Changed.

That explains why Spikeman was banned, I was wondering at first until I saw this. At least you were able to fix a hole. Did he do any damage?

He got every single person on this forum's MD5 hash, does that count?

baka! I have having to change my pass...especially to places like this, where I don't need a complicated one (or a hard to remember one). Really, what's the damn point about someone stealing a pass from a message board. How petty can you be...a message board of all places.

I was wondering if he actually hacked any accounts or did anything like close threads or ban people. Clearly he had the potential to with those passwords, right?

Likely, he would.

I'd be one of the accounts he'd ignore though. Maybe.

@Anya: And if that same person has the same password in his email, PayPal, myspace, youtube, ebay, bank account, etc.?

Not so petty now, huh?

Your only rela problem with other areas is if your password is insecure (e.g. "mypass").

Longer passwors (e.g., "th1sis!password" -- yes) are far more secure and probably won't need changing if all they got was a MD5 hash.

Bah, now I'll have to remember a new password. Oh well, good thing he got caught before he did more damage.

That would be a silly person. The best route with any pass is a mix of numbers and letters, and if possible, symbols.

Or a person that doesn't want to memorize a kajillion passwords.

I do write mine down, which is fine because I live alone and nobody would see them. They're always at least random letters if not random letters/numbers/symbols, and important passwords are always unique (E-mail, bank, etc.)

My parents used to use an English word as their password, and then they wondered why they got hax0red. This was in like 1997 though. Once I saw a list of the passwords on the high school student accounts, and almost all of them were just like their first name, a single word, their username, or any of the above with an obvious number sequence (such as 123) appended.

Yeah, I've seen the passwords people used in online games at school, and even the computers at work, and they tended to be terrible. Administrators using "123456" as a password.

I rarely use the same password twice, only for unimportant things. I keep a list of which password goes with which account in an encrypted file.

I'd change it anyway. I recall on the old board a hash was enough to get in some places, and they could crack it given enough time/CPU power.

Yeah, but it takes a long time to crack a GOOD password. (And I mean, many days/weeks long)

And again, Acmlm doesn't realize the importance of making good SQL queries... just because you can leave out the '' and ``s doesn't mean it's a good idea, ever

Luckily, my password isn't a real word, or really anything resembling a real word. I changed it anyway, though.
