I felt like converting Metroid to mapper MMC5. Metroid had no free space in the hardwired bank, so I had no choice but to expand the ROM.

Here's the patch:

Does this patch include SRAM saving?

Not to mention having plenty of space for a proper menu and map as well as the already existing hacks that make the game so much more awesome.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw this was overhauling the level structure so that people no longer have to use repeated room blocks.

RetroRain, are you planning on starting a Metroid project other than the mapper conversion? I'd certainly be interested in seeing another quality Metroid hack in the works, there aren't too many high quality M1 hacks out there.

Me and Snarfblam have been able to pull off everything mentioned in Inccubus's post with our MMC3 Metroid project "Rogue Dawn". We're in the last 15% of development I'd say, definitely a 2015 release. Optomon is working on a custom sound track for the project.

With as much as we've been able to pull off under MMC3, I'd love to see what you're able to do with MMC5.

I gotta be honest with you guys.

No, I don't plan on doing anything with Metroid. I just felt like upgrading the mapper for the game. That's all. And to ShaneM, no, there is no SRAM feature in this patch. Somebody already made a SRAM hack for Metroid.

I haven't really been working on my ROM hack projects. Other than real life things, I feel very overwhelmed when doing work on hacks. I have ideas for hacks, and things that I would like to do. But sometimes the workload is just too much, and I'm not always motivated to work on them.

I can be motivated to work on a hack, and then the next day, have no interest in it at all.

For instance, SMB2 Special Edition and Megaman DX have been on ice, and I don't know when, or if, I will ever get back to them. Not much work has been done on either one.

It is a combination of real life things, lack of motivation, and just not having that drive I need to get the work done on my hacks.

That's why I did the Metroid mapper conversion. I just wanted to do something simple that I knew I could finish in a relatively short time. Mapper conversions for the NES are actually pretty easy to do.

So I know there are some people that are going to be disappointed, because I gave a release date for SMB2 SE in my thread, but it just isn't going to happen. That, and it's not a good idea to make release dates to begin with. I'm learning that the hard way.

So, as far as ROM hacking goes, I'm just in a rut.

I have big ideas, cool ideas, and things that I know I can do if I put my mind to them, but sometimes that alone is not enough. And then you have the real life stuff, which really is more important, especially the money part.

Yes, ROM hacking is a hobby, but also the time spent doing that could be used to get myself to a better place, since I'm no where near my personal goals.

And as I told puzzledude, ROM hacking is something that you should do for yourself, because you want to do it. So, I apologize if I disappoint people for making hack announcements, and not following through with them. ROM hacking can be fun, but it can also be a lot of work. And when I do a project, I want quality. I accept nothing less than top quality, in my work.

So basically, that's it.

I still hang around the forums though, and see what projects people are working on. It's just interesting stuff.

@grimlock.

DAMN, I love those screenshots! :-) When do you expect that to be completed? I would definitely sit down and play through that some day.

Thanks, we should be done this year, originally we were aiming for a summer release but you know how that goes. All of the areas are constructed, Snarfblam has the ASM near complete. Optomons music is coming along well. I'm working on polishing the areas up, adding storyline elements.

We aren't too far away from our second round of play testing. If you're interested I can add you to our list of play testers. We're doing a closed non-public beta playtest, invitation only. I'm sure you would be able to offer a unique perspective since you have a considerable amount of hacking experience. We have a pretty unique and talented group of play testers contributing, we'd certainly love to get your feedback as well.

That's a great idea, I hadn't given the font much consideration.

Hmm ok then you focus on the hack, I'll pull the fonts myself from the rom and send it back in .bin file so you can transfer it to your hack.
About your screenshot that metroid statue looks awsome, is your hack going to revolve around the chozo making the metroids ?
Reason why I said that if you look at the manga on metroid data base thats how everything begin.

Thanks Mike, that would be handy.

Regarding the timeline of the hack, it takes place just before Metroid 1. The hack is designed around the background given in the Metroid 1 instruction manual. Basically it illustrates how the metroid species was discovered by a research team on planet SR388. When their ship was preparing to take a specimen from the planet to a distant research station it was attacked and ultimately the specimen fell into the hands of a pirate group who later took the specimen to planet ZEBES.

The game begins just after the research vessel is attacked high above SR388 and forced to crash land on the planet's surface. You play as Ridleys shadow agent/assassin, awaken from your hibernation sleep ordered to seek out and recover a sample of the specimen. You have no knowledge of your origins, the only human in a pirate group led by a ruthless over lord by the name of "Ridley". The only part of your past life that remains is a name "Dawn Aran". Your entire existence spanning from early childhood has been catered to mold you into the ultimate dark operative, manipulated and distorted to carry out the will of the pirate leadership.

Obviously the main character is blood related to Samus Aran. Dawn Aran was abducted from a colony by the pirate faction in the event that killed Samus's family and the rest of the colony. Dawn is thought to have perished long ago. There was never a mention of a sister in any comic series that I am aware of but it could easily be that Samus had cousins and other family members in the colony she lived in as a child.

Ultimately "Metroid - Rogue Dawn" reveals why Samus is so obsessed with eradicating the Metroid threat.... Samus's own family is directly responsible.

Anyway, that's probably more than you wanted to know. The storyline is not based on the comic series, it's designed mostly to sync up to the M1 story more or less. It's mostly finalized but it probably needs some additional fine tuning.

The graphics definitely look really good for a Metroid hack. It is perhaps the best visually-looking Metroid hack I have seen to-date.

And yes, I agree about the font. Because it is still the old font, it stands out too much. The font should be updated to match the visual quality of the game.

Very nice work on that hack guys!

Nah those fonts resemble the ones used in metal storm for the nes.
Hell most of the fonts and numbering looked better than the link.

Also at the op just finish pulling these for you and a few others niftys if you can make good use out of them.
The fonts with the back shadow give it some special love before wrapping up your hack for the public.
