Hello all!
I've been playing around with the information here on Board 2 for a long time now and thought I should register and ask a couple questions about SMB3 for NES that I'm struggling with. I've been working on my hack for a few years now and I'll share it if enough people are interested! 1) How do you change the score to receive the N-Spade? I believe the original score is 80,000. 2) Frozen Coin Blocks: Is there a way to make this block non-slippery yet still keep the ability to change into a coin when shot with a fireball? I tried fixing it with hex editing but can't come up with anything. When I edit the ice blocks in the game to make everything non-slippery, it also, unfortunately, gets rid of the ability to shoot the ice block into a coin. Any help is appreciated! Thank you! |

Thanks for the help and feedback guys!
What program do you all use to change the Tile ID or do I need to know enough asm to do it? I'm using workshop but the object definition section does not save at all. |

Okay! I don't know the exact RAM address for the block. I didn't know if there was a clean cut way of doing it before I start hunting for the address. Looking for it right now.
I do have the SMB3 Map Editor and I'm using it! However, I'm not able to use the Discombobulator on my computer because my DLL Component doesn't support the program. I'm having problems with the other programs as well. The Text Editor asks for the Strongvault Online Backup in order to install it, but I don't have the correct one I guess??? When I try to open Vegas, my computer asks what program to use to open it. Right now, I'm primarily focused on finishing my levels and maps on Workshop and Map Editor before I worry about the other stuff here. It's mainly the ice block that I want to change. To add, I love the video you posted here! Very Awesome! |

Hey everybody. Just thought I'd drop in and share my Blaster Master hack. This is my redesigned version of the classic game Blaster Master. Every tank and overhead level has been redesigned, area portals relocated, and some palette changes here and there. Here is the link!
AJ Blaster Master V1.1 If you haven't played the original Blaster Master game, I highly recommend it. I think it's the most underrated NES game out there and it has a solid fan base. I grew up playing this game and I don't remember the experience I had figuring the game out but I imagine it may take a couple tries to get the hang of it (such as not being able to fall from high places when you exit the vehicle). Other than that it's a great experience. I hope there is enough people out there who remember and love this game. Let me know your thoughts! Enjoy the game!!!! |

Posted by mrrichard999 I appreciate it! I've had very little feedback on this project though. I can only hope it's worth the time and energy. Thanks again. |

I've been working on this project on and off for 2 1/2 years and plan to release it sometime before the new year. I've always dreamed of creating an SMB3 game (or Hack if you will) and my dream is slowly becoming a reality.
I consider myself a conservative hacker. My goal is to stay true to the SMB3 game while creating new and intriguing worlds to explore. This project includes... 1) 8 New Worlds 2) Custom Music for each Overworld 3) Modified sprites to make them more challenging 4) Custom Graphics 5) Bonus 'Club' games in the overworld 6) Modified Texts (Princess Letters) 7) Rearranged Spade Match Game and more... I'm using a variety of programs to do this, including SMB3 Workshop I'll share some of my work so far. World 1: Fungi Marsh (6 Levels, 1 Castle, Airship) Fungi Marsh Overworld Little custom graphics with modified Boomerang Brother. The Boomerang hovers above his head for a second to avoid easy kills. Fungi Marsh: Level 1-6 World 2: Native Ruins (5 Levels, 2 Native Temples, 1 Castle, Airship) The end of Level 2-5 Inside one of the Native Temples filled with traps and treasures. World 3: Crystal Valley (10 Levels, 2 Castles, Airship) Princess Letter before entering World 3 Dodging Bullet Bills in Level 3-10 Crystal Valley Overworld I thought it would be neat to use the Bonus Area graphics to create a fairly challenging level!! World 4: Boulder Islands (8 Levels, 2 Castles, Airship) Lots of water in this world, good news for Boss Bass!! Boulder Islands Overworld This game includes more challenging airship levels, including this one in World 4. World 5: Golden Plains (9 Levels, 2 Castles, 1 Golden Temple, Airship) 1st Fortress in World 5 Golden bricks Mario can shoot into coins with a fire flower. These are similar to the frozen coin blocks except they're not slick. Golden Plains Overworld Screen Scrolling Level 5-9 World 6: Piranha Forest (10 Levels, 3 Castles, Airship) Level 6-1 All-Bricks Level 6-3 Forest Maze, Level 6-9 Piranha Forest Overworld I'll keep Worlds 7 and 8 for those willing to play through the game! Worlds 1 through 7 are done but they still need to be polished. I'm starting on World 8. The Club Games are nothing more than bonus levels (much like the Switch Palaces in Super Mario World) with a prize at the end. I plan to release this before the new year. If enough people are interested, I may take the time to create a demo. In the meantime, let me know your thoughts and/or suggestions! Thank you! Alan Jacobs |

