Well, not a hack as such but it is related to a classic hack. I made an NES style label for the New Strange Mario Bros basically with the idea of "what if this had been made in the mid-80's". I thought that I'd post it here to see what anyone thought.

How beautifully nostalgic though I'd personally change the "Made in Japan".

Less accurate in regards to the actual NES cases, though more accurate as far as the hack itself goes.

Actually, I still have my Super Mario Bros cart from 1985 and it has the "Made in Japan" mark on it. However, looking online after seeing your comment I see that the pictures uploaded there do not have the "Made iN Japan" mark. That makes me wonder if the original carts were made in Japan because they were unsure of how the NES would play in American markets so instead of setting up a manufacturing base here they made some Nintendos and carts and shipped them here and when sales took off they actually started making games in the US.

Otherwise I have no explanation for why the images online do not show the "Made in Japan" but my cart clearly does. If anyone wants to see, I can scan and upload it to photobucket when I get home for all to see.

Wasn't the Strange series by Acmlm?

Yes, that's why I thought that it would be fitting to post this on ACMLM's board.

New graphics would've been nice rather seeing old classic graphics.

I think that you may be familiar with the "old" versions of the New Strange Mario Bros. There seem to have been several revisions made to it starting in 1999 and ending in 2001. I've tried playing some of the older versions and the graphics were always buggy on the emulator. I played the version dated 05-05-2001 and that one utilizes the regular Super Mario Bros graphics but otherwise has the Strange Mario Bros play control. I'm assuming that ACMLM must have had problems getting his graphics to work and just revised that part of his hack to keep the buggy graphics from being a problem on his game. That's just my conjecture though. People on this board may have more understanding of the history of the game and what ACMLM did with it.

Here's the link to the webpage for the version that I'm talking about:

Hi, I'm new here! I'm a really old school gamer who never graduated from the NES but I hadn't played it in years. Recently though, I wanted to show my wife and daughter what the NES is all about (my daughter is a toddler and my wife was never allowed to have video games) so I broke out the old system and started getting a lot of used games - basically all the games that I wanted to play as a kid but either never had or only borrowed for a while from friends.

Now I own 120+ games and I just learned about the wonderful world of Rom Hacking and would like to learn the art. Currently I'm playing The New Strange Mario Bros by ACMLM and an internet search later, I found this board.

For now I want to try my hands at a few Mario hacks to see what people have been able to do with the game before creating my own hack. After doing a well hacked game like Mario, I'd like to try my hand at something like Star Voyager and see if I can change it to a somewhat decent game that people might actually want to play.

Hopefully you'll see me around!

Here's a link to my very high-res scan of my version of the game label which was bought in 1985. Yet I have seen the pictures online that don't show "Made in Japan" so I think that it has to just be this first batch that was made this way.

Well I had this under the wrong thread before but I think that this is where it belongs:

I've been playing a lot of the New Strange Mario Bros lately and was wondering what happened to ACMLM. I saw something online that seemed to describe him in the past tense. Is he still involved in hacking or with this site or has he dropped out of exposure? I'd love to see what else he has worked on. If he's still around is he contactable through this board or any other?

I was wondering if anyone here could tell me about where these bugs stem from in the code (or may stem from). Eventually I'd like to try my hand at fixing these bugs. (Once I've gained some experience at hacking) All of these are random and don't appear to happen at any one point consistently. Here's what I see:

1.) Sprites for bad guys appear half-formed. You can kill them like normal and then the sprite changes its appearance to normal but unless you do that, the sprite appears deformed and is unable to move.

2.) When bowser is breathing fire, from offscreen sometimes the fireball will actually appear in a column of five fireballs all lined up from top to bottom. They flicker though as if they aren't completely substantial but they can cause damage.

3.) Sometimes bowser is messed up. The top half of his sprite will appear in the normal location but the bottom half may appear anywhere else in the level.

4.) Sometimes I take damage even when I'm nowhere near either a fireball or a fire chain. It always seems to happen if I'm above the thing in question. For instance, one of the worlds is an underwater world with fire chains. The chain is in the lower half of the screen and is the normal length but if I swim all of the way to the top and try to swim over it, it does damage to me. In other instances, I'm running along the top of the screen on a castle level and a fireball from Boswer flies out below and I take damage as if I were in the fireball's path.

PM me if you need more details. I'm really curious to know why all of this happens.

My wife and I just made a label for Dragoon X Omega, a Dragon Warrior hack. Let me know what you think.

Thank you all for the criticism. I was also going to point out that the hack was finished some time ago.

Also try and keep in mind that when reduced to NES label size a lot of these issues are more difficult to see.

Also regarding the text, my idea was to mirror the style of the Dragon Warrior label as much as possible which is where the text is there and why it is the way that it is.

Now as for making the character blend in better with the background and working on the shading I will take to heart and see what I can do.

More comments are appreciated if forthcoming.

Thanks!

Does anyone know of any other good hacks for the original Dragon Warrior besides Dragoon X Omega? If you know of more than one, which do you think is best?
