Hey all, I'm making a MM3 hack, and aside from using Mega FLE X and a little bit of hex editing, I'm very new to hacking this game. I'm okay working around these limitations for my first hack, but there's a few things I'd like to be able to do and I don't know how.

The most important thing I want to do is to reorganize the weapon menu to put more useful weapons closer to buster (particularly Rush Coil), for more efficient use in a speedrun. Coil is right in the middle of the menu and hard to get to for quick jumps.

I've designed the hack in a way that Rush Jet isn't needed as well, with more emphasis on Coil and Marine, to get around how easy it is to exploit jumping on Jet to save ammo. If there's a way to remove Jet from the game, that would be ideal -- my quick n' dirty alternative is to make it use all ammo immediately, but this seems messy and it might come off as a mean trick.

Finally, I'm using Kuja Killer's most recent patch and I'd like to be able to quick-switch left with down+select and get back to buster with select+start in addition to switching right with select.

If anyone knows how to do this, I'd greatly appreciate it! There's a million other things I'd love to be able to change, but these are the things I really need for the hack to work. Thanks for any help!

Changing the order of the weapons i sadly do "not" recommend. This is exactly the very thing that zeildak is doing by re-arranging the levels on Stage Select, which makes ya have to re-arrange pretty much every single little existing thing reguarding stage order, weapons order, and so on.

It's a real major hassle, and i wouldnt wanna see another person go through that trouble again.

I personally did not do that Select+down ...Select+up ..left right whatever stuff for weapon switching for mm3 improvement cause... honestly i really hate it. It interupts gameplay in my opinion. So i cant help with that part specifically 'fraid. (mostly cause i choose not to)

but yes being able to switch "only" to the right does kinda suck. It's still that way on my game, odyssey. because i dont want any of those dumb "select+up/down" combos.

but when you said you also have korkoxa's weapon switch ontop of mine... uhhh i hope that doesnt cause you any problems cause i've never seen his coding ever before, (never tried out his patch before cause last i saw his was in-complete with glitches through a youtube video i saw once).

I dont like the idea of 2 totally seperate copies of weapon switching on 1 hack. that will cause all sorts of problems and stuff.

Down+Select and Start+Select combos work very well when select is bound to right trigger on a SNES or SFC-style pad, otherwise I don't think they'd be viable. Select+Up is weird, I've never heard of that...down+select works because you can plan your weapon switches around sliding.

I hope someone knows how to do them, because I think I'll have to stick with Korx's patch otherwise. Unfortunately, it can't switch weapons during a slide and yours can. Having both would be perfect.

No problems with the dual patch so far, the version I applied worked fine (it's been updated a few times to fix glitches, so I hope the one I have is stable). I patched it early on so I'd have to redo a lot if I started from a fresh rom file. Patching yours over top of his had no problems, but patching his over top of yours caused the game to crash when pausing with a weapon out, lol.

That sucks about the boss order, but I guess it can be worked around. Thanks for the info.

oh i get it. you put mm3 improvement on only "after" his. It's probably cause he probably attempted to stick his weapon switching code sometime very early on in the main game routines at the start of a frame

while my code starts at the very end of a frame ...so his code is completely over-rided by mine later. Well that's what im "guessing" anyway.

and oh, i see. that makes sense then. It would be useful for playing with real game controllers instead of emulators about the switching stuff. What would be much better is... making that "scroll weapons left" by tieing into into the Select button (or maybe A/B button) on the NES's 2nd controller.

However, for mm3 improvement, i completely deleted all traces of controller 2 input from the controller probing routines, solely because of that debug stuff that existed in mm3.

I doubt hardly many people...or anyone at all would even want to setup controller 2 like that in their emulator settings. so thats why i kinda worry it would not be useful much except to a very small percentage of people maybe ?? I dont know.

anyway if you'd like, i could make an exception and actually do that for you. Assuming your able to setup your SNES pad or settings or whatever, to use the NES controller 2 thing... for your snes pad. if that made any sense.

That would be ideal for emulator play, though people playing on console with a flashcart wouldn't be able to switch in both directions (a lot of speedrunners prefer console due to input lag from LCD/USB). I'm not sure if there's a way around that?

As obnoxious as it is, down+select would work for both groups, and I'd still want start+select to switch back to buster. I've speedrun (speedran?) a lot of MM5 romhacks and having all those quick-switching options available makes an astonishing difference.

I'd definitely take the second controller fix if you really don't want to do down+select, especially if select+select(2) simultaneously (or whatever button was used) would go back to buster as well. The patch's weapon switching is smoother than anything I've seen in other hacks.

I managed to do what I wanted however. But I did not edit the order of the weapons on the Weapon Select bar actually. Only changed the slots used by some RMs. But I dunno, filling up weapons and etc. Yeah, it would not be as easy as it sounds. I spent 2 weeks just to give Shadow's and Spark's Doc Robot slots to Snake and Hard. And why? Because every bits of data is connected to everything. Every non-doc stage select slot is connected to data like which stage to load, which weapon it gives, which tiles the boss uses, which animation the boss uses, which name the boss uses, which weapon text you get on weapon get screen and many others. It was a pain, though I didn't even do any real coding. And why didn't I mention the Doc level slots? Because that was a nightmare to figure out how it works, I had to even swap level data between weapons for that, not only the usual stage select stuff (anim, tiles etc)
But maybe the data connected to the Weapon Select bar is easy to edit, maybe... Maybe it's similar to the page/id stuff that fills up the weapon after defeating a boss.

And... that weapon change thing. If it would be possible to make the debug stuff work again, I'd give the left-right buttons the cycling, down for Plasma buster and up for RC or something. But I dunno, using 2 controllers at the same time (on the real console)? It would be a pain I think.

If they would've invented the L and R triggers for the NES gamepad... :V

Why not just stick to using the select button for weapons toggling ?
Also with the stuff your finding out, you document somethings while you hack away.
When I attempted to hack the palettes I found real fast, half of the palettes are connected to different stages.
One example is top mans level, I wanted him to a have a night time level, with dark red plants,
Odd stuff in capcoms stuff but pretty interesting and funny at times while sifting through the stuff.
