A very fun but hard game. Death is permament, and levels are like nethack randomly generated. Shops amusingly works like the ones in Nethack, with as angry shopkeepers. (It also reminds me little about cave story, graphically at least.)

I killed two damsels so far with rolling boulders. I need to be more careful before picking up those idols.

And yes the shopkeepers are killable, but like in Nethack they are hard. Plus all future shopkeepers are angry at you and will try to kill you if you manage to kill a shopkeeper from a earlier level.

I like the dialog system used in later games such as TF2 or L4D. L4D even pulls of some small conversations between the charcthers after a certain event had happened, and there's enough variations of it.

...with the exception of the "I hate vans" line Francis always seem to mutter on the fifth stage of Death toll.

It depends on the situation though, I help if I'm able to but if I don't have the equipment... I can't really do anything.

Thankfully most old people I came across weren't grumpy at all. In worst case they're just a little bit strange.

The commandline in Windows can more or less "simulate" DOS for the old programs and games, but unfortunately some modern video hardware doesn't gracefully work under Windows while using old DOS programs.

...and Dosbox is more nice to use in a multi-tasking system since the DOS program won't take up the whole screen (unless you want it to of course).

You can "purchase a kiss" from a damsel, increasing your HP by one.

You also get 1+ HP if you bring a damsel to a level exit, then finish the level. So buying the damsel is pointless, Unless you really want to use an altar...

Without having actually looked into it - I find the explanation that Norton tried to get their hands on some statistical data about customers' OS/patches/internet connection/whatever without asking and performed clumsily quite plausible. If I can be bothered to download IDA later (don't have my desktop machine here...), I'll look into it myself.

Hehe, I remember this. The old ACS topic also worked as the town square thread additional to the ACS. Infact Town Square was made because we missed having a general discussion topic after ACS was no longer running... glad to see it back.
