Super Pitfall is being improved by nesrocks over at romhacking.net. He has done a lot of improvements and work, including better graphics and sprites, bug fixes, a second quest, and a new HUD. All that is needed to make this improved version to be perfect is better music, which nesrocks doesnt know how to do. I came on here in hopes that maybe I can help him find someone who is willing to donate his or her time to help him with this. Here is a link to the topic on romhacking.net.

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,21768.0.html

Also, here are a few pics of what he has done so far.

Looking good.
If it's finished, please make sure that James Rolfe plays this improved version, since he already played the original version as the AVGN and I want to see his reactions to the improvements.

Agreed with both MathUser and Trinitronity, this hack looks excellent.

I haven't posted in the main project thread, but I've kept up with it regularly, and it's amazing considering everything that has already been accomplished with bringing brand new life to this game. Simply put, it's beautiful and incredible.

I wish that I had musical skill. Hopefully someone somewhere will be able and willing to help out in that department. Personally, I feel that the project is more likely to be seen through Romhacking.net than over here though, but it definitely doesn't hurt to spread the word.

This project as a whole will definitely be a masterpiece, and well worth any amount of wait time.

Ohhhh holy moly! What a beautiful looking version! When I was a small child, my father had the Tandy Color Computer 3, and he bought Super Pitfall from a local Radio Shack. I played the shit out of this game! A few years later a friend of mine had it for his NES, I flipped my shit cause I'm like, no way that's for coco too, I want it! So he sold the nes version to my dad for $20 haha! I also remember my mother jotting down on her own piece of paper, where all the hidden guns and icons were, where you had to jump at certain point to make them appear, ahh this game was so much fun.

Anyway enough nostalgic ramblings from this fan. I am just utterly impressed with the graphic usage, I don't care if it's hand drawn, or used gfx from other titles, it works! It makes the caves look more fuller and vibrant. And tat title screen is fantastic as well!

Bravo, kudos, we'll done, it's so great to see this port get such a tremendous face-lift!

Glad you guys like it!

I have made a website/blog to talk about my projects. So far it only has some posts about this hack http://nesrocks.com/

infidelity: the graphics are 100% hand drawn for this hack. there has been constant feedback from the RHDN community and some friends of mine. It is my first pixel art project, aside from an unfinished duck hunt hack I was making. I have done all the programming and graphics myself.

I have at some point applied your mapper convert patch for I don't know what reason and kept improving the hack on that mmc3 converted rom. I later detected a bug and identified that the bug was on the mapper conversion, so I reverted it back to unrom. I've sent you a PM on RHDN talking about it! I have no idea if it's a simple fix, but since I wasn't using any mmc3 specific feature I just decided to keep it clean. To be clear, I don't think your conversion is buggy, but this game is very badly programmed and it must have depended on something that changed when the mapper was converted. I'm pretty sure a lot of things work due to the game's programmer's luck.

This is kinda what I wanted to do in my Super Mario land hack. Someone wound up doing it much better than me tho. So many people tried to do this for SMB1 but I never seen anything on this level.

Just wondering MathUser if you could and are willing to help in this area. Gotta agree with your post, people have tried to improve SMB1 but not as good or dedicated as this. I don't know how long nesrocks has been in rom hacking but his improvements look amazing

Also nesrocks, nice website

I never composed a new song for a game before. But I see that he is already getting 2 new songs anyway.

Ah, okay.
I was simply wondering if you were able to add to the hack.

I could still use help with the game's controls, though! If someone could fix it I'd include the fix in the hack. Just start the game and start spinning the d-pad around and you'll see what I mean. I think that if left or right are being pressed those should have priority, but harry loves to duck or stand on the tips of his toes instead of walking. Such a lazy hero. This is specially annoying after ducking intentionally or after exiting ladders that touch the ground.

Termingamer2-JD: this is my first hack. I have an unfinished duck hunt hack that is mostly just graphics, and I did a silly contra hack where I changed the texts. That was all this year. I come from a tool-assisted speedruns background (some may know me from the FODA alias). I am also a professional 3d artist (for games mostly) with 12 years experience. It is mostly experience on the brazilian gaming market, which has only just recently produced some good quality games, so I'm not sure how much of that experience counts hehe. This is also my first solo project, so there's that. I guess I got tired of arguing "no! games are made this way!" and just decided to go solo and do it.

Good job, it's nice to do things just by yourself, independently and solely at your own pace.
(Also your username is literally the best way to describe the NES.)

Oooh, pretty.

What's the deal with the spooky area to the left of the starting area? There is something that looks like an NPC in the skull room in its centre, but I couldn't figure out how to interact with it so far.

Are you talking about the girl? If yes, then you need to collect all four card symbols first before you can interact with her. After that, drop on the car from above in order to complete the game.
At least, that would be the case in the original version...where there was no car, but the check for game completition was still there.
