I'm glad you finally made your way to the various other boards that host their own ROM hacking sections. You've done some excellent, tedious work and it should be shown off.

Sadly, I haven't had much time to play your hack as of late due to work, but that's expected to calm down over the next few weeks when I hire some help. I watched your video and nearly had to pick my jaw up off the floor.

SMB3 needs this kind of love. :3

I finally got around to playing your hack. Short version: Holy shit.

The video doesn't really do it justice. There is a LOT of little ASM stuff that has been done to this hack that truly makes it great. I love the progressive addition in points when in star power ala other Mario games. As strange as it sounds, it made me feel like SMRPG made me feel when I first played it.

On top of that, the level design is also fitting. Some of the castles leave something to be desired, but the boss battles more than make up for it. Rock solid job.

Also, I sent you a PM a while back. Did you get a chance to take a look?

I didn't think many would respond due to the (a)theological shitstorm they'd almost certainly bring upon themselves at some point in their near (or distant) future. Threads like these tend to really stir up heated strife amongst the users. I'm reluctant to talk about it on the net, but here goes:

Yeah I noted that as soon as I saw the thread on IRC feed. :p

I can't really help it as up in Swedish is spelt with 2 "p". Same for "at" (even though it does not mean exactly the same in Swedish) But then again I don't mention this.
I remember when you first showed up on IRC. You were still learning English and I was an assface and always called you out on your liberal use of "upp"... Drove me up the wall.

Lets face facts here, your not the one who design the characters or games that your hacking, so pretty much you have no say so on whats yours legally.
That's a lie, please don't give legal advice if you don't know what you're talking about. ._.

Anything you yourself make (unless you lose the rights to it) you own. What this means is that if you do level a level design only hack for say SMW, you own that level design. This is why distribution in patch form is popular, since you're only handing out what you yourself made.

No one else could go about and try and sell this design that you made, regardless of the need for the rest of the game code. To put it plainly, a hack (in ROM format) is not owned by neither part, but rather, both. Therefore, neither would be able to profit on it unless a deal is made among both (or more) parts. Of course, it's even more complicated then what I said, but this is not what this thread is for.

Prove that to me this week, call nintendo themselves and ask them about it.
I'll say it for the final time, you touch the game "super metroid" you rework everything in it including the coding and its still not yours legally which is your hack.

You were not the original copy-right author or producer for that game, so you have no right to speak about it, ever!

I think 4 major game makers and more would say a whole lot differently with a legal team against you behind closed doors.

Please look at my post again and noticed how I said ips patches are safe for now.
If you make something, it's yours. If the material/medium you used to make it is someone else's, your creation is an idea and therefore yours. You may be obligated to credit someone else for said use of the medium, or be subject to legal action should you violate some EULA or otherwise. This is a hairy world we live in nowadays when it comes to laws and rights. Your arrogance makes you believe you're right, to the point of defending yourself in a manner that is quite stuck-up and outright rude. Fortunately, in this case, you now look like a complete douchebag who doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. If you're going to go on this way with an attitude like that, you probably just shouldn't post.

Lol, bumping old ask threads. Not complainin' though.

I really don't even do hacking anymore. Basically I just hang out with my roommates in my free time and date this one girl. Other times I'm just working. Not much else going on...

I've been into Stargate lately, and playing Xbox Live Arcade games. Worms 2: Armageddon is my main game right now, only because there are others that are interested.

Blacky's in charge of the radio. He says that he doesn't justify running the radio since the one or possibly two people who listen are kafuka goers anyway.

Well, when I learned you could play old games on the computer, it wasn't long before I learned that I could edit them. It took me a while before I broke down what needed to be done for a hack to be made; graphics, level design, hex editing, finding new data, etc..

Super Metroid is a favorite, followed closely by Metroid Prime series. Mostly MP1. Super Metroid was one of the few games I've ever actually made a full-fledged tileset for, and one of the few games I regularly play still.

I was part of it (or at least was a lurker) since way back when Acmlm's was in its infancy. I've just took the paths that led me to this point. No real particular paths, just went with the flow, I guess.

I appreciate your concerns KP, but your post came off as a little more then propaganda due to you ending it with advertisement. :/
Perhaps, but it is still very relevant since people are beginning to make threads about this place not being there when they need it most.
Posted by MikeFuryXP
give the man some sort of credit would ya ?
You think I haven't? I guess that's correct for you to assume that since I don't remember you being a part of my many conversations with him. Truth is, I think he did a great job in the beginning, but it just amazes me people will still defend him when he's not even around.
Posted by MikeFuryXP
Last time I spoke with him, he was busy with his college work and preparing to do some other things.
It still doesn't justify him letting this place stagnate. He should have handed it over or at least let someone else step in and take care of things for a while.

