setz,

"I kind of like lurker periods because they give the user a chance to read over the rules before they make any stupid posts, and make advertisers and spammers alot easier to weed out."

Hmm, not necessarily. If you read here for example:

http://board.acmlm.org/thread.php?id=10730

It's just I think it's always been a good idea that they had to sort of explain what they were going to do to demonstrate that they are capable of actually saying things and being understood.

Yes. It will be serious.

Frankly, I don't think that's a good idea. The nature of Femine's Corner and Officer's Club is wholly different and usually mutually exclusive of the nature of World Affairs and Debate forums. Of course, they're both for "serious business," but there's different kinds of serious business.

I agree as well. Having a heated discussion about abortion, gay marriage, etc., right next to a thread by someone contemplating suicide, for example, just would be pretty inappropriate.

NES Programming/Hacking: I created an Address Use Logger in FCEUXD SP and am working on a program that's built around a hex editor that can use the code/data logger, address use logger, and the debugger name files. The hex editor will come with an on-the-fly disassembler that helps you "guess" what the still unlogged portions of the ROM are. Afterwards, it will assist in producing a grand disassembly project file that lets you do a grand disassembly of the game (i.e. revert it as close to its source code as possible). I've implemented the address use logger in FCEUXD SP already and created some programs that can work with it. Now I'm working on setting up a hex editor and just learning the various things I would need to do to help set up this program. This is something I'm working on slowly and hope to finish for y'all.

if((othertoken < MIN_CHECK) || (othertoken > MAX_CHECK)) continue;

Is there anything wrong with this line of code (C), and if so, What? I'm trying to compile this as part of a program, using the MINGW compiler. If I remove this line of code from the program, it compiles fine with no errors/warnings. If this line is present however, I will get a syntax error:

syntax error before ';' token

And I am completely baffled....

Anybody care to give this a shot, to point out why this line produces a syntax error? Thanks.

EDIT: To clarify, the syntax error points to the line of the code I posted above (i.e. the line number given is the one that the code posted above is on).

EDIT 2: OK, there was something wrong in the define (MIN_CHECK and MAX_CHECK were #defined). I didn't do the commenting properly. It is fixed now. Boy, that was a dumb error. Goes to show that errors come out of unexpected places.

SNN,

As a recommendation, I would replace the dark red on the rocks, with maybe a black, grayish, or even bluish-greenish color, to help counterbalance the red at least a little bit. There is an awful lot of red, and too much red (unlike a lot of blue) hurts the eyes. (Think: Super Red Bros.)

EDIT: You can possibly do the same with the cliff faces too.

And at the last minute, here's my submission:

A Night in the Wood

http://beneficii.net/public/designcontest/anightinthewood.ips

(It has 2 exits; the 2nd exit of course messes up the overworld, but I believe that's not judged.)

EDIT: For the deadline, I hope they don't go by the board time. I submitted it between 5 and 6 PM CST (GMT -6).

no, level data has to be in specific regions of the rom.
I know this thread hadn't any significant discussion in awhile but just out of curiosity, which regions?

The game has different types of levels with different things going on in them, so different ROM banks deal with different types. The fortress levels have their own type and the vertical levels have their own type and the hilly levels have their own type; consequently, since different code is required to deal with each type and since there is so much of it, it has to be put in different banks and when you select the object set, you are selecting the bank that is going to be loaded. Also, the enemy data is all put into one bank.

With regards to the map editing, it would require extensive assembly hacking to have a vertical-scrolling map screen. But my SMB3MAP editor (which will probably be rendered obsolete by DahrkDaiz's editor) gives you a good number of options already: changing the lock positions, changing the pipe positions, etc. It also provides an assembly hack that allows you to change the horizontal position and screen in which you start the world.

Jimmy,

Well, stay on. Just because you feel another judge is bullying you into changing your results doesn't mean you should quit. Hang on to your results. (And I know I'm talking to a person who called my level "poor.")

Well, actually that's not quite the reason...it's because I think I also messed up your results. I must've applied the patch to a bad ROM and it turned out glitchy. Maybe I'll see if I can change it, though.

Yes, if you might be having issues with patching, do tell me and don't just assume that it was my bad design that caused them. I'll try testing the patch today.

EDIT: Just so you know, the IPS patch was based on the "Super Mario World (U) [!]" ROM.

OK, I tested out the patch, and it seems to work fine for my level. Remember, please apply it to "Super Mario World (U) [!]." Anyway, I hope we can get some feedback on these levels as well, to see how our levels are either good or bad. I don't think my level had any glitches.

Alastor,

I concede the point about the flagpole. The cloud I need to look at.

I did notice the problems with the mushrooms, but due to time constraints I did not have too much time to investigate it, though I attempted a little. I assumed it was a function of either the tileset or the bathroom.

As for the secret exit, with all due respect, I must say your own lack of imagination prevents you from reaching there. Hint: Get a cape, take the springboard with you.

EDIT: Corrected some grammatical errors. Boy, I need some sleep.

EDIT2: More grammatical corrections and added "function" point.

EDIT3: Since it's so funny, I'll keep it, but I can't believe I typed "bathroom" there. Wow. I need some sleep. I'm having trouble remembering what I attempted to write.

No, I know where it is, there's just no FLOOR there.

See? No floor.

Oh, I see. I did note that too. There was only room in the tileset for a lower-right tile. In addition, I ultimately went with it to give a sort of stepping-into-another-world effect, like it is one of an incomplete bonus room that has issues. I thought it would fit in the theme of "A Night in the Wood" where you magically go from the trees to the clouds and back, almost like a dream.

The stones are supposed to represent a somewhat imperfect reality where the magic of the bonus room gets cut off by reality.

And no, I am not a druggie, lol.

Keep in mind I have not played your level as I write this.

You say you only had room in the tileset for one lower-right tile? It doesn't look like there's too much graphical usage in that area. To me it just looks like you were lazy with the room.

Now, if you have a mix of graphic sets in such a way that you have no more room, then that's half okay but would it really have been hard to fit in another 8x8 tile or two for proper floors? You could've even put the tiles in the BG file. You're not using one as it is...

I considered it, and I was researching how, but I decided against it, because I wanted to create that element of the bonus land being cut off by reality.

You're right, there was a lot to research that I did not have much time to research, such as the items not appearing until they're fully formed, etc. I'm still not quite sure why that happened.

spring is 3/21

Though meteorological spring in the US starts on March 1st, so this snowstorm is somewhat amazing.

We got half-a-foot of snow in Memphis here, but most of that has already melted.

EDIT: Fixed typos.

Hmm, in this situation it would appear that the principle of double effect applies. (The principle of double effect tests the justification of an action that can result in both good and bad effects.) One of the conditions for such an act to be justified is:

"the good effect (relieving pain) does not go through the bad effect (e.g., death)."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_effect

It would appear that in both situations, you would have to accomplish the good act (saving some of the lives) through the bad act (sacrificing other lives).

Since I agree with the principle of double effect as a test, I would answer NO to both cases.

I'd simply wait until MathOnNapkins finishes his editor or hack it myself, but I would not recommend using Hyrule Magic, since you would be limiting yourself.