Well, I want to let people know this is a continuation of Super Mario Bros. 3 without calling it Mario 4 or 3.5 or anything like that. Super Mario Raccoon is based off of the Raccoon Mario power-up. I think it gets the point across while still sounding somewhat original.
I'll play around with it. I won't use a custom palette tool unless I absolutely have to. Chances are I'll stick with what the game offers.
The NES version includes clouds in shape of power ups in the game (Mushroom, Flower, Star). I thought it would be fitting to use the leaf graphics to create the background for the forest. The leaves are part of the background and nothing more in that picture. Thanks for the feedback, guys! I'm hoping to wrap this thing up sooner than later. |

Hello all!!
After wasting so much time searching on FCEUXD, I'm out of options. It's a long shot but I'll ask in case anyone has it in their notes..... Does anyone know how to change the palette on the upside down piranha plants? Preferably the stem? I'd like to change it from green to red. Any help is appreciated. A full SMB3 hack is on the way soon. Thanks in advance.... |

@Insectduel- Thanks, the palette quad. I'd like to keep the head the same color but have a red stem instead of a green one. Typically there should be an address where I can cycle between four color options: the Dark Red, Green (Blue for castle enemies), Red and Orange. |

In case you missed it under ROM Hacking Related Releases, here is a link to the completed hack. I hope you enjoy!
Super Mario Bros. 3: The New Journey. After working on this project for over 4 years, I'm finally comfortable enough to give a release date (November 25, 2016) which, you have my word, will not be delayed or changed. I've always dreamed of creating a complete Mario game since I was a small child and now it's becoming reality. This is a complete hack of SMB3. I created 8 brand new worlds, each with its own theme and complete with full levels, custom overworld music, and graphics created by yours truly. I tried to create the new graphics to fit into the original game. A New Club Game can be found on the overworld. It's an extra bonus stage, much like the switch palaces in SMW with a treasure chest at the end. It's intended to be a Super Mario Bros 3 continuation. I consider myself a conservative hacker. My goal is to stay true to the SMB3 game while creating new and intriguing worlds to explore. I hope you guys like it! Title Screen World 1 Overworld: Fungi Marsh World 1, Level 4 World 1 Palace: All kings and creatures are different!! World 2: Native Ruins Overworld World 2, Level 1 World 2, Temple 1: Star (Shuriken) Bro!! A modified version of the Boomerang Bro! World 3: Crystal Canyon Overworld World 3, Level 1 World 4: Bass Lake Overworld World 4, Level 1 World 4, Level 4 World 5 Overworld: Golden Plains World 5, Level 5: Golden Bricks that Mario can shoot into coins. World 5 Hammer Bros. Battle World 6 Overworld: Piranha Forest World 6, Level 1 World 6, Level 7. Worlds 7 and 8 are for those who want to play through the game!! Brief history behind the game. After I completed Cinnamon Hills (My SMW Hack) I went to work on an SMB3 NES style game on an SMW ROM. I went pretty far with it, about four worlds (unpolished) and I converted all SMB3 NES graphics to the SMW ROM. In 2013, I realized that I went a bit over my head with the project, mostly the music, and decided to scratch it and explore SMB3 Workshop and create the game using the SMB3 ROM. I converted many levels and ideas from that previous project into this one. I created a rough rendering of the first 6 worlds on April, 2013 and my progress has been at a crawl for a long time. All 8 worlds were finished in late 2015 and I've been doing a lot of polishing ever since. Have experience being a tester or know someone? Particularly with SMB3? I could use some input to make the game better! Any thoughts or suggestions? Let me know! Thanks. |

Posted by Googie Never thought to change the text on the status bar. I wanted the game to feel like the original but I do understand how it can be bland. I'll consider it for sure. Posted by Termingamer2-JD I know World 4 has a unique palette but like you said, I wanted to add a bit of character. The piranha plants have red stems (they don't hide when Mario is near.) That may be subject to change. Thanks for the comments!!! Can't wait to finish this! |

