Interesting thing about this contest...there's more parts to it. 6 parts total. How do I know? Garret gives a hint to LocalH's last post on the site.. http://www.ratedo.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=218

He indicates a site that's full of BS...which is actually referring to BS Zelda. On their forums, there's an extra hint to this contest, and mention of 6 parts. If it weren't for that hint I would never have been able to get any further.

Anyway, this should help everyone get past this roadblock of a clue..sort of gets you thinking though doesn't it? Of COURSE it would be disappointing if the ROM wasn't real after completing the puzzle...more in the sense of it being a waste of talent. I'll enjoy the puzzle for what it is though.

Well, upon finding out about the hidden 3s and emailing him about it, I got this reply.

Nice story!

Anyways, there is something to be said about the story, the three 3's and the
zelda games. Figure that out and you'll get to the next step!

-okibi

I've been racking my brain all day yesterday, and trying anything related to dragons and scales in the Legend of Zelda. Gleeoks, Trinexx, Zoras..etc. I was considering since there's 3 or each thing...three scales, three 3s, and three pieces of the Triforce, the "three" would be omitted and would be left scale, 3, and something else...

On another look, the story was related to a dragon god leaving scales...the Triforce was pretty much left by the three goddesses....but what would the 3 relate to....

The question still remains...is the answer something cryptic that leads to another page on a website or some video on his site to watch? or are we just simply plug it in the address bar and play password cracker in order to progress? I'll try emailing him and see if I can get a response...

Well, I already knew about Sierpinski's Triangle, but I haven't made any progress with any info on that. I also know that a piece of the triforce looks like the Delta symbol, and if I remember correctly the name Zelda was derived from Delta.

Its all a bunch of speculation anyways...

ah, I couldn't really remember where I read that from anyway.

Still no reply from Okibi...and I noticed on the main contest page the final date is now 4/5.

We'll probably never get to see this ROM now..

Edit: Just realized that the story of the Hojo symbol is very similar to Valoo in The Wind Waker (directly quoted from the game script):

"When a Rito reaches adulthood, he or she journeys to the top of Dragon Roost to receive a scale from the great dragon. It is this scale that enables the Rito to grow his or her wings."

My head hurts..

I can only say that I was somewhat on track...but I was certain the game involved would be Wind Waker because of the in game quote related to Valoo.

I don't think there was any way I would've related it to Barba, because there's too many dragons to begin with.

Gleeok, known to have multiple heads and could be related to the number 3.

Trinexx, which is a three headed dragon which name also implies 3.

Also, the clue of 3s pointing to Three Eye Rock could've easily fit in with my idea of it pointing to the Triangle Islands in Wind Waker, because there's 3 of them, and they're related to the Triforce picture. So that could very well be pointing to the Tower of the Gods.

Puzzles aren't fun if the clues aren't carefully crafted and end up fitting multiple scenarios...

"I am Error" is a person in Zelda II, and Zelda's picture is official art from The Minish Cap.
After talking to someone Error gives you information that "South of Kings Tomb in Mido is a Tunnel".
Mido is the Kokiri who blocks your way to the Great Deku Tree in Ocarina of Time.

The Deku tree and his children reappear in The Wind Waker, but are now called Koroks. The Deku Tree explains this in this quote:
"These are the Koroks-the spirits of the forest. Once upon a time, long ago, the Koroks took
on human forms, but when they came to live on the sea, they took these shapes. Now they fear people... but to me, they will ever be my cherished little children."

It also happens in the Wind Waker they hold a festival every year. Deku tree also explains this:
"As it happens, you have come just in time for a ceremony that the
Koroks hold but once ever year."

In the Minish Cap the Picori are now the children of the forest, and in Hyrule they hold the Picori festival once a year. This is where the picture is connected, because its in this festival that Zelda wins that shield for Link in a contest!

Sadly enough, my deductions weren't even right! *laughs maniacly*

I'm thinking part of the hint Okibi gave in his comments involves the fact that Link didn't win the shield at the festival, rather it was given to him by Zelda.

