I'm just wondering, out of all ROM hacks which are your favourites and why?

If you want you can give specific games for your favourites, not just one, because what's one thing without variety on another?

I don't know myself. I like any rom hack that has had thought put into it and dedicated to, and I've played a ton of SMW hacks, I never remember the names of hacks too easily considering I have about a million in my snes goodset.

I haven't played too many, mostly just The Second Reality Project and Mario's Keytastrophe, and out of those I'd definitely have to say Keytastrophe.

I'm also playing Golden Yoshi's "SMW2+", and that's really good, though I haven't played it in a while because I got stuck on one of the early castle stages.

Well, my two favorite hacks are probably Rockman 4: Minus Infinity and Sonic Classic Heroes.

Rockman 4: Minus Infinity is a really impressive work of ASM, the bosses are very different, and the game is just overall amazing. I love the Aqua Devil in Cossack's Castle, as well as the part where you can ride vehicles in Wily Castle 1.

Sonic Classic Heroes is really great, too. It ports all the levels from Sonic 1 into Sonic 2 perfectly. Elemental shields from Sonic 3 are added, and there are two different sets of Chaos Emeralds to collect. The best part however, is that you can have Sonic, Tails, AND Knuckles on the screen at the same time and switch characters by pressing A. It makes the game interesting as you can go through the levels any way you want, and certain bonuses have been added that can be reached by Tails and Knuckles. Also, Team Chaotix has been ported from Chaotix for the 32X, so you can play as them too, which has a different feel than Team Sonic.

Anyways, both hacks are really good, I would suggest them to anybody.

Well, I have too many favourites. RM4MI is already taken soo...

Rockman 3 Claw is a decent hack in my opinion. Actually, all the games in the Claw hack series. It/they might not be the best ones out there, but I like them.

Hmmm... The S Factor: Sonia and Silver.
A very polished, but not perfect ROM-hack of Sonic 1, which introduces (not really introduces but...) Silver, Psycho and time-traveller from the future, and Sonia, Sonic's sister from Sonic Underground, as the main protagonists. Eggman Nega, Eggman’s evil descendant from Silver's time period, is the antagonist. The soundtrack is really nice, the level design is good, but sometimes can be unfair. Scourge was once available as a third, secret playable character, but was removed in the last update. Aquaslash claims that he did this because of possible bugs and that the character was not fully tested, but it's possible he did it because 'Archie Comics vs Penders' happened. But that's another story.
This game was the winner of the Hidden Palace Trophy, the 1st place in the Sonic Hacking Contest 2013. Unfortunately, it didn't enter SHC2014. Note that this game is not-a finished yet, it is still under development. There will be more unlockable characters later, Blaze is actually playable with a secret code, but she is basically a purple Sonic most of the time.

I rarely play Mario and Metroid games. I mean... rarely... and I only played SMB1, SM3 and the first Metroid game before.
Extra Mario Bros is a quite nice mix of the two games. It uses hidden keys to unlock new areas, uses a map system similar to Metroid's... It's basically a 'Marioid' game.

There are some honorable mentions too:
MegaMan Forever - Everyone knows why.
Metal Sonic Hyperdrive - Metal Sonic. Creative Level design. New artwork. Yu Yu Hakusho title theme?... Really? O.o Of course, there are much better hacks out there, but I really like this one.
Sonic Boom - really short, annoyingly hard and unfair sometimes, but is a great game. And there's a lot of Mega Man X themes in the Sound Test mode you might want to hear.
Super Mario Bros XXXX - Not a single X less, duh! It's fun, challenging and has a lot of replay value!

You can have too many favourites, because they may be favourites in different aspects, like for its time, the music and gameplay, its ASM or whatever...

That's why I stated that you can select as many as you like for your favourite ROM hacks, even if they're not your favourite overall - they could be your favourite in any format (unless you're saying 'favourite worst hack' which is stupid).

ROM hacks are original creations and should not be looked down onto by the big companies, rather the best ones should be an inspiration...

BMF54123's Super Mario Odyssey, even though it was only a two-world demo or so, was the best thing to happen during my time in terms of some weighted combination of polish, gameplay and technical achievement. I also second Zieldak's mention of Extra Mario Bros.

Purely in terms of technical achievement, Kichikuou Mario ("brute king mario", referencing some 2ch meme I never got to the bottom of) is probably the best I can think of, with its set of authentically reimplemented Kirby/Dragonquest/? bosses, and for sheer entertainment value, the VIP MIX group hacks from 2ch's alaska board deserve an honourable mention (the third one in particular).

Personally is Super Demo World the Legend Continues and I recently brought this game on a reproduction cartridge. It's always a dream to play the game on a real SNES console.

Actually heel has a point.

I'm pretty sure that it's illegal to make a reproduction cart of a free ROM hack and sell it on, unless you get permission from the creator (although the dipsticks at the Law think ROM hacks are illegal, when it's only the ROM itself).

But, to play it 100% accurately (bsnes/higan) is a pain in the arse if you don't have a 3GhZ processor, so it is easier to do it on the actual hardware, and an actual controller is far more fun to play it with than a keyboard right?

So this goes two ways.

Aaaaaaaaaand you completely missed my point.

I know that MM4MI and MM2NC are completed.
I was talking about MM6Innocent and MM6Skype, because there is absolutely no news about those two being cancelled.

Those hacks were indeed cancelled. Ririka leaked them on 2ch. And both got cancelled. And won't be continued either.

If they wont be continued anyway, can I please have those hacks then? It would be such a waste for those two games to never see the light of day, you know.

Unfortunately, I don't think we should share any existing roms or ips patches of RM6Innocent or Skype. Doing so would insult the creators even more. Even ROCKMAN2IPS and RHDN took them down. I'm not sure if RM2IPS even has uploaded it after the leak... You can however, check some YT videos, for example Shinryu's walkthrough. Of course, if someone sends you an ips or a zipped rom or whatever, without anyone knowing, that's another story.

EDIT: But I did some searching. There are two ips patches flying around in the clouds. It's actually 'something' right? So Google them, this 'give me ips' situation is not that 'awful'. You might want to 'box' them.

Thanks. I managed to find them.
Also, I found out that I sadly cannot edit any Rockman 6 hack or even the original unmodified Rockman 6, because MegaFLE X ends up crashing whenever I try to open a Rockman 6 ROM, no matter if patched/edited or not.
The error:

Run-time error '6':

Overflow

And I have no idea how I can possibly fix that problem.

Do not even try editing these hacks... And you can edit the offsets set in megafle.dat to fix this, but...

Actually, I can't, because I don't know how.
Also, I really wanted to finish those hacks (at least in terms of level designs), since the original creators wont because of Based Ririka.
Likewise, I also want to finish MegaMan Forever at least in terms of level designs, but sadly, that wont work on MegaFLE X either.

Borderline: If you don't want to finish your game, at least give other people the possibility to finish it for you. That way, it's a win-win situation for everyone!
...well, for everyone except people who hate videogames, of course.

Yes, but if the creators wanted someone to finish their hacks, they wouldn't have removed the games from everywhere, and most likely would've shared some source code or something. They didn't, so...
