Ack! Another one hits the Intarwebz! Nuts & Bolts is an editor for Nuts and Milk. It's designed pretty much like SMKDan's N&M editor, many thanks to him for all the valuable information. Again, I think the title is spiffy enough, although I'm not even sure what "spiffy" means...
* looks in the dictionary * "Smart in appearance". Bah... The palettes window was shamelessly copied from SMKDan's layout. So yeah, you can change pretty much anything, levels and palettes. You can add, remove, copy and paste levels. Every change to the palettes are made instantly, so you can fiddle with them and see the results as-you-go. Pretty neat... Download Nuts & Bolts 1.0 (Universal Binary) Screenshots! Level 1 Showing the error field: TOO MANY ENEMIES Level 3 - Bonus Type 1 Palettes Window That's it... |

Don't play dumb, it's been said many times that the admins/mods selection has nothing to do with talent or wits or programming sk... Okay, maybe programming skills are taken into account, but... Anyway, you catch my drift... |

Elbobelo, you're right, I picked some information from your notes document, such as the house and water tile mappings. I guess SMKDan got some information from you as well. Thanks for the info... |

I presume you can have more banks, thus more levels, new music, more space for ASM, more anything... |

Start with NES... Definitely...
Learning ASM for the 6502 is not too hard and a good start if you want to learn the basics... |

If you could simply become an admin just by asking for it (like Arbe did), we would live in a very funny world... |

I'm here, but I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble. Writting NES Hacking related software for Mac is indeed interesting for personal accomplishment and coding experience, but the clientele is ridiculously limited. So is the feedback with it, obviously...
If I have all the necessary raw data, I can do marvels in a short amount of time, assuming I have both the spare time and the motivation... In all honesty, I envy DahrkDaiz a lot for all the attention and feedback he can get with his editor. Nevertheless, seeing all the good work he's doing, he deserves it... |

WTF? And to think we can't even ask an admin to delete this, for obvious reasons... It's desperating... Stark is probably the kind of guy who tells an inside joke into a crowd of strangers and expect people to laff their ass off... Is that it? |

That's *almost* what I'm doing with some of my editors' functions. I had to reproduce in C the algorithm used to fill the PPU to come up with the proper tiles in my (WIP) Contra editor...
And when I was working of the scrolling areas in Zelda II Game Editor, I had some functions coded to layout different types of decor parts before knowing how it was done in the ROM. Later when I disassembled this part in the ROM, surprisingly I realized that it was almost identical in principle of functioning... So, it's not exactly assembly, but it's damn close sometimes and we can say some algorithms are basically doing an equivalent job from the ROM data... |

Hey folks, this post inspired me and I fiddled an editor for Contra. It's just the beginning, but at least I managed to decompress the graphics data and layout some tiles:
A part of the PPU is overwritten by boss tiles during gameplay, that's why we see garbage for now... Now I understand why there's almost nothing on Contra in the hacking world. The game doesn't have dedicated CHR banks, so it's a pain right at the start. The graphics are compressed and they change drastically during the game. On the other hand, data is fairly easy to hack because some banks do only one thing. For example, bank 2 is used for levels definitions. Bank 3 is used exclusively for levels tile mappings. Bank 4 contains graphics data. I think Bank 1 is for sound and music... |

Slow but steady, a little more of the editor. You can select from the meta-tiles to set the brush, and modify the decor. Again, many tiles are garbage, because the PPU is not loaded with the tiles corresponding to the boss graphics. No save function yet. The width field is inert for the moment. It looks like the actual number of pages (0x100 pixels wide) is the number on the header + 2. Bank 2 has 2C4 (708 decimal) bytes of unused space at the end, so we can expect possible expansion of levels...
By the way, Never-Obsolete, I shamelessly stolen the title from your screenshot, I hope you don't mind... |
