Why do they call it "cables" ?
It's only paper or electronic stuff, there is no rope involved...

Seeing that I will lack space way before reaching the last level, I will either make another set of 4 levels in a separate hack (both ROMs would act as a whole), or make levels shorter and pack everything I can in the space left. Of course, ROM expansion is another possibility, although a more complicated one...

For some reason, I started working on a Excitebike editor, named Biker...

The game is very simple, 1 PRG bank and 1 CHR bank. It's a shame there aren't more tracks, and by adding a bank and using the 8000-BFFF memory range, we could insert some serious truckload of tracks...

Check MacUpdate.com, you will probably find what you are looking for...
I use HexEdit, which is probably not as good as many other Hex Editors out there in terms of spiffy functions, but it's enough for me...

Actually, my demo has now 4 hacked levels, and the app works well. There are still some details to cover, like data overflow management and enemy and screens insertion. Then, palettes edition, and stuff like that...

I'd suggest working on level design and at least create one complete and original world, then post screenshots and then maybe a video...

I don't think the original Zelda II is hard either, but what makes anything hard now is the repetitiveness. Patience is not my forte, especially when something needs either repeated killings or pixel jumping. I usually just end up using savestates...

But at least you tried something...

Dammit, I feel like everyone will reproduce all my ideas before I can do it myself, only because they have access to godly software. Although I never thought someone would actually make a bomb ASM hack. Will we be able to break walls?

I'm also somewhat sceptical about the relentless tendency to make Zelda II more like the others, as if the fact that it's the "black sheep" of all makes it obligatory to "raise" or "adjust" the game to the perceived standards. The other way around would be hardly imaginable. Like Zelda 1 or 3 stripped of all items, replaced with magic spells and an experience points system...

Anyway, I'm no sprite artist either. I can help with variables and programming though...

For those interested in the original Contra on the NES, I released the fifth edition of my hack of Contra, made with the Red Falcon editor. It's the Level 5 hacked on a fresh ROM, because of a lack of unused space on the previous ROM. The final hack will either be made of Part 1 and 2, or if I have the time (and the motivation) to do ROM expansion correctly, then it will be released as a single ROM...

And as usual, the difficulty is up a few notches, so if you're having a hard time beating the original Contra, this one will make you suffer. The level has 53 screens, compared to the original 19 screens. Enemies move faster are more violent. The Turret Man shoots faster bullets at a faster rate, the Tank attacks in a random pattern and has now a grenade launcher in addition to its cannon, and the Alien Carrier (Level 5 Boss) is less predictable, has more HP and the flying saucers move much faster...

Contra - Demo Part 2 - Level 5

Give it a try...
