Alright, here's my entry: Shaft Fortress Catacombs

Here are some screenshots!

Coming up on the foundation of a very ominous looking fortress...

Am I supposed to fall down there? In the dark?

How about we close the deadline and not judge until we get at least one more judge? I'd judge, but I've got a level submitted already...

Deadline has ended for level submission for this contest. We need more judges to continue.

However, since judging involves judging *every* level by *each* judge, I believe the one judge that we have already shouldn't have to wait until another joins. I recommend someone who has at least made an average hack. Alastor would be a perfect judge. FirePhoenix has judged before, over on SMWCentral.

I'd like to contribute a couple of levels. I'd like to use my level from the SMW contest but with new graphics.

I'll have to redesign this level anyway, since I have to move lots of crap around. Personally, I think this would fit well at the beginning of the castle. It leads down to the basement of the tower, all the way to the rocky foundation. This sets up more levels for the tower itself, because now Mario has to crawl all the way back up the distance he fell.

Trust me, I have tons planned for graphics.

Argh, I told you in a PM, I'm only temporary. Also, I don't think I have that kind of power. Besides, KP9000 is the one with the frog coin debt, not you >8(

Yeah, I've got a bad problem with that. Good thing I'm almost out of the hole... however, the frog coin economy doesn't exist, so I fear I'll never be able to make amends for my debt...

Here's how it is where I live:

Morning: Hot.
Afternoon: Hot.
Evening: Hot.
Night. Hot.

NONSTOP. D:

The worst part is, I like cold weather.
I get the feeling you live in Arizona, like me. I'm getting ready to move the hell out of here, because I agree with you. Cops are dicks, it's too fucking hot, and nobody knows how to fuck up the legal system worse than Arizona.

So, Spring/Summer in Idaho or Utah should be nice.

Simmer down, there... not worth it. (LOL INTERNET)

Anyway, Buu-Huu, Most editors are only built for one specific ROM. You can't just open any rom in any editor and expect it to work. Some editors are built so it takes several ROMs, but that's rare.

Back on topic: Randy, I think you should build your editor after the Lunar Magic model. It works fine, aside from some issues. Oh, and no motherfucking easter eggs.

Now, I aim to remake my level to fit the ToS style, is there anything I should change/add to make this fit with others' levels and/or ToS as a whole? I'm gonna start scouting for which levels I will use within the ROM.

I cannot guarantee there will be no Easter eggs , but I will not hide any important functionality in them. They would be merely cosmetic. Then again, I value conciseness & small executables, so Easter eggs are unlikely.
Glad to hear it.

"Yeah, let's put in codes for the editor! It'll be just like a game!"
Because that's just fucking stupid. If anything, make them like SMILE. A random STFU n00b here and there; nothing horribly irritating that impedes your hacking progress like the dickwad idea the "Chelsea" code was.

But why "lock" people out of something? It's not like letting the n00bs use it is going to defile the great god of hacking... Make it available, because you never know what people could do. Sure, they might make some pretty stupid shit, but it's just a design flaw to introduce editing functions as easter eggs.

Since Brawl is released on Sunday, I was thinking about having a monthly get-together for supreme bragging rights. Would you participate? I sure as hell would.

Reasons to participate: Boosts community activity, spirit, and promotes healthy competition.

Examples of excuses not to participate: You suck, you're bedridden with a debilitating sickness, you practice judaism, etc..

I only said Sunday because that's the official release date. I actually live in Arizona and probably won't be picking it up until Monday...

If it comes out screwed up, see if the ROM you are using has a header. A header is a useless filler at the beginning of the ROM with a length of 0x200 (512 decimal) bytes. Look for a bunch of zeros at the beginning and just delete them. Or add them, if you previously had a ROM with no header and it didn't work...

You can add/delete them using a hex editor or you can use snestool.

Honestly, I would rather shovel snow all winter (and spring) than put up with this insane Arizona heat one more summer. I've shoveled snow before, too. Heavy, thick snow. I prefer a colder environment. Easier to warm up than cool down, I always say.

See, that's where Level Design ends and prehistoric toilets begin. If you can't play a level on a real SNES without losing losing all of your lives in the process, then it's not good level design. Anything that takes 294057 save states to get through is not level design, it's shit. Now, I haven't played Shellkicker Cavern myself, I'm just stating facts. Good level design is a mixture of many things. You must have excellent flow in gameplay. It's just a rule. You shouldn't expect a player to have foreknowledge of anything when they do play your level for the first time. You must give clues, hints, and rewards for all of your puzzles. Go play Alastor's (Kyouji Craw's) hack "Mario's Return" for a (mostly) good example of this. You must also not have anything in your level that kills you unexpectedly. Too many sprites on the screen can cause bad things to happen.

Just follow these guidelines and you'll be just fine.
