Here's the special ROM you need. Make sure it loads first before using it with the editor, I had some issues with it beforehand.

First off, I'd like to point you to the "SMB3 general inquiry" sticky thread. That's where all of your SMB3 related questions and discussions go.

As for your issue itself, I don't know what I can do to help you, but I will tell you what I know.

I know that each of the 14 tilesets have their own set of properties, such as water tiles, death tiles, slopes, solid, background, etc.. I remember DahrkDaiz teling me it was all hardcoded. I don't know how to find this data, but for the TSA (the 4 8x8 tiles part, also known as Map16) I suppose you could download a beta copy of Reuben and go into the TSA editor. You could then get the hex code of each of the 8x8 tiles. Using this, you could just search for the string in the ROM and change it accordingly. Alternatively, I know DahrkDaiz has released a TSA editor that you would probably be better off with. It's here at Datacrystal.

Ok, so I decided to make a thread about my hack because it doesn't really have a home right now.

The hack name is Obscure Kingdom and is a darker, grittier take on SMB3. It's somewhat loosely based on my fanfic of the same name, also aiming to make the Mario universe a darker, more horrific reality; as if the story was being told as it would occur in real life.

Though, with the NES, always having a dark and gritty setting would limit me artistically, because of the limitations of the system, so you will see some brighter areas here and there.

Technically, the hack itself will be a regular SMB3 hack; there will not be any ASM hacks that change how the game plays from the original. However, there will be many technical ASM hacks to enable limitations to be lifted with the ROM itself. One, is to allow it to be expanded and used wit Reuben. The second is to be able to add songs into the game, along side the originals.

I do not take any credit for these ASM modifications as they will be applied as patches made by DahrkDaiz and JaSp to use their editors and utilities.

So, let's get on with some screenshots and videos!

This is the title screen of my hack, which will likely change before its final release. Small amount of ASM was used to move he position of the selection arrow.

This video shows one of the first levels I have made before the advent of Reuben. You will see this level in a more glorious Reuben form in the hack!

This video, again, shows the title screen, but it also shows most of World 1. All of the levels in this video will be in the hack, but they will be re-made to better take advantage of the new level format used by Reuben. I may reuse the map screen.

The video also showcases minor edits to music sequence data and instruments. This was the beginnings of the music hacking JaSp has allowed me to perform.

This is when I first started messing with Reuben and making test levels. I wanted to see what could be done. Needless to say, this video shows the potential of what can be done but at the same time barely scratches the surface. I may or may not bring some of these levels back.

This video showcases the differences between the Original SMB3 level format and DD's new Reuben format. Also has a new music track (Zelda 2 Caves/Action) I imported using JaSp's music inserter.

This video shows the hack in its most complete form, as of the day after Christmas, 2009. It has several new levels and new music tracks. And, a nifty Super Mario Land 1-1 remake.

Here's a screenshot of Septic Sanctuary. This also got an overhaul.

The hack itself is currently on hold until I can get DD to fix a bug in the current beta build (1.4) not allowing me to add new palettes.

That level is really clever, but it's not my style, I guess. One wrong move and you have to start over. Levels shouldn't rely on your skills as heavily as that, I believe. On the other hand, SMB3 doesn't really have much to offer in terms of secrets and the only real thing to work for is the end of a level. So, any secrets there may be, a player is likely to pass them up because the secret has little worth.

It does take some thinking to put together a level like that though. Good work.

Either some troll is really bored and has nothing better to do with his life than to pester the internet, or someone is just horribly misinformed about this place.

We don't particularly care if someone online is cheating or not, especially when some new guy registers just to post this. Closed.

Yeah, I kinda have to make sure that the lead channel of the song isn't the same channel as the sound effects. I believe they use both square channels so there's no getting away from that...

I've been working on a remake of level 5-3 in the original. Eventually I'm gonna have to show this off because it looks absolutely amazing! The idea to remake 5-3 spawned the idea to take it further and make a whole world in my hack remakes of original levels. Each level will have an extra special secret in it!

Technically, you could just write the address in the cheat console in FCEU~

Open it up, type in the address you want to write to in the "address" field then type in your song number in the "value" field. Click add! I'm not sure if that really works though, but try anyway.

