One can only imagine how crazy this is going to make security in educational institutions... I mean, think about how it was fifteen years ago as compared to now. With all that's happening, like Columbine, and this... what's next with security?
I'm worried about the safety of my future children. |

Posted by Mystery Gourmet Posted by blackhole89 Seems like blackhole won his bet. Thompson is a media whore. Best way is to ignore him, or to make fun of him. It's interesting to note that there's lots of reports how gaming is actually good for you lately ironically... (in moderate amounts, that is). It's interesting to note that some organizations who used to support him have turned their back against him, as some of his methods were a bit excessive. I admit, I really hate when someone abuses a horrible event for his own gains. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Jack Thompson is good for gamers. He makes people take the whole anti-game thing much less seriously.
That article had some interesting quotes. That's right, it's because of that shooting that video games exist! It's Fox News, who cares? Blackhole: Watch them install Duke Nukem on his computer and blame it. Seriously, I wouldn't doubt it. And yeah, school shootings are terrible. |

Posted by Trapster would they blame that on video games? :p personally, 30-some dead? who cares. I'm not going to get into this, though. I'm extremely pissed off about it, however, because now I'm going to hear about it from everyone I know and they're all going to expect me to care. whatever ____________________ |

Hell, kill him with a video game. Bash him over the head with a PS3 or something. The irony would be awesome.
But that'd mean buying a PS3. |

Speaking of trolls, Fred Phelps and His Westboro Baptist Church already announced they're picketing the funerals. Is it wrong I hope they all show up and get the living shit kicked out of them? |

Posted by NSNickPosted by drjayphd Because God hates America for accepting the gays. Remember... troll. Connecticut's mulling over a bill restricting protests at military funerals specifically because they'd protest at them. I think it's been 10 or 15 states that have already passed such legislation. They're just out for attention. |

Posted by XkeeperExactly what I meant when I posted. The pathetic mass media determines which deaths are "important" and which aren't, and the beauty of it is the people slurp this shit up. Plus it adds to the Fear-o-meter with the overblown coverage... when it is still EXTREMELY unlikely that this kind of shit will happen to any one person or their children in a lifetime. Also, giving media coverage like this glorifies the whole ordeal, adding incentives for those shooters who decide to make a quick name for themselves in a horrific incident like this.Posted by setzyeah, when you consider a few hundred people die of starvation/negligence all over the world every minute, 30 people become kind of minisculePosted by Trapster The hypocrisy and idiocy of it all makes me want to vomit. ____________________ |

Obviously, not just because you're in a developed country (hiya homeless and impoverished!), but because of that, people tend to get numb, because "oh, it can't happen to me". You generally have no say about some guy chaining your building's doors shut and blowing you away. Thus, it gets more play than 30 people starving to death today. The one thing that bothers me about the copycat fame-seeking is that, well, you generally end up dead if you're a shooter. Fame doesn't do you a whole hell of a lot of good then, especially if it's because you murdered a bunch of people. As for the celebrity deaths... well, people are morons. |

Which reminds me of a general American attitude that is oft-encountered; the lack of realization that there are more people outside the United States than there are inside it. An American life is no more important than one of any other nationality, under any circumstances. If life is such a beautiful thing, then it should be observed equally for all people, and not just those that carry a "good story" with them. If this is not possible, then I think it's best to not try and make it seem that one life is worth more than the next by extravagant media attention in any cases.
Also, Americans tend to think that everyone should have/has equality of opportunity (haha wrong) and that equality of condition is just a simple product of how hard one works... not even in our own country is this true. The poor find it increasingly difficult to move vertically in the hierarchy, and the rich are able to pass on wealth after death and perpetuate the cycle very easily. It's ironic how the success stories of those few who actually get out of squalor are that which help shield the rich from helping the poor the most and help perpetuate ignorance. All in all, the starving and diseased people of the world, dying slowly and experiencing what I can only imagine as exceedingly painful deaths (I'm thinking specifically of Africa) are much more often than not in that situation due to circumstance, nothing more... and yet, that does not seem to be important. The important thing is that these 30 or so people were shot, in this country, and in a similar incident to another which is one of the building blocks of that large pillar of fear that each American takes on from listening to the media. It is that which captivates the American audience which takes precedence, hence why I feel sickened that this is accepted as perfectly fine behavior, and even encouraged. ____________________ |

Wow, the idiots (NOT you guys) are out in force today, huh?
Thompson: I'm not surprised but he's on the verge of losing his license anyways and that will be a happy day. Phelps: Maybe he should do some research; you know, on the off-chance that NONE of the victims were homosexuals? If I was part of one of the victims' families, I wouldn't want that at all. Casts another shadow over the day. I only found out about this at work because I was loading up IE to access our credit report site and the home page was MSN.com. |

I would certainly be afraid to send any children I had to college. This is insane! It's unfortunate the criminal justice system can't try people who already commited suicide. I hope the best for the victims' families. |

Wait wait, isn't is the same guys who said that god hates Sweden for the tsunami affecting lots of Swedes? You know, there was a tsunami a few years ago in a popular Swedish resort place. I do say it was tasteless, but it actually made me laugh instead as the webpage is only silly (I honestly thought it was satire at first) and only strengthens my beliefs. (*cough* and *cough*)
In other words, if Westboro Baptist Church is going to picket the funerals, it probably will only backfire in the public view. :/ I feel really sorry for the relatives and what they're going through because of all this unwanted attention they're getting now... ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

I can't believe the school didn't go into lockdown. There's a guy with two guns on your campus, and you're gonna trust that he's not going to do anything else now that his ex is dead? COME ON. They could have prevented a lot of tragedy yesterday.
My cousin graduated from V Tech last year, thankfully... I would have been freaking out yesterday even more than I already was. What shocks me the most about this is that the shooter actually stopped the shooting to reload his guns, and nobody attempted to... I dunno, try and disarm him when the guns were unloaded. Not to say that they're cowardly, I definitely would have stayed hidden as well... I just would have expected some hero to emerge. I do agree that this isn't the worst thing happening in the world right now. Far from it. But it's still very sad and the whole thing shouldn't be ignored just because the number of deaths is smaller than deaths elsewhere. In Danielleland nobody would die innocently. |

I'm surprised that the events unfolded how they did too. I can't honestly say that I wouldn't have been terrified though.
Certainly odd that this still occurs. |
