Whichever option has the most votes by March 1st is the one that will get done!

In the meantime, I'm moving on to my next task - converting a MMC5 Megaman 2 ROM to CHR-ROM!

I would say if its not too hard, Contra. Reason for me asking is Trax over at Romhack.net has a really awesome hack going on that redesigns the levels. At the moment each patch has only a few roms done. This would be a great addition to his work that it may help give him the space to combine all of his efforts into a final patch!

Have him come over here and vote!

I want to see more activity on this forum. This is like my ROM hacking haven. I've been coming to Acmlm's since I started ROM hacking back in '99. This forum shouldn't be as dead as it is. I really do believe that this forum can become extremely active again. That's why in one of the other forums I go to, I have the link to this forum in my sig, and I will post the link to this forum in my YouTube videos. Back in the day, when TEK Hacks was around, the forum was dead just like this one is now, but in the recruiting of new members, and talking to ROM hackers on AIM, I wound up helping TEK boom with activity, that it blew my mind how active it became. I don't like to brag, but it was because of me that that happened. For all we know there are people out there that might have an interest in NES or Super NES hacking, but don't know where to go, or they just never heard about this place.

I have read books about the Law of Attraction, and Think and Grow Rich, etc. I do believe that our thoughts have influence over our reality, at least to some degree. Beliefs are also very important. If you believe that this forum can become extremely active again, then it can. And I do believe that it can happen.

You should talk to Snarfblam over on Metroid Contruction about doing this with Metroid! This would be a great addition for Metroid hackers to add more stuff to the existing ROM, especially for Grimlock's current project.

Seriously though, for Contra it would be great for this hack. Check out the video below of Trax's hack

I don't know why, but I thought Metroid already had a MMC5 patch for it. Damn, if I had known it didn't, I would've made it a poll option.

Im just wondering, do these guys that voted for the other games got some serious projects going on?

Metroid - Rogue Dawn & Contra - Revenge of the Red Falcon are 2 awesome ongoing projects at the moment.

Sounds kinda shrewd to say but come on We haven't seen a real good Contra hack come to fruition and also Metroid Rogue Dawn is a phenomenal looking hack!

If you get a chance Retrorain, go over and check out this post. Maybe you can bring some ideas to the table for the Contra hack

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,19022.0.html

Just checked the post this morning and saw Trax post this.

"As for mapper conversions, I fail to see the obvious advantages of using MMC3 or MMC5 that are not an overkill relative to what they can add to the game. As far as I know, MMC3 has more flexible support for partial CHR bank switches, and MMC5 lets you assign palettes to individual 8x8 tiles, instead of the 16x16 limit we can see with the vast majority of NES games. There is probably more to it than what I just said, but still...

As for extra space, Revenge of the Red Falcon is already expanded from 8 to 16 banks, 7 of which are completely unused. Originally, bank 2, up to address 9096, was used for level data. This space is now used for Enemy Data, and everything fits, even though there are a lot more enemies in RotRF. Bank 7 is now Bank F, and bank 7 is used exclusively for Level Data. And there's more than enough space to hold everything. The entire size of the level data for RotRF is 2C7C bytes = 11388 decimal. It's quite a lot of data, but still far from taking an entire ROM bank, thanks to compression. Try to bust the bank limit and you'll quickly realize that you need mighty huge levels to accomplish that. And even if you bust any limit, there's always 7 more banks for you to use...

Of course, I'm not against mapper conversions. If it can bring something interesting to a potential hack, I'm all for it. But it must be worth the trouble...

As some of you guys already know, I have another idea for a different kind of hack of Contra (I briefly discussed this idea in another thread). Right now, I'm trying to convert the game so it can support more than 8 levels, possibly 16, maybe more. If you think using another mapper could make, say, the graphics more awesome, or make the graphics easier to switch on-the-fly, or anything else, then we could give it a try with this hack..."

I sent a PM to one of the admins. I'm going to have the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles option replaced with Metroid, assuming that they're able to change the poll options. It seems to be a better fit.

If you happen to do Contra, can you make it to where the graphics are uncompressed for easy graphics adjustments for people who may want to do project work on it down the road?

If I had the extra time, and of course assuming I'd do a mapper hack of that game, I'd consider it. I never had to deal with graphics compression before, so it would be an interesting new challenge for me. But I barely have enough time to do my own personal projects, because of real-life challenges. I wanted to start my Megaman 2 CHR-ROM conversion on Monday, but I couldn't because of lack of time. And before I do my Megaman 2 Arcade hack, I need to get the CHR-ROM conversion done first. So if someone wants to optimize that game Contra, they're going to have to do it themselves. Besides, it's a lot more satisfying and fun to do things yourself. And you learn in the process. I would encourage someone else to tackle that graphics compression problem.

On the Megaman 2 CHR-ROM note, I did have a few free hours tonight, so I finally started it. I do plan on releasing this MMC5 CHR-ROM version when it's done, before moving on to my Arcade hack. And unlike the Upgrade Patch, there will be no other modifications to the ROM. Just a MMC5 CHR-ROM version of Megaman 2.

To be honest, I don't know. I think so. I actually had on my project list, to convert Zelda no Densetsu to MMC5. But at the moment, it is not my prioritiy. I have other projects to get through first.

In case anyone was interested, I did ask the Admins to change the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles poll option to Metroid, but I don't think they're able to do it. I think once the poll is made, that is it. But I want to thank them for trying anyway.

Well that's good. At least it wasn't for nothing. I see Bionic Commando is getting no love.

It looks like Castlevania is in the lead though. I'm curious to see if that would change by the end. Just so there is no confusion, the voting ends at 12AM on the first, EST. I'm so looking forward to March anyway, because it has been so f*king cold here in the U.S.

Yay, the last day of the voting! This will be the last mapper conversion I do for a while. I see that Castlevania and Zelda are tied. If someone could break the tie by midnight, that would be great! Otherwise, Castlevania might win by default (since it is the first option in the poll and in alphabetical order).

On side news, my Megaman 2 CHR-ROM conversion is now 50% done! All of the backgrounds have been converted, and Monday I will start doing the sprites for the stages, after making the mapper conversion of the winning poll option.

EDIT:

March 1st, 12:00 AM
And the winner is... Castlevania!

Thanks to everyone who voted! Expect the mapper patch for Castlevania soon!

Poll over.

Hey if you happen to do Contra next, can you do it on the Japanese one patched with the translation patch? Would be nice to also include the extra dialogue stuff in between stages.