Jaspile, out of curiosity, the converter tool... does it output corrupted files less than it does now? Are you (or can you) going to improve the compatibility?

You know, I can (barely) understand why one wouldn't want to use Reuben.

But not even taking a few minutes to go through this thread to find out why the ASM patch won't be made for the regular ROM?

lkshdgk;adhg;a

No.

Please do us a favor and just read the thread before you ask questions. He's not going to make an ASM patch for the regular ROM. End of story. Asking over and over isn't going to help you at all. In fact, it will only cause issues in the end.

Closed.

I have 24Mbit steady. I have a close acquaintance relationship (slightly less than friends) with the mayor and I have been talking to him about my neighborhood taking part of this newfangled Google fiber network. Those speeds reach 1Gbps.

We're acquainted due to us being a member of the same congregation of our church. This was after election. Oh, and price for this magical line is about the same as what normal cable is offering their service for.

I don't really know what qualifies as a "neighborhood" but within our block... I'd say about 200 people.

I am completely oblivious to those numbers. I have no idea what those variables are. And yeah, I am, but you don't typically make that kind of stuff known for fear of condescension and scrutiny come upon you in the form of internet hellfire.

But, on topic, I doubt I'm getting the speed I should be due to this wireless network and my unsatisfactory proximity to it. Other solutions are impractical, so I'm stuck with what I have.

No fucking shit, Sherlock.

Judging by your previous 28 posts, did you leave your brain at the front door?

Something else so this post isn't entirely "oh god why":

anyone got any neat plans with this when it's done?
I have a thread in this forum buried a little bit that shows a fairly large project with Reuben. I've uploaded videos and such that showcases a fraction of what can be done with this editor. I'd link you to the thread but I am too lazy to do it since I'm on my Blackberry and its a pain to copy links.

Whatever happened to the old favicon anyway? I like it way more than the one we have now...

But damn, those look pretty good. Great work with those medals. \

If there's such a working ROM and a program, then there shouldn't be a problem telling us the link to them.
DahrkDaiz personally gave me the ROM when I was signed on as a beta tester. When this happens, you are trusted to keep things like that to yourself. This isn't just a piece of publicly released software, it's a prototype tool that seems... almost tangible when you consider its rarity and symbolism of trust. Really, if I wanted to, I could release it right now despite what DahrkDaiz has to say about it, but, among other reasons, you guys should trust me that you would rather be happier if all the bugs were worked out and all the features were embedded.

Just wait it out, you guys. Go play Cave Story Wii when it comes out on the 22nd. Much shorter wait, I'd assume.

Yeah, it would be a little nicer. I agree. I've got a project using Reuben that has been on a standstill since discovering a bug present in the newest build. For the first time ever, I have the motivation to work on a progress but can't. So you aren't the only one who believes this project should see a little more activity.

That being said, real life takes priority. Whatever DahrkDaiz deems necessary to do with his project is his business, regardless of requests or dependencies of others.

I know the pipe in the beginning is changed, but vertical pointer pipes don't work right now so I'm stuck with horizontal ones. Weird bug, but whatever.

Anyway, I plan on making an entire world of original level remakes, so if anyone wants to suggest a level they'd like to see in this hack to appear in this world, drop them here!

In the future, men will be implanted with radio receivers attuned to receiving only the metal overlord's will, a pure evil satanic murmur coming from his guitar. Men will venture to rock concerts on low trace-atmosphere remote moonlets shirtless, skin chafing and freezing in a matter of seconds. The show must go on, and thus the mayhem continues as those without an implant covered by an environmental suit stand in senseless awe hearing nothing, just viewing what he deems to be the very pit of human existence.

A guitarist isn't a guitarist unless he knows exactly what he's playing. Also, the suit likely has the radio system piped into it anyway.

It's all a matter of a point-of-view. A paid programmer is someone that looks at his work as his job. He doesn't really care what kind of work he's doing, as long as it gets done. His incentive is a paycheck. A homebrewer on the other hand has an appreciation for the code and has a desire to purely create; with little to no ulterior motives. His incentive is a piece of material he has made himself, much like a painter or sculptor. These types of people often do things by themselves and often knows his resources and knows mistakes can be costly. He then becomes as best as he can be at his task.