Drag is on the right track This step actually isn't that hard.

And before I forget, have a Happy 19th birthday, XKeeper!

Edit: I don't like to spoil things, but I'd also like to keep things moving. Basically I gave a detailed description behind the quote and Zelda, and that was good enough.

Now let's get more people working on step 5! It seems easy at first, but with this contest, everything is more then it seems

Aside from the extra complications, its my favorite step so far.

you basically need the Hylian font, or a whole lot of free time, in order to translate everything. In other words, its not true Hylian. *rollseyes* Anyway, I'm stuck at what the meaning behind what the "Old Hylian" text is referring to...emailing the translation isn't good enough.

Anybody have any clues as to what it would mean?

Well, the step say that, but when he sent me the image, he provided extra instructions:

"Tell me the meaning of the attached image. There is a question, a hint, and a
clue within it. Can you figure it out?"

Basically his reponse to my translation was that I translated it but didn't solve the step.

He hasn't responded to my Sheik theory yet (Old Hylian question -> OoT or MM -> Shiek hiding information from Link and would be a freak appearance of Zelda in itself)

EDIT: I found various Hylian pages on the net, and downloaded the modern from hyrulerealm.guardianarchives.com and the Old Hylian from a link on Omniglot. Old Hylian took the most time to figure out since I was under the impression it was "true" Old Hylian.

You guys realize that this is all just fucking with you, right? You'll have to keep jumping through hoops and will never receive a copy of this prototype rom, since the guy doesn't even have such a thing.

I'd hate to assume since I'm not him, but I'm mostly doing it for the challenge anyway..even though some of it is too vague to solve without lots of hints, lol.

I have an idea, how about one of you post the translation of the text for those of us that wouldn't mind taking a crack at it, but don't care enough to spend the time needed to translate when people claim to have already translated it?

Talk about lazy..

Well, I emailed the zeldafreak from rated o to see if he had any info, also a dude from some Zelda Freak website that came up on google. No response yet. But I should point out that when I translated the mesage, it wasn't all cut and clear. The image I attatched show how it was directly translated, and may contain some clues. (NOTE: the letters in red, there are always 2 of them, equal 1 Hylian symbol, the letters in blue are not directly translated, but the only letters that fit in place) Also Okibi may know some Japanese (I'm not for sure, but I remember reading something a while back that pointed to this), so there's the possibility of some coded japanese text, but again, I'm not for sure.

http://aycu36.webshots.com/image/14915/2006112892060144267_rs.jpg

I think I should note that when I was first translating the message I was under the impression that it was all in Japanese, which is what Hylian is originally..but none of it was making any sense. I decided to find a font for easier translation, and found that it was a simple letter swap. Then working on the Old Hylian I did the whole thing in Japanese and got random stuff like flowers and lotus, and an impulsive apprentice, but after finding the 2nd font it was yet another letter swap.

Its interesting to note that the first character in the Old Hylian message has nothing to do with Old Hylian itself, but is actually in the shape of the Japanese Katakana 'ri'...which for some reason was included in the Old Hylian font. So I highly doubt any of this message was intended as Japanese.

Just remember that Okibi's old end date for the contest, April 5'th (4/5/07), was a clue to step 6.

I thought that date was only for an "extra" clue for people who solve the 3rd step BY that date?

With this step I'm assuming the numbers translate into letters.

Best way to start is by using the 5 numbered digit that starts and ends in zero. its the most unique number and would result in a much smaller list of words that start and end with the same letter.

Using this word list I compiled all the 5 letter words fitting that criteria.

About the numbers, THEY DO TRANSLATE TO WORDS. You just need to figure out how.

-okibi

Great! Its good to hear that my idea was on the right track.

Here's my biggest worry, if the date 4/5/07 acts as a kind of cipher, then my original assumption would be wrong and it could be any word really. I don't really think the answer would be so obscure as to require tedious trial and error such as that though..

holy crap, and I tried using four and five before and came up with no reasonable answer.

I guess this throws out the idea..
