I have never played a Phantasy Star game and would like to do so. I am assuming that the games do not need to be played in order and therefore would like to know which is the best to play. This only includes I through IV. I am eager to hear your thoughts. |

If you're talking emulated, I'd definitely suggest using one of the retranslation patches... even though I think they're only available for 1 and 2 for now. Those games got rather... devastated by the 4-letter limit for names (Motavia/Motabia->Mota, for instance).
Never played much of them myself, so I can't say much more on the subject. Ehh, what the hey. I'd suggest 2, if for no other reason than that it strikes me as amusing. Definitely seems to have the whole "futuristic" thing in spades. 3 has the distinct feature of branching storyplots based on who you marry, though. Pretty sure that's rather unique in the world of RPGs, although it's apparently still considered the weakest in the series. PS1 has 3D dungeons. Very interesting for a game as old as Final Fantasy. I've actually had the urge recently to go and play through one or two of the games myself, but haven't gotten around to it yet. 2 would probably be the one I did first, for what that means. |

You should definitely make an attempt to play through all of them, in order, if possible. I feel that 3 was the best of them, though, in spite of what Skreeny is saying. I don't know why, but I just enjoy it so much. Other than that, just try them. I feel that it trumps most other RPGs in nearly every stat. ____________________ My current complication: Girl's name who gets no more than 10 minutes of screen time in the actual game. |

Most folks consider 3 to be the series's black sheep. None of them really need to be played to understand the others, but there are a fair few references to older games in the newer ones, so you're missing out if you don't at least have a cursory familiarity with the events of prior Phantasy Star titles.
Personally, my experience has been that PS1 is fairly well balanced and decently fun, PS2 has an overemphasis on level grinding and is alright, PS3 has an _extreme_ overemphasis on level grinding and is rather poor, and PS4 is a lot more focused on the story, with a near-perfect balance between experience/money acquisition and the progression of the plot, and is probably the strongest in the series. |

Try to play them in the correct order if you can. Much like Breath of Fire and Dragon Quest, there are plot elements that build on each other even though hundreds of years pass between each game (also like Breath of Fire, the translations are shitactular, so unless you're using the aforementioned retranslation patchs, a reference guide will come in handy. The translators tended to ignore the fact that certain things may appear in multiple games, and thus don't bother investigating if this is the case, and if so, what name was used in the translation of those games).
And yes, the games are all good. Besides Dragon Quest, I feel this is the greatest japanese RPG series out there, and it's really too bad the series turned into this Online RPG crap rather than continuing as real games. Oh, and PS1 features some incredibly amazing 3D for a Master System game. Impressed the hell out of me the first time I saw it. |

Ah yes, the first game, much like Dragon Quest 2, is very oriented about collectiong and piecing together various clues, and there are a couple spots where it's easy to become horribly stuck for quite a while. Just a warning, in case you don't like that type of adventuring. |

I only played Phantasy Star II. I was obsessed with the game way back in 6th grade. Its vision of the future struck me as awesomely nifty (minus all the unpleasant aspects of the story, of course) and inspired me to write some doofy story that went on for about a hundred pages and never got finished. I liked the characters, and the gameplay was engaging. The level grinding didn't bother me much, and I really appreciated the equipment that cast magic. (I abused the hell out of the Storm Gear and Colorscarf...believe me.)
The game and console belonged to my cousin. I got up to the point where I was leveling for the final boss, and then my cousin sold his Genesis collection before I could finish. Sigh. I've been meaning to play through PSII again on an emulator. Even though the character designs now looks obviously late '80s to me (Rolf's headband and poofy spiky bangs, Anna's permed-looking mullet, etc.), the "cool factor" of the overall aesthetic still remains. I was all psyched to find a good MIDI rendition of the Dezo town music. |

Cool. I think when I get a DS, I'll put those games on a DS Xtreme. Thanks for all the info guys, I'll let you know what I think of them. |