I think most of us know kafuka exist
Some don't, and we even had one register because of my "recon" (I think you meant recruit)
Posted by MikeFuryXP
so there is no need to cry over spilled milk. That and you have a administrator position over there to keep things steady
what the fuck does that even mean
Posted by MikeFuryXP
move on without black
Now you're getting it.

Look, I'm not against board2, I'm against blackhole89. If he can show up and show a little fucking initiative that he has one last ounce of respect for us all and give this place up, he can move on with his life and focus on his education and career. It just doesn't make sense why he would hold on to these ties when he has much more relevant things to do, and it speaks ill of him to not show up and hand the place over.

Been a while since I posted here.

I can't tell you how to do it directly, but there is a method.

If you have FCEUX, open up the RAM viewer, and save your state just before a boomboom fight. Choose another save state slot, and, just before it jumps, save state in a new slot. Then, as the boomboom jumps, keep your eye on the RAM values and see if any of them correlate. If you see one that does, you can freeze this value to see if his behavior has changed. If it has, then there is code writing to this value. If there isn't any change, unfreeze that value and try again, loading the state each time he jumps. (You can do the same thing for # of hits- look for changing values, likely to be 02, then 01, then 00)

After you found the byte in RAM that correlates to jump height (or # of hits) then you can then trace the code. Open up the Debugger and set a write breakpoint to the value you found in RAM. (To avoid confusion, just load state to right before you expect the value to change) and there would be your likely point of code to modify. For # of hits, you probably can't just change the amount, because each phase has a certain style, who knows what'll happen if you just go above that set value.

Been a while since I just opened this up, I'm afraid I can't be more specific than that.

I can't remember. For some reason I'm thinking of an old Apple ad campaign. A quick, lazy google search isn't turning anything up either... Care to enlighten us, Mr. Mystery?

Super Demo Bros. 3 v0.2.1 Direct Linked zomg
Obscure Kingdom v0.4 OMG I did it again

Here's some screenies.

Super Demo Bros. 3 v0.2.1:

This little hack is a fully functional 1 world mini hack. It fucks up completely after beating Koopa Kid, but it's pristine up until that point.

Obscure Kingdom v0.4:

This hack took a bit longer to make, and has my first ASM hack implemented in it. I called it "power chips". You get powers when you collect coins; in this version I had Mario get a tiny bit of Star Power and Flight time for each coin he collects. I had written code that allows for different powers depending on what world you're in. World 1 is complete, mostly, (Use save states before each level to be sure) so when youc omplete W1, it should glitch, but will go to the next world. That world is messed up though, so save state before you try levels. One of them is the level I used to test out the Power Chips hack. I remade some levels that were in SMB3 vanilla because with Reuben I had more flexibility with graphics and such. Added some dimension to them.

I hope you enjoy these; I doubt they'll ever get anywhere what with Reuben in limbo and all. Let me know if you have any questions. I'd like to see someone do an LP of them!

Copypasta from Kafuka
- Yep, we've got a ROM Hacking section too.

No, they're unfinished. And all they've been doing is sitting on my hard drive, so I thought I'd just release them. I doubt I'd pick these up again. There are a few things wrong with these hacks but that's what you get with unfinished stuff. Use Save States!

Edit for clarification on bugs:
Posted by "KP"
Keep in mind that these are both unfinished. I never bothered to fix any of this before releasing. The hard levels were meant for later parts of the game but put them all in W1 to be accessible.

Yeah, gotta use save states. A lot, I guess. There are a few bugs.

Game over takes you on a tile other than start. Use Save States or Game Genie code for extra lives.

Some pipes (such as the ones in that underground level, bordering the bottom of the level, weren't meant for you to go in. There aren't that many. This is caused by pipes that are enterable but don't have pointers.

As for garbageland: When you enter a tile that doesn't have a pointer attached to it, it just loads the last level data loaded (which is the world map) and the last enemy data used. You'll run into this. I suggest.... more save states.

Trust me, if I had intended to make a full hack out of this, I'd have fixed or worked around these bugs. Releasing these 'as is' is the best I can do.

As I said, they were unfinished. I'm not going to touch them, so I released them 'as is', as I stated in my previous post. If I was going to release something complete, it'd be better. The tools I used to make these are no longer being developed.

Use save states, like I said more than once in my last post, so you don't get stuck.

Remember, it's not a finished product. Not by a long shot. Treat it that way and you can look past the issues and see that it might be a decent hack.

It's released, so anyone can do whatever with it.
