. I have the addresses I need to add blood.

Now, what does this mean? You need to be extra careful with what you do. And I'm telling you right now, this game is hard. I've been testing my levels, and they are good designs. Basically, if you plan on rushing through the levels, you will die. Plain and simple. But if you take your time, you should be okay.

There will be things that can be used to replenish your health units. The only problem I see, is the lava for example. But I won't worry about it too much. Just means you have to be careful. There is a new ASM feature, which I'm halfway done with, which I don't want to reveal, because I might use it in the actual game. I will give you a hint about it though, its a new weapon for Mario.

Dark Mario is shaping up nicely. But who knows when I'll be ready to show off something. I don't think I'll be ready for at least a few weeks.

So, the Realistic Life System, good idea or bad idea?

Oh right. I watched your video again, and now I remember what I wanted to mention. I think you should get rid of the W on the kuribo shoe. In my opinion, I don't like it. Getting rid of the W would make the kuribo shoe stand out better. For some reason, it doesn't look right on there. We already know he works for Wily.

Oh, and I will respond to your PM later.

The list was long enough. I didn't want to make it insanely huge. That's why I made the Other category.

Capcom should really make a Mega Man Soccer DS. The game is several years old now, and is due for a port to bring it back to awareness, and it would be perfect for the DS, because you could use the stylus, and the second screen could show you the boss select screen, or stats, or whatever. And Capcom would make money. I for one, would buy it. Too bad, chances of that happening are probably slim.