Posted by Quick Curly Thank you for the compliments, Quick Curly! I'm happy you're a fan! This is basically the same project as Super Mario Raccoon but I decided to change the name. This project improved dramatically since that last posting several years ago. Currently working with Mari42 to make this even better! More updates will arrive! |

I found the addresses to change the piranha plant stem palette quads in case anyone is interested. Each address is half the stem.
Upright piranha stems: 0x00a723 0x00a728 Upside down piranha stems: 0x00a744 0x00a73f -Insectduel: Very interesting stuff you're working on! And very neat! Keep us updated. |

This is a Super Mario Bros. 3 hack with 8 brand new worlds for Mario and Luigi to explore. Each world has its own unique theme with custom overworld music, graphics and redesigned levels. Thank you to everyone who helped me out through my own journey finishing this project! I couldn't do it without you all! Let me know what you think! I hope you enjoy! Good Luck! Title Screen World 1 Overworld: Fungi Marsh World 1, Level 4 World 1 Palace: All kings and creatures are different!! I feel my work on this project has paid off by reading your compliments, so thank you very much.
Posted by Dracula X I always envisioned this hack to be the 'SMB2J' of SMB3. Same gameplay, controls, etc. with different graphics here and there. I think it's cool you mentioned that game! Posted by DurfarC I'm relieved to hear this. It was not easy for me to judge the difficulty when I had to test these levels on a non-stop basis. This project was initially going to be much harder but I decided to tone down the difficulty because I wanted more people to enjoy it. You're not the only one to use continues in the beginning of the game though it does make me think if the game is still too hard. It will only get harder so my advice is to take advantage of the SMB3 tricks (Run and jump for 3 stars and the end of the levels, access coin ships, etc.) Good find on the whistle! The coin blocks probably had something there at one time in an earlier version of the level but I might have moved the power-ups around later on. Happy you're enjoying it and good luck to you. Posted by Mnoel02 You have a great day as well. Thank you. |

Posted by DurfarC Thanks for the heads up! Considering this is the only one discovered so far, I say I did pretty well. Will be fixed with v1.1. Posted by DurfarC My testers also brought this up with the same solution. I'm against doing this for a couple reasons. 1) I believe putting coins as a hint would be too obvious. and 2) The original SMB3 World 7 Abandoned fortress is a good example of a hidden exit without using coins or anything else to give a hint. If you continued even without a p-wing, I'm sure you would have figured it out. Though I won't use coins, I will, however, make Raccoon Mario easier to access and a better platform for Mario to fly in v1.1. Thanks for the input! |

Good luck to you, DurfarC!
Version 1.1 will include the following: -Fix World 8 Fortress Pipe bug. -World 8-1 'Daylight' will have enemies (as was originally intended but was an oversight when I released 1.0) -New King's Message for Frog Mario. (I've altered the others but overlooked the Frog Suit.) -I need to give credit to Yy for YYCHR. I need input for version 1.2. Here's what I have in mind: The game itself is fairly difficult, so I'm going to create two patches in v1.2. One patch will be the current version of the game (v1.1) while the other patch will be a major overhaul on the level designs to make the game much easier for everyone to play. Basically, the two patches will be an 'Easy' version and the other a 'Hard' version. All the things I've discussed with DurfarC on this thread and other suggestions will fall on the 'Easy Version.' That's what I'm leaning toward right now. Version 1.1 will be released this weekend. |

Something interesting I found in the ROM during my adventures with 'A New Journey'
ROM Address 0x0109F9: If you change this from '06' to any other number, for example, '03,' you can make Frog Mario Run!! And he still keeps his ability to swim fast! I was contemplating the idea to somehow create this into a whole new power-up but there's one minor flaw: He cannot duck. I'm sure this is because Frog Mario was never programmed in the game to do so. If someone can make him duck, we may have the easiest new power-up to accomplish with little ASM required. Cool stuff. Thought I'd share! |

Quick Curly gave some ROM Addresses in this page halfway down:
General SMB3 Hacking Thread I believe you need to change two addresses, one for the overworld music and the other when arriving from Warp Zone. Both are listed. If I remember correctly, the warp zone address also effects the music when restarting from game over, so both must be changed. You need a hex editor to do it. For anything else SMB3, stick with that forum. You'll get more help that way. If you have time, read through as much of that thread as you can. A lot of neat stuff is buried there and it could answer more of your questions. Good luck. |
